CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT

It is a pleasure to again present the annual report for Diving WA for 2017-2018. As in previous years, this year has been a busy and fulfilling time for the Association.

I am thrilled that for the third year running we have achieved an increase in our membership, with growth in all programs. This year our divers have accepted the challenge of improving their skills and dive lists, and many of our divers have competed at a State, National and International level. Who could forget the excitement of watching two West Australian divers compete at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, and congratulations must go to Maddison Keeney and Teju Williamson for their outstanding results. Congratulations must also go to Nikita Hains who represented Australia at the 2018 FINA World Junior Championships in the Ukraine.

Many of our athletes competed at the National Age Championships and the Elite Junior Championships, with a number of divers standing on the podium or achieving personal bests. Well done to the athletes and their coaches for some fantastic results.

Not only have our divers provided us with moments of which to be proud, this year for the first time in a number of years, two of our members were inducted as Life Members at the AGM. Lorraine Keeney was inducted in recognition of her past and continued involvement in organising competitions and events. Her willingness to share her wealth of knowledge of all things related to diving is very much appreciated. Michael Tinley was also inducted in recognition of his past involvement as an elite diver, having competed on the international stage on a number of occasions, along with his ongoing involvement as both a coach and official.

Access to facilities is always a challenging area as our membership grows, and I am delighted that we now have access to an additional venue, St Mary’s Anglican Girls’ school. I would like to thank St Mary’s for the trust they have shown in Diving WA in allowing us to run a program at their venue. I am also delighted that we will be running learn to dive sessions at the Bilgoman Aquatic Centre toward the end of this year, allowing the sport to diversify and provide access to an increasing number of participants.

Not only have we been privileged to have access to a broader range of facilities, but our main facility at HBF Stadium has seen further upgrades this year with improvements to the dryland lighting and the showers near the tower. Further funds have been earmarked for replacement of some of the dive boards and some much needed crash mats and stretching mats. I would like to express my sincere thanks to VenuesWest for their continued commitment to diving, which is very much appreciated by the entire diving community.

This year has not all been centred around the pool. Our wonderful social committee organised a fantastic quiz night, with lots of fun had by all, along with two ‘Divers Nights In’ for our junior members and two successful sausage sizzles. A huge thank you must go to the Social Committee for the amazing effort they put into organising these events, and to everyone who helped on each occasion.

2018 saw the conclusion of our Strategic Plan 2015-2018. I am pleased to report that we achieved many of the goals set out in the strategic plan and saw significant strides towards completion of the remaining goals. Following consultation with our key stakeholders and a member forum, the Strategic Plan for 2018-2022 has been developed. The strategic plan is ambitious, and the Board looks forward to the challenges of delivering on the goals over the coming years.

While the Association remains in a good financial position, this year the Board hoped to achieve the goal of a break-even position. While this goal was not reached, we have been steadily working towards this over the last three years and this year saw us almost reach this milestone. I must acknowledge the significant work done by Kevin Knapp, Steven Rose and Fergus Masters in putting together a sponsorship/funding presentation, which we hope will provide us with some exciting opportunities moving forward.

Page 7: ANNUAL REPORT 2017/2018 · The Association also supported School Sport WA with the 2018 School Sport Australia Diving Championships, the first time it has been held in WA since 2009.

Diving WA Annual Report 2017/18 | 7

The Board has diligently continued to review all matters related to governance, and throughout the year all documents have been reviewed and updated. 2017 also saw a review of our Constitution, with updates in line with best practice. This review provided us with the opportunity to increase the number of Board members from five to seven; four elected and three independent. The Board has also developed Terms of Reference for several committees, and I would like to thank members of these committees for their hard work throughout the year.

The Board has been conscious of the need for an appropriate risk management strategy and this year saw the development of the Governance and Risk committee. The committee has worked hard to develop a risk management matrix, and I would like to thank the committee for their efforts and work throughout the year.

Diving WA is in a strong position and I would like to express my gratitude to the members of the Board of Diving WA for their willingness to contribute positively to the improvement of Diving WA and the strong strategic governance that is provided to the Association from the Board. I would like to thank Kevin Knapp, who resigned from the Board earlier this year due to personal commitments but was instrumental in developing some key practices to assist Board members in fulfilling their duties. I also take this opportunity to thank Michael Wood for accepting a second term as an independent director and Lindsay Toms, Fiona Galvin and Greg Bayne for accepting positions on the Board.

As always, I would like to thank our partners; Diving Australia, VenuesWest, the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, Healthway, WAIS, Turtle Travel, Beyond Bank, Edmund Rice Camps for Kids WA Inc. and Ascend Physiotherapy. The sport of diving would not be possible in Western Australia without their ongoing support.

This report would not be complete without thanking our CEO, Steven Rose. Steven has been instrumental in the development and growth of our sport and I would like to acknowledge his positive ‘can do’ attitude and his continued efforts to improve diving and the opportunities available to Diving WA.

