Teaching, Evangelizing and Worship 32%Ministries charged with this mission administer the largest private school system in Texas and sustain numerous religious education programs serving more than 100,000 people of all ages. They also promote the Catholic faith, reach out to other faiths, advocate for social justice and support liturgical and musical ministries throughout the Archdiocese.

Ministering to the Poor, the Sick and the Incarcerated 14%Answering the call to serve the least among us, these ministries bring pastoral and sacramental aid to the disadvantaged, the disabled, and those who are most in need of God’s healing grace. Whether comforting refugees or battered women, those confined to a prison cell or hospital bed, they show compassion to those in the margins of our society.

Promoting, Preparing and Supporting the Clergy 21%Vocational ministries address the full range of support for the clergy from the beginning stages of discernment to retirement. These ministries offer education and formation of men for the priesthood and permanent diaconate as well as provide direct sacramental and pastoral care, spiritual direction, and fraternal support as they carry out their ministries.

Nurturing and Strengthening Families 25%Family ministries nurture the most basic core unit of Christian life by caring for human and spiritual needs of family members. These range from the spiritual formation of young people at different ages of development to providing dignified care for the elderly. These ministries also address the needs of different ethnic constituencies and respect for the sanctity of life.

Aid to Poor Parishes Fund 4%In 1968 Bishop John L. Morkovsky, tasked then Father Joseph A. Fiorenza, now Archbishop Emeritus, and a committee of priests and laymen to find a way to regularly help support the poorer parishes in our Archdiocese. They created the Aid to Poor Parishes program, which asked all pastors to donate 10% to this effort from their Thanksgiving and Christmas collections and tithing from their offertory. Later, Archbishop Fiorenza gave strong support to the program when he initiated a tax on building parish projects and the DSF rebate program. Parishes that exceed their DSF goal, receive half the surpassed amount and the other half goes to the Aid to Poor Parishes Fund. This fund benefits our parishes and schools in need through financial aid that allows them to continue valuable ministry programs for children and adults, as well as assist with property and building repairs.

Rebates to Parishes 4%

Special Grants less than 1%In addition to the Archdiocesan ministries and agencies indicated above, special grants are awarded to ministries and agencies operating within the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston as determined by Daniel Cardinal DiNardo.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I am pleased to share with you the attached annual report for the Diocesan Services Fund (DSF) appeal of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston for 2018. I thank you once again for your gracious and generous giving.

This report, covering the appeal year through December 31, 2018, recaps the DSF 2018 campaign, which had as its theme, “Instruments of God’s Mercy.” Because of your generosity, DSF funds allow us to assist the 60-plus ministries that include Catholic Charities (where we helped those affected by Hurricane Harvey), the Apostleship of the Sea, Jerome’s Hope and the Office of Vocations, to name a few of our ministries. Together we truly have become “Instruments of God’s Mercy.”

Every gift, no matter the size, helps to make the DSF annual appeal a success. Our goal for 2018 was $14,079,150. By the end of the pledge period, we received pledges totaling $15,122,721, of which $14,873,910 was paid and the total parish rebate was $668,104. I thank the 44,355 generous donors and sincerely appreciate you! Again, it is because of your charitable support that the DSF has been able to meet its goal

each and every year since 2005. During the 52nd year of DSF, you helped to serve thousands of

people spiritually and physically with love and compassion. I thank my brother priests for their steadfast support as we had 110 out of 153 parishes meet their goal. I, together with the leaders and volunteers of the 60-plus ministries that are aided by this fund, am moved by the tremendous response our parishes continue to provide to our Catholic community.

With DSF 2019 well underway, we look forward to sharing more good news with you next year. Please know once again of my gratitude to you and to the Lord Jesus for his providential care manifested in the goodness of his people. With gratitude for your generosity and praying for your continued growth in every good work, I am

Your faithful Shepherd,

Daniel Cardinal DiNardo Archbishop of Galveston-Houston
