Annual Report 2018 A LONG-TERM VISION The Coast Legacy Circle was formed in 2018. It is a group of donors who have chosen to make conservation of the Oregon Coast their legacy. COAST LEGACY CIRCLE

Recently I accompanied Katie Voelke to a series of public discussions in different communities on the coast. She was soliciting people’s thoughts about what kind of recreational access they would like to see in the proposed Rainforest Reserve—and, for that matter, on other North Coast Land Conservancy properties. Opinions varied widely. What people had in common, however, was gratitude for NCLC’s contributions to quality of life on the Oregon Coast, and gratitude for an organization that listens to people and is eager to do the right thing. Clearly I’m not alone in my admiration for the way NCLC goes about its business of conserving and connecting land. It’s a pleasure to serve an organization that is so widely respected—one that considers itself, above all, a citizen of its community.

CONNECTIVITY

That peak over my shoulder is Onion Peak—the highest point in the range of coastal-fronting mountains at the heart of the proposed Rainforest Reserve. We couldn’t undertake a project this ambitious without enthusiastic support from the community. So we did a lot of listening in 2018. It’s been wonderful to hear how much people in Oregon value open space and a natural environment on their coast. Yet I also heard that the land isn’t a major concern of many people; some folks take for granted that healthy forests, clean drinking water, salmon, and songbirds will always be here. As Joni Mitchell put it, “You don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone.” So while we kept moving forward on the Rainforest Reserve in 2018, we also seized opportunities to conserve a bunch of other places! Working with willing landowners, we expanded habitat reserves in Clatsop and Tillamook

counties, creating butterfly and salmon habitat. We completed a forest management plan for Boneyard Ridge that will contribute to the rewilding of Tillamook Head. We became the owners of nearly 1,000 acres along the Columbia River. And we planted more than 10,000 native seed balls in the coastal prairie. We did this because now is the time to plan for the future.

VOLUNTEERS CRAFT NCLC’S OUTDOOR LIVING ROOM

Have you visited Circle Creek Conservation Center? Maybe you’ve attended the annual Summer Picnic at the Barn or gathered with friends and family for The Forest Remembers in April. Maybe you’ve walked the Legacy Loop or Wetlands Walk trails. Maybe you’ve taken a yoga class or a basketry workshop at the Big Barn.

Whatever brought you there, thank the Trails and Barns Team for making it possible.

Over the past several years, this dedicated group of volunteers has turned the former dairy farm and cattle ranch into a rustic events venue and nature center open to the public. They built and have continually maintained two walking trails and, in collaboration with students from Seaside High School, installed wayfinding posts. They’ve cleared out the barns, repurposing the reusable lumber and filling one dumpster after another with junk. They pressure-washed both barns and arranged for updated wiring and new lighting. In

anticipation of tearing down an old tool shed, they carved out a new tool enclosure and built a woodshop in the stewardship barn. They crafted a lockable enclosure (again, with help from high school students) in the Big Barn to hold tables, chairs, and other event necessities. They built a sign board to welcome visitors. Last spring several volunteers turned their attention to the former Rippet family home—now the Bunkhouse—cleaning and furnishing it for occupation by NCLC’s summer stewardship interns. Most recently, a subgroup has been rescuing old planting beds with an eye to creating a native plant nursery.

Thanks to these volunteers, Circle Creek Conservation Center is now open daily, year-round (conditions permitting); for directions and a trail map, visit NCLCtrust.org/circle-creek-conservation-center. We’re planning a full schedule of events there this summer to mark the 15th anniversary of NCLC’s acquisition of the 364-acre Circle Creek property. C O N S E R V I N G T H E M A G I C

Nearly a century ago, at the height of the Great Depression, members of a generous Portland family donated hundreds of acres of oceanfront land on Tillamook Head to the State of Oregon to create what would become Ecola State Park. Descendants of those visionary philanthropists are now part of North Coast Land Conservancy’s family of donors.

Gainor Arzt and her siblings grew up spending summers at a family home on the north side of Cannon Beach. They are the great-grandchildren of Rodney Glisan, who along with other family members made the first gifts of land to create Ecola State Park. Today they are trustees of the Komal Foundation, which in 2018 made its first gift to NCLC, honoring the family’s coastal conservation legacy. “What I love is that none of us takes it for granted,” Gainor said of the landscape that has formed the backdrop to so many family memories. The state park was created with land donated by Gainor’s mother’s family, but her father also left a legacy of coastal land protection. In 1995, near the end of his life, Frederic Wessinger purchased Chapman

Point—the headland that defines the north end of Cannon Beach—and immediately donated it to the State of Oregon to expand Ecola State Park. “He felt such a connection to what my mother’s family had done with Ecola,” Gainor recalls. “He told us, ‘Now, when people stand at Ecola and look south, they’ll just get that sweeping view. It will never change.’ He was so happy he could do that.

“We’re always so happy when someonecomes down for the first time and they’re sort of wowed by it all,” Gainor adds. “They see elk. They see bald eagles. They say, do you realize how magical this is? And I say, we do. We really do.”
