President and CEO report

What an exciting year we have experienced at SRS. The six priority areas identified in the Strategic Plan reflect the outcomes of the very successful 42nd year for SRS.

Benetook Farm received a Victorian tram gifted from the State Government of Victoria, Carrazza Complex was completed and built to Liveable Housing Platinum standard - a first for Mildura and the only home adhering to the new NDIS standards.

DHHS became a past memory as we transitioned into the National Disability Insurance Scheme. ProSIMS was introduced as our new rostering and integrated system to assist with the management of quality and compliance information. And after years of trying to become an Aged Care provider, SRS was approved to provide Home Care Packages which rounded off our achievements for the year.

Along with these accolades being celebrated, it was also a year of fast thinking and action with brain overloads of information that required ongoing research to keep abreast of changes in

regulations and legislation. The challenges continued to arrive daily and without notice, but the SRS teams also continued to rise to the challenges and look for the opportunities and embrace the learning along the way.

The necessity to attend conferences and attend meeting in Melbourne ensured SRS had the right information at the right time and made the right connections in the new NDIS world. Working remotely became the norm as we all found that extra day in the week to keep up with the pace and expectations.

During all this, what has not changed at SRS is the commitment to Sunraysia and the people we support, their families and friends. SRS is a great organisation that has never forgotten what and who they are here for and more importantly where they began and why. As we move into the business environment of NDIS we have all learnt to wear many hats at the one time while upholding our SRS values with respect and understanding for our customers, our supporters and the services that support us. On that note and in closing, I would like to take the opportunity to sincerely thank the Board and the excellent staff for their ongoing commitment and contribution to making a difference to the lives of the people we support in our community. We look forward to the next chapter in the history of SRS with enthusiasm as we roll out more innovative strategic projects and outcomes.

Program Activities The 2019 calendar year saw Support Coordination and Aged Care services emerge from being nascent organisational disciplines to join SRS’ Disability Services and Benetook Farm as formalised businesses.

Disability Demand for NDIS-funded support continues to grow in the region unabated, and SRS has continued to grow in turn to meet that demand. In terms of hours of support provided per-year, SRS continued a steady trend of growth throughout 2018-19, effectively having doubled its output across the last five years.

In August of 2019, SRS’ new supported accommodation complex at 882 Fifteenth Street was formally opened and welcomed its first tenants, named the Carrazza Complex. This is in acknowledgement and thanks to Joe Carrazza, for ten

years of continued support for SRS with the Annual Pizza Cafe Fundraising event. Maria and Mario Carrazza and their family members have also volunteered their expertise over the years creating successful fundraising events.

Social Enterprise – Benetook Farm Member for Northern Victoria, Mark Gepp MP, announced in October of 2018 that SRS were successful with their application to give one of Victoria’s retired iconic trams a new home. The tram is one of 89 to be allocated following the Expression of Interest process run by VicTrack, which have been retired from network operations over the past 30 years.

As part of the expression of interest process, more than 1,500 applications were received from across Australia and overseas, with many great ideas on how to bring a tram back to life.

The tram arrived in July this year, now made accessible with a wheelchair ramp and will be used as a complement to the Farm’s planned coffee shop.

The past year saw Benetook Farm Regional Winners of the 2018 Rural Water Awards and coming in at second place for the state. We also saw much of the egg sorting equipment relocated, freeing space for an outdoor garden space and general store, with successful sales to date.

Aged Care, Support Coordination and Active Cleaning Services In November of 2018, SRS became a registered provider of Aged Care supports, and capable of actioning intakes for new business

via the MyAgedCare system. Manager Veronica McLaughlan was appointed in February to facilitate the establishment and growth of this new business for SRS.

In addition, SRS’ Support Coordination and NDIS Plan Management (Financial Intermediary) services became formalised, with Ailise Taylor and Blake Davis in charge of each respectively. These areas are capable of operating independently of SRS’ mainline disability support provision.

As new NDIS participants continue to flow in, it was noted that a significant number of these participants are making use of the NDIS exclusively for domestic assistance in their homes. In response to this, SRS established its Active Cleaning Services program, headed up by Coordinator Annmaree Simmons, tailor-made to cater to this specific category of support.

Fundraising We’re grateful to be an organisation that can rely on the community for support in helping us in our mission to transform the lives of people with disabilities.

SRS Pizza Night 2018 The premier fundraising night of the year, SRS’ annual fundraiser at the Pizza Café at the Grand, held on November 22 2018, continued its tradition for success, crossing the $10,000 mark for gross funds raised for the first time in its history.

On behalf of the participants and families we support, SRS would like to thank all those who attended and assisted to ensure the success of the 2018 SRS Pizza Café Night - all who attended had a great time, with fantastic food and plenty of raffles and auctions to keep the night energised.

10 Annual Report 2019

Our Staff SRS’ staff form the lifeblood of its capacity to provide its services, and the last year has shown exponential growth in our workforce to meet the growing demand for support in the region.

Worker demographics 2018-2019 was the year that the NDIS came into the Mallee region in earnest, with the majority of SRS’ support provisions now funded by the Scheme. The number of intakes across all areas – service provision, service coordination, aged care and others – has increased at mounting speed with each year, and to meet the new business we welcomed many new faces into the fold.

Reflective of the industry at large, SRS’ worker demographic is majority female. In contrast to previous years, SRS’ expansion of workforce has brought in a new generation of eager new workers, with the 21-35 age group now edging out 51-70 as the largest bracket. SRS continues to foster a culture where everyone is welcome, regardless of age, ability, gender or nationality.
