PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE: MARSHA LORENZ In a recent study called the “Through Their Eyes Project”, college students were assigned different tasks to complete while simulang the effects of mobility challenges many older adults struggle with. Simulaons included buoning their shirt or tying shoes while wearing gloves, climbing flights of stairs while breathing only through a straw and navigang restrooms, closets and uneven sidewalks with a walker or wheelchair. The students found that what they considered to be daily roune acons were suddenly exhausng and difficult. It also gave them a new outlook on society’s responsibility to be aenve to the needs of everyone in their community. At Seniors First, we see the effects of aging every day. How quickly seemingly simple daily tasks can become impossible when one’s strength or mobility is compromised. It’s why the nutrion and in-home services your contribuons help to provide are so important. It’s also why we are so grateful for your connued support. Thanks to you, in 2018, Seniors First was able to serve over 4,600 clients, provide almost 350,000 meals, 188,000 hours of personal care and homemaker services and 17,700 hours of volunteer service. • president’s message:

    marsha lorenZ

“I am Doc. I am 70 years old, alone with no family. Over the years my health has deteriorated but you have never failed to take extraordinary and loving care of me. Seniors first provides the bulk of my food, shops for me, cleans my home and helps me bathe. In all these years, no one has ever come forward to assist me as Seniors First has done. If I was not permitted to continue with you, I can’t imagine where I would be now. You are in fact, my only family. You are my only treasure.”

As President/CEO, I spend a lot of time looking at numbers....... but as we all know, numbers don’t mean anything if you have no point of reference. So here’s some real numbers. 1 in 6 senior citizens struggle with hunger, thousands have to choose between buying food or medication and hundreds more are in danger of losing their independence for lack of a little help around the house. These are not strangers in other cities we know nothing about. They are living down the street in our own neighborhoods.

But there’s good news. In 2017, thanks to your support, we were able to assist over 4,700 seniors

here in our community including those most in need following the hurricanes. Thanks to you, over 300,000 meals were served alleviating hunger, depression and

isolation. When I read Doc’s story in his own words, I am reminded what a difference you are helping us make in the lives of our seniors. Thank you for caring.

    Here’s how you can help.

Volunteer: Volunteers are the life blood of our Meals on Wheels program. Delivering a hot meal, a vital safety check and a few minutes of much needed conversation can make a world of difference in the life of a senior.

Angel had a serious stroke and Rosita was struggling to take care of him. They were on the verge of being evicted when Seniors First got the call. With your help we were able to provide nutritious food, in-home and personal care. Amazed, Angel says “Everybody came to help us!”

Thanks to you, we’ve been able to improve the quality of life for Angel, Rosita and hundreds more like them, but many more are still in need of assistance. Currently, there are over 16,000 seniors in Orange County who struggle with hunger and may not know where their next meal will come from. Many find themselves isolated and alone, having to choose between food and medication and unable to care for themselves or their environments.

As we look toward the second half of 2017, I am thankful for your continued support. I believe we can solve senior hunger and that it doesn’t take much… if we all join together.

    Here’s how you can help.

Volunteer: Volunteers are the life blood of our Meals on Wheels program. Delivering a hot meal, a vital safety check and a few minutes of much needed conversation can make a world of difference in the life of a senior.
