Department of orthopedics is one of the busiest in the hospital. At present there are three senior medical officers in the department. Amongst them, two have post graduate degree in Orthopedics. There is one specialist on contract basis, six senior residents and one junior resident in the department. At present there are five sanctioned posts of plaster assistant and one post of orthopedic technician. But there is only one OrthopZedic technician working against these posts.

We have a well equipped operation theater complex where almost all varieties of orthopedic surgeries are conducted. The department possesses an operating arthroscopic set complete with monitor, shaving system, etc. with pneumatically powered drill and saw system, an image intensifier and other orthopedic instruments.

With this infrastructure, all kinds of modern orthopedic surgeries are being conducted here. In the past one year, the orthopedic department has rendered invaluable services to the multitude of attending patients. In addition to the routine and common orthopedic operations we have done all kinds of surgeries including arthroscopic surgeries for knee and shoulder, total joint replacement of hips and knees, spinal surgeries for prolapsed intervertebral disc, fixation and fusion of the spine and other surgeries as well. Reconstructive surgeries for bone tumors are also being conducted here.

In the year 2015 we have performed more than 298 major and 578 minor surgeries which include cases done in the minor OT and OPD and closed reduction of fracture in the orthopedic OPD. In addition to this we have administered about 700 intra-articular Hydrocortisone injections, applied more than 10000 plasters and remove about 9500 plasters in 2015.

In addition to the routine cases all emergency cases are handled too. Round the clock emergency services are being provided. About 3500 plaster have been applied in the casualty department in the past year. Many emergency cases which had to be referred to other hospitals earlier due to lack of emergency facilities are being handled now. Many emergency procedures which include closed reduction, open reduction and internal fixation of fractures, drainage of bone and joint abscesses, etc. have been done in the past year.

The orthopedic OPD is one of the heaviest amongst all with approximately 300 patients being catered to daily. Even on Wednesdays, on which operations are performed, OPD is being run. Minor cases are performed on OPD basis in the minor OT in the OPD. Also many closed reduction under anesthesia are performed in OPD itself. Regular CTEV clinic run on every Friday in the OPD, whereby about 500 CTEV plaster have been applied.

Physiotherapy, which is an integral part of this department, has being doing a commendable job. Excellent services are being provided to the needy and they are being rehabilitated to resume their occupation at earliest. Physiotherapy services are being provided to indoor and outdoor patients from all departments including orthopedics, medicine, pediatrics, gynecology and obstetrics and ICU as well. In the year 2015 the physiotherapy has been catered to more than 38000 patients in indoor and outdoor basis.

At present there are two regular physiotherapists and one on contract basis only. One Physiotherapist on contract basis visits here twice a week and with the increase number of

ORTHOPEDICS

patients it is become difficult to manage the physiotherapy department. Increase of physiotherapist posts is of utmost importance at present.

Thalaseemia Project report for Jan-15 to Dec-15

Thalaseemia screening was introduced 4-5 year back when it was being done mainly by nestroft reagent but since it was not cost effective and its shelf life was also less, gradually it is being replaced by CBC method. Hence auto analyzers were purchased and lab technicians were trained in this method. Following are the centers under EDMC where the screening was being done by nestroft method, because of the unavailability of the reagent these centers are diverting their patients to nearby major hospitals and centers where autoanalyzer is available and the screening done by CBC method.

Information Systems (HIS) are “designed to improve the quality and

management of clinical care and hospital health care management in the areas of HIS System installed in S.D.N. Hospital by WIPRO info Tech Ltd in the year 2005-06. Director I.T. has been very supportive and helping as coordinator to the inputs, processor and monitoring of output.

Hospital clinical process analysis and activity-based costing.” Improved patient care, cost control and security are possible benefits of implementing such systems. However, the implementation of hospital management information systems must be accompanied by significant planning on the part of management to maximize results.

There are many benefits of hospital management information systems. Properly implemented HIS can improve quality of patient care by increasing the timeliness and accuracy of records and administrative information. HIS provides simplified access to patient records and other administrative information for those who need it. It also sets a standard for patient care, making it more consistent across the board. In many cases, patients can also use the system to better educate themselves about their diseases and conditions as well as treatments and outcomes.
