Dear Friends:

On behalf of our Board of Directors, more than 100 employees, and 2,500- plus volunteers, I’m very pleased to share with you our 2014 Annual Report.

While our nation’s longest war came to a close in December, the world remains a very dangerous place. Combat operations have been replaced by counterterrorism operations. Here at home, the lasting effects of more than 13 years of conflict are being borne by a generation of warriors trying to assimilate into society – all amidst debate on the cost and quality of the benefits for our service members, military families, and veterans.

Through this uncertainty, Operation Homefront continues to provide relief – more than $4.8 million in emergency aid for families facing crisis, in addition to caregiver and family support that recognizes the unique sacrifices of military life with programs designed to sustain, uplift, and transform.

Essential to our strategic goal of stable and secure military families, there are now 229 veteran and wounded warrior families living in our Homes on the Homefront, permanent mortgage-free housing program. Through our family support programs, we provided more than $5 million in school supplies for military children as their parents faced the ever-increasing costs of education today, and we helped those parents reduce their stress at the holidays by providing more than 26,000 toys for military kids across the country.

Critical to our ability to deliver the programs and services essential for the military families we serve is to meet our strategic goal of sustainable revenue growth. We couldn’t have achieved such a level of impact in 2014 if it weren’t for the generous support of more than 1,100 corporate, foundation, and individual donors. Working together, we raised well over $20 million in cash, setting a new record, but more importantly enabled us to address more challenges for military families than ever before.

As we look to amplify our impact for those we serve, we know we can’t do so without fulfilling our strategic goal of ensuring a highly collaborative culture in partnering with others to best serve military families. Thanks to the George W. Bush Institute’s Military Service Initiative, Operation Homefront was honored to be one of only 25 organizations nationally chosen to be evaluated for ways to better meet the needs of post-9/11 veterans and their families. This research, with more to come, demonstrates the quantifiable impact that is transparent for our donors, partners, and those military families we serve.

Our team worked hard to be good stewards of the resources entrusted to us in 2014. Our efficiency rating remained outstanding among our peers, with 92 percent of expenditures going directly to programs supporting our military families, equating to nearly $49 million spent on programs and just $4.4 million on administration and fundraising.

The needs of our military and veteran families call for generational commitment from the American public. On behalf of everyone whose lives we’ve changed for a better tomorrow, we’re indebted to all those who stand by us today, and we look forward to standing with you tomorrow and beyond. Thank you for your unflagging support.

With gratitude,

Tim Farrell Interim President and CEO

Genentech Foundation ► “Because thousands of caregivers for our nation’s service members need our support and attention” sums up the generosity of the Genentech Foundation of San Francisco, California and their grantmaking for Operation Homefront’s Hearts of Valor™ program. The Foundation, a private charitable organization, was established in 2002 by biotech giant Genentech. Genentech is committed to being a strong corporate citizen, and the Foundation is one of the most important ways in which it gives back to local communities.

Genentech’s ongoing support for Hearts of Valor™, including a $100,000 grant in 2014, honors the service and sacrifice of those who care for our nation’s wounded, ill, and injured warriors by providing a community of support based on empathy and mutual understanding. Thanks in part to the Genentech Foundation, caregivers across the country have an established network for peer counseling, staff support for on-line forums, specialized retreats, and newsletters and other communication targeting their specific needs.

In addition to their support of Hearts of Valor™, the Foundation made an additional grant of $50,000 to support Operation Homefront’s transitional housing programs.

The Home Depot Foundation ► The Home Depot Foundation is a longtime supporter of Operation Homefront, and their commitment to military families remained strong in 2014. A major component of the Foundation’s financial support – most recently a grant of over $1.8 million – is to fund emergency repairs on the homes of wounded warriors and their families. The generosity of The Home Depot Foundation has funded urgent home repairs for hundreds of military families for things like foundation repairs, new windows, and disability upgrades. For some military families, the support of The Home Depot Foundation has literally put a roof over their heads.

In addition, the Foundation has made Operation Homefront a focus of their Celebration of Service program. The Celebration of Service runs from September through Veterans Day. The goal of the project is to provide our military community members with a home beautification make-over that utilizes the skillsets of Team Depot, Home Depot’s in-store skilled workers. Through Celebration of Service, Home Depot employees dedicate their own time and expertise to help our military families make their homes better places to live.

By the end of our 2014 grant period in June 2015, we look forward to having conducted more than 25 Celebration of Service projects in partnership with the Foundation and Home Depot employees.

Motorola Solutions Foundation ► Not only does Motorola Solutions Foundation help Operation Homefront with a generous grant to support the three Operation Homefront Villages, but they also volunteer in force: 75 employees, a truckload of yard supplies, hours and hours of sweat and toil digging in the dirt to create a beautiful backyard landscape. This type of roll up your sleeves and get to work approach exemplifies the Motorola Solutions Foundation and its employees modeling what is a core value for the company – giving back. With employees located around the globe, Motorola Solutions seeks to benefit the communities where it operates. The company achieves this by making strategic grants, forging strong community partnerships and fostering innovation. Their $75,000 grant to Operation Homefront’s transitional housing program in 2014 was a natural fit to this mission.

As Motorola Solutions seeks to be a leader in corporate citizenship, their employees are actively engaged in communities around the world – including Hanover Park, Illinois. So that’s why a beautiful September day saw busloads of Motorola Solutions staff descend on a service member’s home there, in an effort to give back as thanks for the sacrifices of military service. We’re grateful to Motorola Solutions for their support and for making life a little brighter for those in need.