I also could not end this report without thanking our amazing coaches. Their commitment to diving is awe-inspiring and they frequently go above and beyond what is asked of them. Their hard work and diligence in providing fun, stimulating and challenging programs has allowed our divers to improve their skills and shine on the State,

National and International stages. It is with sadness that I take this opportunity to say farewell to Emma Lynch, one of our elite program coaches. Emma has been an enthusiastic supporter of diving and has always given 100% for the improvement of not only the divers under her care but the sport of diving as a whole. She will be leaving us to take up a position in NSWIS and we wish her every success for the future.

My final thanks must go to our key volunteers, Eliza Cole, Lorraine Keeney and Rosie Irvine and to our divers, parents and members. Those of us who have been involved in diving for several years are fully aware of the commitment these volunteers provide, and what is required of both the athlete and their families to compete in this fantastic sport. Diving WA owes you a huge debt of gratitude for the commitment you show. Thank you for the hours you put in, the volunteering you do and the support you give our athletes.

In closing I would like to express my thanks to all Diving WA members in allowing me to lead the Association for another year. It has been both a humbling and rewarding experience to be the Chairperson of this fantastic Association and I look forward to the challenges and opportunities that the following year will bring.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORTDiving WA has seen another fantastic year of growth both in and out of the water.

Key growth measures include:

15% increase in membership; increased participation through school programs; continued and new partnerships; and additional facilities/programs.

The Association was thrilled to see both Maddison Keeney and Teju Williamson representing Australia at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. Both performed exceptionally well, and Maddison achieved a Silver Medal in the Women’s 3m Springboard. We look forward to further success for both girls in the future.

In addition to Maddison and Teju, Western Australia also had Nikita Hains represent Australia during 2017/18 and Kim Hynynen-Furler coaching the Junior Squad in Dresden. Congratulations to all representatives.

2017/18 also saw some of our best achievements at National Championship events. Across three events we had a total of 10 National Champions and 14 medallists, with many divers achieving personal best scores. Again, congratulations to all the people who were involved and competed in these events throughout the year.

The Association also supported School Sport WA with the 2018 School Sport Australia Diving Championships, the first time it has been held in WA since 2009. The event was a great success and we thank all the volunteers, judges, coaches and officials who helped School Sport WA with this event. We received fantastic feedback from all States and participants, and we are looking forward to seeing many of these participants return in April 2019 for the Australian Age Championships.

The Association continues to be in a good financial position and whilst we didn’t reach our budget surplus goal for 2017/18, we are working hard to deliver a budget surplus in future years.

This report will now address each strategic pillar from the 2016-2018 Strategic Plan, the results towards the ‘2018 Goals’, and some key achievements in these areas from the year:

GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT

BOARD GOVERNANCE

At a Special General Meeting in September 2017 the members passed changes to the Constitution. Many of these changes were to align with the Associations Incorporations Act 2015 (WA), but also allowed for some necessary updates to voting and Board composition. Clarification around membership and voting rights were passed, along with the addition of one extra Elected Director and Independent Director, taking the number of Board members to seven.

During the past year the Governance and Risk Committee has also been established to provide the Board with guidance on appropriate corporate governance and risk management practices. The Committee is also regularly reviewing the Risk Management Plan. The Board will be looking to establish the Finance and Audit Committee during 2018/19.

Page 11: ANNUAL REPORT 2017/2018 · The Association also supported School Sport WA with the 2018 School Sport Australia Diving Championships, the first time it has been held in WA since 2009.

WEBSITE, NEWSLETTER AND SOCIAL MEDIA

The Diving WA website continues to be our main information tool and has seen a further 50,000 views from last year. Further information regarding the coaches and programs will be added over the coming year.

“The Rip” newsletter continues to grow with 481 subscribers, almost double from 2015/16.

Diving WA Facebook has also seen further growth with 349 likes/followers, up from 250 last year. We are looking to grow our online presence this year through additional social media platforms like Instagram.

PARTNERSHIPS

While continuing to enhance our previous partnerships and relationships with Diving Australia, VenuesWest, Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, WA Institute of Sport, Ascend Physiotherapy, Beyond Bank, Edmund Rice Camps for Kids WA Inc and Turtle Travel, the Association was able to secure Healthway as a program sponsor, delivering the “Go For 2&5” message. This was an increase from previous grants received from Healthway and has allowed us to further increase our Dive In programs into 2018/19.

The 2017/18 season has seen a further 15% increase in our membership from the previous year to 352. Diving Memberships have remained steady, with the biggest increase seen in Non-Diving members.

Retention of members remains steady and we aim to continue this, along with further recruitment of members in the coming year.

SCHOOLS

The 2017 Unearthing Future Champions Schools Program reached 8 schools and over 800 students. Student numbers were down this year, but the program reached 4 new schools that hadn’t previously been involved in the program. Following these sessions, identified students were invited to a second diving specific session at HBF Stadium. Over 20 students participated, many of whom have continued diving.

