Annual Report 2015-16
The past school year calls for celebration for countless reasons.
Across all grades, students’ academic growth outpaced national norms. The eighth grade class graduated with the academic equivalency of 10th graders, and seeing them model servant leadership in summer camp was a joy! The first students to ever attend Brookstone are nearing the end of their college careers. As they come back to visit, we are celebrating their stories of success and hopes for the future.
We are a family, and we will continue to hope for abundant lives for these children, to celebrate transformations, and faithfully pursue excellence in education, service, and our love for one another.
We give God all the glory for the ways our mission is advancing. And we thank YOU, donors, volunteers, and friends of Brookstone, for the way you fulfill a vital mission of mercy
in our community. Your financial support and compassion uplifts children and helps them realize their highest potential – academically, socially, and spiritually.
As we build, let us continue to give thanks because the Lord our God is our helper, and with Him we will not fail.

Joyful are those who have the God of Israel as their helper, whose hope is the Lord their God. - Psalm 146:5
Aiming High for Achievement
Last year our promise to students, parents, and donors was “Growth with Excellence,” which leveraged the best resources to increase student productivity, strengthen academic outcomes, and produce life change for under-resourced students. That promise was fulfilled as we see growth through measurement.
2016 IOWA Outcomes – Data shows Brookstone students performing at the 80th percentile when compared against students of similar economic status across the U.S. This is powerful evidence that our educational mission is on track!

Tracking Academic Outcomes – A comparison of standardized test results over the past four years shows the extent to which we are effectively closing the achievement gap for Brookstone students. The graph shows that our students rank at the 61st percentile when compared against all students across the U.S.

Investing in Lives
“I volunteer because I see the potential long range impact this type of education can have as students become future leaders in our city and elsewhere in the world. It is an investment that can be paid forward for many generations.” Linda Myers Volunteer
“Being a part of some-thing with tangible benefits for Charlotte’s youth is a privilege. It’s easy to see God’s hand at work here in downtown Charlotte, and looking at what He has already done at Brookstone, I can only imagine His future plans for the school!” David ChapmanBrookstone Advisory Committee and Alumni Society
“We feel that every kid should have the choice of a religious educa-tion, regardless of the cost. That is why we decided to become Partners. Since volun-teering this year, my life has been enriched as I spend time with my lunch buddy and see how eager these students are to learn in the classroom.” Cathy BohatyPartner and volunteer
“For the past five years we have been blessed to be part of the Brookstone family. We watched our lunch buddies grow in confi-dence, social skills, and Christian values well beyond their years. Investing in the educa-tion of young people is not only rewarding but lays the foundation for our collective future.” Brad SmithPartner and Lunch buddy
Attending Brookstone during the first half of my educational career is something I’m truly grateful for. Brookstone set a firm foundation for me both academically and spiritually. I always knew the teachers cared about me and wanted me to excel in my studies and understanding of God’s love.
When I transitioned into public school, I continued to stay in touch with my Brookstone family because I really do consider them family!
Even now as a college student pursuing a career in psychology, I still stop by Brookstone when I’m home and volunteer with a math class or read with a younger student. Brookstone has taught me how to be a leader by serving those around me, and I feel privileged to be a Brookstone alumnus!
Jon Baldwin, Wingate University
Brookstone made a lasting impact on my life, something that I recognize more every day. I received a quality education with a strong Christian foundation that most kids do not receive in a public school. The teachers at Brookstone loved us and
challenged us to think outside the box. They believed that we could do anything we set our minds to; they helped us believe in ourselves!
As I study communications and marketing at UNCC and make future career plans, I’m most grateful for the support and family I have at Brookstone Schools. I know I would not be where I am today, with hopes to become a news anchor or public relations specialist, if not for the foundation set for me through Brookstone.

Friends,
Thank you for providing a refuge of hope and edu-cational opportunity for under-resourced children in Charlotte. This annual report is a celebration of God’s provision and what you have been a part of this year.
It takes work and true intentionality to make a difference in others’ lives. But, when like-minded people band together around a bold mission, it can happen! We have seen healthy growth in all ways this year… from the expan-sion of our Partner program to the growing team of committed volunteers who joyfully serve in the school. We are energized by this wave of momentum and see bright days ahead for Brookstone.
