The grand idea that led to the creation of Hope House Foundation more than 50 years ago was actually spurred by a great need. It was parents of children with developmental and intellectual disabilities who realized that once their children were no longer children—that when they came of age as adults—the assistance they had relied on would be gone. In effect, those most in need of our compassion and support were “aging out” of help, and into a world of uncertainty.

Today, Hope House is a widely respected supporter of adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. It is our commitment that no one will ever have to fear aging out of our system or the assistance we provide.

In fact, we now support individuals from every age category typically referred to, from the GI Generation (1901-1926) up through Generation Y, aka Millennials (1977-1995). It’s a testament to our 50-plus years of providing services, as well as a confirmation of how we provide services, that compel those we support to stay with us.

In the following pages you will meet one person we support from each Generation. While their ages and life experiences may differ, their enthusiasm and spirit are consistent and uplifting for those of us who interact with them every day.

We’re proud that so many of those we support have chosen to stay with Hope House for all these years, even decades. In fact, you could say that our service now includes that expansive cohort we might call Generation All.

No one has been supported by Hope House longer than Lucinda.

She was born in North Carolina in 1924, living with her parents

and siblings until being placed in a training school at age 16. She

was institutionalized from 1962 until she began receiving services

at Hope House Foundation in 1973. And that’s when her life of

independence began, including working and excelling at a number

of jobs. Today, Lucinda has her own apartment where her shelves are

filled with her artwork and framed pictures of family and friends. She

is an avid gardener, loves hanging out with her best friend Charlotte,

and attends church regularly.

Born in 1941, Jeanie hails from the Silent Generation. Although as

an avid conversationalist and dinner-party hostess, she is anything

but silent. Jeanie loves having visitors to her apartment, cooking,

picking crabs and dressing with style. She enjoys sitting outdoors

in nice weather, and going on a Spirit of Norfolk cruise or attending

movies and the theater. Staff adore Jeanie for her loving affection

and wonderful sense of humor. She recently reconnected with a son

she hadn’t seen in years, and now sees him weekly. Jeanie has eight

children, six of who are still alive.

Lewis was born in 1957, making him a full-fledged Boomer. While

his early years had rock-and-roll, the Kennedy assassination and

Viet Nam as a generation-defining backdrop, Lewis grew up shy and

mostly kept to himself. But once at Hope House, staff have worked

to bring him out of his shell. One way has been by helping him

participate in civic meetings which create a space for individuals to

find their voice and practice self-advocacy—such a Sixties notion!

As his personality has blossomed, Lewis has shown a passion for

shopping, recycling, even collecting hats. Some things that haven’t

changed are a couple traits Lewis was born with —he is a truly kind

and genuine individual.

Kevin was born during the late 60s, but his personality is nothing

like those turbulent times. Instead, as a classic Gen-Xer, Kevin is

extremely personable and outgoing, and is not afraid to show off

his dance moves or share his steadfast ideals. He stays active in the

community, he loves the Redskins—even attending a few games a

year — and he loves to help educate new Hope House employees by

advocating for our mission and philosophy! In fact, he actually works

for us, co-facilitating portions of our agency orientation.

Born in 1985, Kim is a proud representative of the Millennial

Generation at Hope House. So it’s no surprise that she’s outgoing

in the community and active on social media. Kim is quite tall, and

when you combine that with her unique and individual sense of style

—picture experimental haircuts, hair colors, polished nails and other

accessories—she makes an impression wherever she goes. Kim likes

to hang out with her many friends, whether it’s at the mall, a local

restaurant or just lounging around in her apartment. She also makes

and sells crafts. Oh, and she’s engaged, too, living with the man of

her dreams! Kim really feels that she is living the life she wants.

What a difference a generation makes. In this annual report you’ve met Lucinda who was born in 1924 and placed in one of Virginia’s largest institutions. I recall how thrilled she was to move out of the institution and into a group home right here in Hampton Roads. This was the mid-70’s and she was in her fourth decade of life.

The segregation and isolation of institutionalization for countless people with disabilities was the norm in Lucinda’s generation. This changed with the growing awareness and advocacy to support people with intellectual disabilities in neighborhoods and communities. This

movement started during the Kennedy administration and blossomed during the generation he represented. It was a time of the Peace Corps, “love, not war,” flower power and civil unrest.

Lucinda was happy in 1974 to have the freedom to just walk outside and quite literally smell the roses. She is delighted with her life, having her own home and the wisdom that comes naturally in her ninth decade. Much has changed but the constant has been our agency and its commitment to people with disabilities. Lucinda has witnessed our evolution up close, being one of the earliest people to move out of the first group home we closed, in 1984.

Now fast forward. In these pages you have met Kim, born in 1985 with a very different experience to Lucinda’s. She and her long-term boyfriend live together. She regularly displays her art and crafts at the Stockley Gardens Arts Festival. She knows what kind of life she wants and will advocate strongly for the support needed to achieve it. She is involved and part of her community, and is very keen on participating with social media in a variety of ways. She is a Millennial in every sense of the word; she wants a life, not a service.

At Hope House Foundation our core belief is that people with disabilities want and deserve their own home or apartment, which is why we closed down all of our group homes by the early 90’s. Now we support over 120 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in their home. We remain the only organization in Virginia to do so regardless of the level of disability or extent of support needed. We know that people thrive and contribute when included, whether it’s in the workplace, civic groups or neighborhoods. We also hope that someday soon this opportunity will be the norm for people throughout the country.

At Hope House our commitment is long-term, our passion unbridled and our belief in humanity undeterred. We continue to grow and learn together, whether that is in supporting someone through the end of life or celebrating direct-support professionals for service with our agency. It’s a journey that has brought much joy and our fair share of challenges, but certainly it has been one worth taking and continuing.

Generations of Hope is not just a phrase. It is truly what we do, all of us, one tree at a time.
