You are the wonderful, dedicated, kind and devoted support system we are endlessly grateful for. By once again supporting SCOPE, you will help make camp accessible for hundreds of children!

“When I found out that I was picked to come to camp, I cried because I was so excited. I am going to meet new friends, swim and ride horses. Camp is my favorite thing I get to do all summer. Thank you! One day when I grow up I will pay for someone else to go to camp.” – Tia, 9 years old, Foster Child

You made camp possible for Tia. The support you give to SCOPE delivers the gift of a lifetime to children who truly benefit from camp. Children who will one day want to pay that forward for another child, just as you have.

It’s incredible. Yet so simple. With your help, we will continue to provide overnight summer camp experiences and access to educational opportunities for children from low-income families.

Please continue to make a difference by giving today! We hope you will continue the journey with us, as we embark on another inspiring year of giving the gift of camp.

Thank you!

With our gratitude and appreciation,

Justin Mayer, SCOPE Board President

2017 SCOPE ANNUAL REPORT2

To the greatest donors and supporters we know,

There are so many children who need camp. Children who benefit from the social experience, from the healthy risk-taking, from the exploration of independence in a safe environment, and just from the fun of it all. These same children who need camp also need your continued support to make it possible.

2017 SCOPE ANNUAL REPORT3

SUMMER Summer camp is a partner in the education of children. SCOPE bridges the opportunity gap by making summer camp accessible to as many children from financially disadvantaged families as possible. Children enrolled in public school/public charter school, ages 7-16 and qualify for the USDA Free or Reduced Lunch Program are eligible to apply for SCOPE campership support.

SCOPE partners with nonprofit, residential summer camps around the United States, accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA). SCOPE partner camps recruit campers through community partner relationships and provide SCOPE campership applications to families that meet the requirements for SCOPE funding.

Page 10: Annual Report 2017...3 2017 SCOPE ANNUAL REPORT SUMMER Summer camp is a partner in the education of children. SCOPE bridges the opportunity gap by making summer camp accessible to

Since 1992, SCOPE has provided more than 25,000 deserving children with the benefits of summer camp - positive identity and confidence; better social, physical and cognitive skills; and increased independence and leadership. Based on the belief that summer camp is a partner in the education of children, SCOPE is dedicated to affording outstanding camp opportunities to children from low income families, as we have for over 27 years. To strengthen the importance of the formal education of the children we serve, we ask SCOPE campers to stay in school and encourage them to do well and complete their education.

Our long term commitment to SCOPE campers is further enhanced through the Sanford Lavitt Education Fund, which will provide college or vocational school scholarships to children who remain in the SCOPE program and graduate from high school. It is through our focus on the year-round education of the total child that we can truly fulfill our mission: to help children from underserved communities succeed in life through the summer camp experience.

Contribute to the Lavitt Fund >

• The Lavitt Education Fund will provide college or approved vocational schoolscholarships for SCOPE campers

• Campers entering third, fourth or fifth grade each summer are eligible, beginning in 2013

• Children must stay in school, return to camp each summer, and graduate high school

• “Gap year” campership will be available for campers to return in leadership capacity as they age out of camper program

The SCOPE Associate Board is made up of young professionals, ages 21+ who leverage their expertise, networks and resources to help advocate for SCOPE.

Their mission is to increase awareness of SCOPE by working to engage young professionals, peer to peer, who share a love of summer camp and understand the important role summer camp plays in the development of children.

The Board hopes to build a large membership base and create fun, engaging, and impactful events that will help raise funds for camp scholarships.

The SCOPE-JLC is comprised of high school and middle school students who love summer camp and are motivated to give other children the chance to have similar camp experiences. With support from their families and friends, these young philanthropists create projects that help raise funds for SCOPE.

THE POWER OF SUMMER CAMP: XAVIER’S STORY

Camp has also given me positive male role models at a time I needed it the most. The counselors at Trail Blazers have been good role models. My counselor has inspired me the most… he has taught me to be confident and to never give up on myself. I look forward to seeing him every year.

2017 SCOPE ANNUAL REPORT18

“ Camp has influenced my life in many ways. Before I came to camp my grandfather promised to take me fishing but he passed away before we were able to go. Thanks to camp I learned how to fish, canoe, hike, and swim. These are all of the things my grandfather wanted to teach me before he passed away.

The biggest reason camp has played such a big part of my life is because of my mother. Growing up my mother always talked about camp as being the best part of her childhood. My mother always told me about how her opportunity to go to camp changed her life for the better.

When I was old enough, I learned about SCOPE support. My mother looked forward to camp every year like I do. It makes me happy to be able to share this experience with my mother.”

“Children from underserved communities have the opportunity to experience the gift of camp through SCOPE’s mission. I know through my 10 years, camp has made a positive impact on my life. Helping others who might not have the same opportunity to experience this joy and magic is why I started a SCOPE club at my high school.” – Ellie Krantz, SCOPE Junior Leadership Council

“Everyone deserves the gift of camp: the confidence I’ve gained, the friends I’ve made, and the amazing memories that have been created at camp are immeasurable. Through SCOPE, I want to be able to share this gift I was lucky enough to receive as a child with as many children as possible.” – Robbie Gothelf, SCOPE Associate Board
