ANNUAL REPORT 2017/18
SAUS CEO REPORT
Surfing Australia is very excited about the progress at Surfing Tasmania over the past year.
Surfing Tasmania has developed a successful state-wide business operation with the ability to
support a part-time self funded Executive Officer in Shayne Clark. Surfing Australia has enjoyed
working with Shayne and the Surfing Tasmania President to support their business development.
We are excited to see that Surfing Tasmania is on track to achieve its 2018 budget with an expected
turnover of $95,000. The area of sport development is strong, with six active boardriders clubs and
five affiliated surf schools. The area of participation will be further enhanced with the
implementation of a $10,000 annual grant secured from the State Government State Grants
Program.
We are very excited about the prospects for growth for Surfing Tasmania and very much look
forward to working with the Surfing Tasmania Board and their Executive Officer Shayne Clark to
ensure ongoing success.

STAS PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Surfing Tasmania’s future looks sensational after another great year of events across the growing
junior series, diverse open events and the SUP events. Another highlight has been the social scene
organised at the junior events, a great way to grow the friendships and family of Surfing Tasmania.
Particular thanks to the Tasmanian Government for their $10,000 assistance through the State
Grants Program for a range of coaching and participation programs statewide. Also we thank the
Tasmanian Community Fund for a grant of $8500 which enabled STAS to purchase a portable
generator, pa system and multipurpose gear/SUP trailer.
New national sponsors came on board this year in Woolworths sponsoring the junior series and Air
Asia multiple events, ‘air of the day’/’wave of the day’ and expression sessions across the state. ‘We
are Feel Good inc’ sunscreen are also now an official partner with Surfing Tasmania, providing
discounted sunscreen product sponsorship and supporter membership.
A massive thank you to the continued support and collaborative partnership we experience with
Surfing Australia including access to national coaching programs at the HPC for our best juniors.
A special thanks to Surfing Australia CEO Andrew Stark as well to our sponsors and supporter
membership base assisting in securing the financial viability of Surfing Tasmania, your support is
sincerely appreciated. Surfing Tasmania ran 13 successful events around the island from October to
June including the national Nudie Australian Boardrider Battle State Qualifying event, the
Woolworths/Wahu national junior event, new Woolworths State Junior Series - 4 events and Air Asia
Awards. The Southern Challenge format again proved extremely popular and a guide to our future
diversity.
We are currently planning a season opening state event that will focus on women and girls to be
held at Clifton Beach, with Layne Beachley attending this event. This is just one of the outcomes we
have initiated following a gender equality submission, along with cash prize equality at events.
Thanks to Board member and State Head Judge Michael Schmidt who resigned from the Board this year. Michael’s contribution and knowledge on competitive surfing has been extremely valuable. Michael will continue in the role of Head Judge at most events. All the best to our junior team competing at the Fleurieu Peninsula, South Australia in December. Enjoy the opportunity and bring on your competitive best surfing at the event. We hope you all have a successful event and the waves are pumping. It is awesome to see the planned Red Bull event at Shippies coming to fruition. There is no doubt the Tassie boys surfing in the event will be the real contenders, congratulations to all the boys in the event, we will all be keenly watching! Our first event for 2018/19 was the North West Board Riders teams event on the North West Coast, hope to see another great turn out at this different format. We look forward to the coming year with all our members with exciting events and programs to share with our surfing community. Marty Viney President Surfing Tasmania.

The trip to Culburra went well with all team members setting personal goals to achieve
throughout the week. Most of the team improved heat scores from their first heats to their
subsequent scores with some team members getting into the good range. Kelly Nordstrom
stepped in to the coaching role well taking on leadership from the time the group left the
airport being co pilot in the board truck. The school surfing team got some pleasing results
in their match up and were unfortunate not to make it into at least one final. The team
worked well together throughout the week both at the contest site and also during their
down time at the houses. The accommodation was successful with the two houses within
walking distance from each other. The team is going through another restructuring stage
with a number of people attending their first nationals. Hopefully over the next few years
they will build from this experience and improve as surfers.

TASMANIAN COMMUNITY FUND GRANT
TASMANIAN COMMUNITY FUND GRANT. The 2018 Surfing Tasmania season has now finished with
the Tasmanian SUP Titles at Eaglehawk Neck June 23/24. Late last year Surfing Tasmania was the
recipient of an $8289 Grant from the Tasmanian Community Fund Round 35 S. That Grant enabled
STAS to upgrade old event equipment (PA System and new Generator) as well as a new trailer for
use by our SUP competitors and as a second equipment trailer for STAS. The Honda Generator and
PA System have been in use through the latter half of our 2018 event series statewide from Bruny
Island, Scamander to Marrawah. The new trailer will come into wide use from October as our new
season cranks into gear. Surfing Tasmania would like to acknowledge the Tasmanian Community
Fund and their great support in providing funding for the essential equipment without which we
could not be able to run our statewide program effectively or safely.
