It gives me immense pleasure and honour to be Medical Superintendent of this esteemed

institution. I feel privileged to present annual report of Swami Dayanand Hospital and its satellite

unit Veer Savarkar Hospital.

Swami Dayanand Hospital is 370 bedded Secondary Care Hospital which caters to a large

population of East Delhi and its neighbouring areas of U.P. The guiding philosophy remains to

provide best possible professional service to needy patients and to strengthen knowledge base in

the relevant field through research.

My endeavour is to provide all basic amenities to patients along with quality healthcare

through development of quality infrastructure at no price to patients and to alleviate human

sufferings through healing hands.

Over the years, this hospital has grown by leaps and bounds. The services provided by

doctors and Paramedical staff towards the sick and needy are highly commendable.

We have adopted a new queue management system in Pharmacy whereby patients are

given tokens and they no longer have to stand in long lines for hours to collect medicines. Effluent

treatment plant has been made operational to treat harmful hospital waste and reuse its water

for horticulture and at the same time makes the environment safe.

We have accomplished the admission process of all three nursing schools of MCD

successfully. Students of our RajmataVijay Raje Scindia Nursing School performed the best in the

nursing examination of Delhi.

We are regularly conducting training for Doctors and Paramedical staff in many fields.

Some of our Doctors have presented papers in National Conference and have been awarded also.

Our library has internet facility and air conditioned environment and good ambience of library is

conducive to learning.

A lot of effort has been put by the staff in collecting all data and presenting it in an

attractive manner.

I take this opportunity to thank all my colleagues, staff and well-wishers. I hope that with

the guiding force of competent officers in the administration, suggestions from public

representatives and full-hearted support from the hospital staff, this hospital will reach new

heights.

My best wishes to all for the New Year.

From the desk of Additional Medical Superintendent

Since 30 years of my work experience in Swami Dayanand Hospital and 6 months as Additional

Medical Superintendent, with an immense pleasure it’s apt to state that the staffs of this hospital

have delivered their duties exceptionally in serving the patients and the society with highest

standards of health care; which remains and will remain as the primary focus of Swami

Dayanand Hospital.

With the team of experienced doctors, nurses, paramedical staff, technical team, DNB teachers

and Nursing school tutors along with the students under their guidance, we aim to provide the

best health care, be it in diagnostics, clinical protocols, nursing care or infrastructure to ensure

the quality health care we can give to anyone who seeks our assistance.

With rapid advancement in health care, it’s a challenge to keep with the pace. However, we will

strive for excellence with all the resources we have and we can get to assure best services to our

patients. It’s a new venture; we are all looking forward to.

I wish our dedicated staff the best for this upcoming challenge.

STAFF LAYOUT: The department of Orthopedics is one of the busiest in the hospital. At present

there are four senior medical officers in the department. Amongst them, three have post

graduate degree in Orthopedics. There is one specialist on contract basis, six senior residents and

one junior resident in the department. At present there are four plaster assistants against five

sanctioned post and one orthopedics technician. One serior resident is sent to VSAS,Karawal

Nagar to manage the orthopedic OPD there.

INFRASTRUCTURE: We had a well equipped operation theater complex where almost all

varieties of orthopedic surgeries were conducted. The department possesses an operating

arthroscopic set complete with monitor, shaving system, etc. a pneumatically powered drill and

ORTHOPEDICS

Page 38: ANNUAL REPORT 2016 - sdnhospital.edu.insdnhospital.edu.in/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/ANNUAL REPORT 2018.pdf · ANNUAL REPORT 2018 SWAMI DAYANAND HOSPITAL Page 3 SR.NO DEPARTMENT NAME

saw system, two image intensifiers and other orthopedic instruments. With this infrastructure,

all kinds of modern orthopedic surgeries were being conducted here.

But unfortunately the roof of OT caved in rendering the OT complex unusable. The Ortho OT had

to be shifted to a make shift arrangement in Gynae OT which has been a great set back to the

wonderful work that the department was doing.

