“This is an era where Depression and Anxiety are geng to be endemic globally. Medical praconers are condioned to provide quick treatment of every manifestaon of physical and emoonal discomfort. Most doctors do not find me to listen to the paents for more than a couple of minutes, somemes not even that. The emerging system of 'managed care' demands quanty or numbers of care. Quality of care is oen not the focus.Medical science is a science based on elaborate insight into the nature of discomfort experienced by a paent, duly collaborated with clinical pathology as revealed on lab tests, exploring the diseased organ through radiology, blood and biological fluid tests, surgical exploraon and in extreme cases, postmortem findings.

Listening to the paent was thus pivotal to health care. The two world wars and several other military conflicts imposed a demand on the medical profession to demonstrate quick symptom control and help the soldiers to get Combat ready as soon as possible. Inadvertently perhaps, the medical profession surrendered the skill of listening in favor of designing strategies for more apparent strategies of quick symptom removal. Before the World War II, Psychiatry had rediscovered the healing power of listening.