SCHOOL SPORT WA DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Davallia Primary School and Shenton College have taken out the Primary and Secondary Champion Schools at the School Sport WA Diving Championships, held on Tuesday 13th March at HBF Stadium, Mount Claremont.

In the competitions second year, 123 students from 18 schools took part, more than triple the number of participants in the first year. The event featured a clinic in the morning for non-experienced divers with the assistance of the Diving WA coaches, followed by the competition.

This also lead into the 2018 School Sport Australia Diving Championships held in Perth in September.

Congratulations to all involved and we look forward to building on this event with School Sport WA in the future. This event was a great success and we thank all the volunteers, judges, coaches and officials who helped School Sport WA.

LEARN TO DIVE PROGRAM

The Learn to Dive program has seen further growth in 2017/18, with 275 participants across the term and holiday programs. This was a bumper season around the Commonwealth Games and the goal is to sustain these numbers in 2018/19. With the addition of Bilgoman Aquatic Centre from Term 4 2018, along with programs at St Mary’s Anglican Girls’ School and HBF Stadium, we believe this is achievable. The program continues to aim to provide greater access and opportunity for children to learn to dive.

PATHWAY

The coaches have worked hard to develop more detail regarding each of our squads/programs and progression between them. This information was presented at a Parent Forum in March 2018 and we are working to have this added to the website for 2018/19.

Numbers in the squads has also increased and we are working to retain these numbers as athletes progress between the squads and pathways.

SHOWER UPGRADES

Following the major facility refurbishments in 2016/17, we were able to secure additional upgrades to the on-deck showers. These works took place in August 2018 and have seen the showers increase from two to five and have instant hot water. Further upgrades to equipment and matting will be coming during 2018/19.

We are again thankful for VenuesWest’s support and commitment to the sport of Diving in WA.

ADDITIONAL FACILITIES

We have not been able to achieve our goal of sustained access to five diving facilities across WA in 2018. We will be starting programs at a third facility, Bilgoman Aquatic Centre in Darlington from Term 4 2018. We are continuing to identify potential existing facilities to run programs from, keeping up to date of potential future facilities that may be able to accommodate diving and maintaining this goal for the 2018-2022 Strategic Plan.

AQUATIC SPORTS STEERING GROUP (ASSG)

Diving WA continues to play an active role with the ASSG, consisting of Diving WA, Swimming WA, Water Polo WA, Synchronised Swimming WA, Masters Swimming WA and Royal Life Saving Society of WA.

The group has been working through the activation plan from Reframing the Future document and will continue to do so through 2018/19.

Along with AUSTSWIM, Department of Education and Triathlon WA, the group developed an activation in the Goldfields region, the Goldfields Splash. The event saw all of the groups attend Kalgoorlie over a two-week program, attending schools, running courses and clinics, and engaging with current clubs, members and stakeholders in the region. The program was a successful pilot with plans for further activations in the future, with the focus on sustainability.

2018-2022 STRATEGIC PLAN

2018 saw the end of the initial Strategic Plan which was developed following the Associations’ Governance and Structural reform in 2015. Following review of the 2016-2018 Strategic Plan by the Board, Members and Stakeholders, the 2018-2022 Diving WA Strategic Plan has been developed and will be reported against in the coming years.

The 2018-2022 Strategic Plan will see Diving WA continue to build on the foundations set in the 2016-2018 plan and continue make diving a sport of choice for Western Australians.

CLOSING REMARKS

There is a lot of work that goes into Diving WA and we would not be able operate without the support of various stakeholders.

Thank you to the Diving Australia Board, staff and David Bell. Your ongoing and continued support of Diving WA and myself is greatly appreciated and we look forward to continuing to grow the sport of diving.

Thank you to our partners Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, VenuesWest, WA Institute of Sport, Healthway, Ascend Physiotherapy, Edmund Rice Camps for Kids WA Inc, Beyond Bank, School Sport WA, Turtle Travel and St Marys’ Anglican Girls’ School. Your ongoing partnership and investment is important not only to the Association, but also in increasing awareness of diving in WA and promoting participation and success in the sport. We look forward to building and growing these partnerships into 2018/19.

To the Board and Chairperson Jo Furness, thank you for your continued support. The Board has continued in a strong, strategic direction and is well balanced with varying skills across all directors. Thank you also to the Sub-Committee members for all their hard work during the year. These Sub-Committees play an important role providing guidance to the Board and your support is much appreciated.

Thank you to the Staff and Coaches of Diving WA for your continued dedication, enthusiasm, professionalism and expertise. 2017/18 has been another big season and we look forward to building on this for 2018/19. Best of luck to both Emma Lynch and Eliza Cole as they continue their lives and careers away from diving from November 2018. You will both be missed by the entire diving community and will always be welcomed back in the future.

Lastly to our members and volunteers. Thank you again for another fantastic year. Your hard work and dedication to the sport, both in and out of the water continues to be an inspiration and does not go unnoticed. I am privileged and honoured to lead the Association and continue to enjoy the position. 2018/19 is looking to be another big year for diving in WA and I look forward to the opportunities and challenges ahead.
