Annual Report 2019
2
On behalf of the Board, I am
very pleased to report that Heath
Alliance for Care had a very
successful year. We welcomed
new residents, completed
improvements and held several
fun-filled special events at
both Heath Village and
Canterbury Village.
Most exciting this year was
the progress made on Heath
Village West. Construction has
moved swiftly along on our
new 92,000 square foot Health
Care Center and Rehabilitation
facility. Once complete, it will
provide our residents as well as
seniors throughout the entire
region access to state-of-the-art,
cutting edge skilled nursing care
and rehabilitation services. Its
progressive, patient centered
floor plan will enable staff
to provide personalized and
compassionate care in a home-
like, neighborhood setting.
The Board and I are looking
forward to its grand opening in
the first half of the year.
There is always something to
celebrate at our communities,
and this year was no exception.
More than 300 people attended
the Alice in Wonderland themed
Family Day. The Board enjoyed
celebrating with residents at the
Resident Anniversary Reception
held in December. We also
had fun getting to know the
residents better at the annual
Summer Social.
On behalf of the Board, I would
like to commend the entire
management team and staff
for their commitment to our
residents. Together, they have
been instrumental in helping
Heath Village and Canterbury
Village become the warm and
wonderful communities they
are today.
Finally, as the newly appointed
Board President, I would like to
thank my fellow Board members
for their time and expertise.
It is very rewarding to serve
with such dedicated individuals
who care so deeply for our
residents and the greater
senior population.
I am looking forward to the
coming year and exploring new
ways to maintain and grow our
excellent reputation.

The year 2019 marked the 53rd year of Heath Village providing housing and care for our residents. I am pleased to report that the year was a great one that included many improvements and additions to our community.
More specifically, this year we renovated or converted more than 10 apartments. We also finalized plans to update and renovate the Heath House lobby. The project will begin in January of 2020. Planning has also begun this year for the reconstruction of two apartments. We hope to have them completed by the summer of 2020.
The Administration spent much of 2019 finalizing and overseeing the building of Heath Village West, which will include a state-of-the-art Health Care Center and Rehabilitation Facility. We are very excited to report that
the new center will open in spring of 2020. Following its completion, we look forward to moving ahead with our plans for the construction of 140 independent living cottage-style apartments.
This year we held our 31st Annual Friendship Fund Benefit Gala at which we raised more than $80,000. All together in 2019, our fundraising efforts produced nearly $223,000 for the Heath Village Friendship Fund.
We commend and thank the Residents’ Council for their continued energy and suggestions on how to improve life and services at the Village. Since our inception, the Council has played a vital role in making our community a unique one. This year the Council created the Bricks of Love fundraiser for the Friendship Fund. This memorial
walkway is located outside Cherry Blossom Court near the community garden.
Finally, we want to thank the Board of Trustees for their partnership and commitment to providing our residents with a retirement community that fosters a meaningful life with security, dignity and fellowship.
I am looking forward to celebrating the grand opening of Heath Village West with our residents and partners in the coming year, and to exploring what other new opportunities the future holds for our community.

Within a few months of the opening of Heath Village in 1966, the Residents’ Council was formed. Over the course of time, in addition to hosting social gatherings, they helped establish the library, Village Shoppe, community garden and several other amenities and events that make Heath Village what it is today.
The Residents’ Council consists of nine members. The 2019 Executive Board includes Barbara Hall, President; Don Buck, Vice President; Bill Reidenbach, Treasurer and coordinator of the Employee Appreciation Fund; and Marion Cosman, Secretary.
The remaining Council members chair one of five subcommittees: Erna Dietz (Friendly Visitors); Jim Kellerk (Dining); Jack O’Grady (Maintenance and Operations); Susan Sumner (Newcomers), and Special Events (currently open). Also serving on the Council is Frank Reitz, who was appointed by the Executive Director to be the resident liaison to the Board of Trustees. Frank serves as a non-voting member of both the Residents’ Council as well as the Heath Village Board of Trustees. He attends each meeting to help convey important decisions and ideas to both boards. Our meetings are also attended by a member of the Board of Trustees, Patrick Brady, Executive Director and Mary Ellen Bove, Chief Operating Officer.
The Council and the subcommittees meet monthly, except for July and August. Subcommittee meetings are open to the residents, and they are encouraged to attend and share their thoughts.
I wish to thank all those who participate, and encourage residents to consider serving on the Council.

On Monday, November 18, 2019, with the passing
of Dr. Sanders Davis, Heath Village lost a good
friend and we, the Heath Alliance for Care Board
of Trustees, a loyal and valuable member. Sandy,
as he liked to be called, was a big man with an
even bigger heart. He joined the Heath Village and
Heath Alliance for Care Boards in 2001. Even with
his busy medical practice, Sandy was committed to
carrying out his Board and Committee duties. His
ever present big smile and common sense will be
greatly missed.
A gifted and caring doctor, Sandy served as
President of the Heath Alliance for Care Board
from 2009-2011.“Dr. Davis was a thoughtful and
loyal Heath Village Board member. He was a friend and mentor to me. I am very grateful for his years
of service, and his dedication to Heath Village and our residents,” said Heath Alliance for Care
CEO Patrick Brady.
Dr. Davis practiced medicine for 50 years. A pain management specialist, he worked at Morristown Memorial Hospital’s Rehabilitation Institute. He graduated from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in 1965.
Sandy, along with his family, was a very active member of the Church of St. Joseph in Mendham, where he was an Ecumenical Minister.
He is survived by his wife Kathy, two daughters and a granddaughter.

Canterbury Village, our assisted living facility located in West Orange, completed another successful year. Under the capable guidance of Art Dunsmore, we are pleased to report that Canterbury is 100% occupied.
In response to a significant increase in the number of inquiries received via our website, Canterbury Village redesigned its site to be more user-friendly and interactive. The site now includes a “Live Chat” function allowing visitors to ask questions in real time. This has proven a very effective marketing tool over the past several months.
Canterbury residents love our activities. We have continued with our favorite trips to the beach, restaurants and local points of interest.
Residents especially enjoy the discussion groups we host and musical entertainers who visit regularly. This year, staff has added evening activities which have also been popular and well attended.
We are sure, though, the favorite activity is our new daily pet therapy program. Art’s Golden Retriever puppy, Piper, burst onto the scene this summer. While still in training, Piper is in the facility with Art each day. She strolls along with him on his walks through the building, encouraging pats on the head and greetings from the residents. Piper, without a doubt, has very quickly become the most popular “staff” member!
During the warmer months, residents continue to enjoy eating breakfast and lunch outdoors in the courtyard. It’s a nice change of pace for residents and staff alike.
We commend the staff for another great year at Canterbury Village, and we look forward to continuing our tradition of providing the highest level of care for our residents.