In spite of this in the past one year, the orthopedic department has rendered invaluable services

to the multitude of attending patients. In addition to the routine and common orthopedic

operations we have done all kinds of surgeries including arthroscopic surgeries for knee and

shoulder, total joint replacement of hips, knees, shoulder and spinal surgeries for prolapsed

intervertebral disc, fixation and fusion of the spine and other surgeries as well. Reconstructive

surgeries for bone tumors are also being conducted here. Cervical Spine Decompression and

fixation has also been conducted.

WORK STATISTICS: In the year 2018, we have performed more than 402 major and 805 minor

surgeries which include cases done in the minor OT and OPD and closed reduction of fracture in

the orthopedic OPD. In addition to this we have administered about 943 intra-articular

Hydrocortisone injections, applied more than 12346 plasters and removed about 12220 plasters

in 2018. In addition to the routine cases all emergency cases are handled too. Round the clock

emergency services are being provided. About 4208 plasters have been applied in the casualty

department in the past year. Many emergency cases which had been to referred to other

hospitals earlier due to lack of emergency facilities are being handled now. Many emergency

procedures which include closed reduction, open reduction and internal fixation of fractures,

drainage of bone and joint abscesses, etc. have been done in the past year. The orthopedic OPD

is one of the heaviest amongst all with approximately 300-350 patients being catered to daily.

Even on Wednesdays, on which surgeries are performed, OPD is being run. Minor cases are

performed on OPD basis in the minor OT in the OPD. Also many closed reduction under

anesthesia are performed in OPD itself. Regular CTEV clinic run on every Friday in the OPD,

whereby about 1320 CTEV plasters have been applied. Free camps for bone mineral density

assessment of patients are also done at times.

ACADEMIC: On the academic front, the department is in the process of initiation of Post

Graduate Teaching programme to train aspiring orthopedic surgeons and the application for the

same has been duly submitted. Regular update of knowledge for the faculty and residents

through CME's and conferences are also encouraged. Our library also has a rich collection

orthopedic books and journals to keep us academically updated.

ANCILLARY DEPARTMENTS: Physiotherapy, which is an integral part of this department, has also been

doing a commendable job. Excellent services are being provided to the needy and they are being

rehabilitated to resume their occupation at earliest. Physiotherapy services are being provided to indoor

and outdoor patients from all departments including orthopedics, medicine, pediatrics, gynecology and

obstetrics and ICU as well. In the year 2018 the physiotherapy has catered to more than 36369 patients in

Thalassemia Project report for Jan-18 to Dec-18

Thalassemia screening was introduced 4-5 year back when it was being done mainly by nestroft

reagent but since it was not cost effective and its shelf life was also less, gradually it is being replaced by

CBC method. Hence auto analyzers were purchased and lab technicians were trained in this method.

Following are the centers under EDMC where the screening was being done by nestroft method, hence

now they are diverting their patients to nearby major hospitals and centers where autoanalyzer is

available and the screening done by CBC method.

Information Systems (HIS) are “designed to improve the quality and management of

clinical care and hospital health care management in the areas of HIS System installed in S.D.N.

Hospital by WIPRO info Tech Ltd in the year 2005-06. Director I.T. has been very supportive

and helping as coordinator to the inputs, processor and monitoring of output.

Hospital clinical process analysis and activity-based costing.” Improved patient care, cost

control and security are possible benefits of implementing such systems. However, the

implementation of hospital management information systems must be accompanied by significant

planning on the part of management to maximize results.

There are many benefits of hospital management information systems. Properly

implemented HIS can improve quality of patient care by increasing the timeliness and accuracy of

records and administrative information. HIS provides simplified access to patient records and

other administrative information for those who need it. It also sets a standard for patient care,

making it more consistent across the board. In many cases, patients can also use the system to

better educate themselves about their diseases and conditions as well as treatments and outcomes.
