MessageEvery year in these 16 years of activities of IMDS in social projects the conviction grows that education, in tandem with a strong familiar support, is one of the most valuable social transformation tools.

Education, claims economist Sérgio Besserman Vianna in an article published in O Globo, on 11.01.15. “is within the root of the main problems, and is one of the keys for any solution in Brazil”. To him, it is possible to overcome an inequality like ours distributing assets, and not only income. And knowledge, he says, is the main asset of the 21th century, which “can be distributed without the need of any expropriation”.

In 2014 IMDS invested in good quality education based on three pillars: trained teachers; stimulating pedagogic ambience for the development of the children; and the integration family-school. This work, which is developed during four years – the duration of a complete school term – results in children well prepared to the literacy process and in families with solid affective and protective ties to their children, apart from a significant socioeconomic strengthening.

The families assisted by IMDS are exerting their citizenship: returning to class rooms in order to finish their studies; having personal documents issued; becoming professionally trained and entering the work market; by valuing the moments in family they bring up their children with more dialogue and less violence. These are yet fundamental aspects for the children to develop in a positive ambience that allows their physical, cognitive, and psychosocial development.

In Três Rios, in the rural zone of Rio de Janeiro, Municipal School Marquês de Salamanca increased its class frequency so as to offer activities during the school’s second shift, benefitting its 97 students, through the Federal government’s program Mais Educação. The informatics center, in partnership with Instituto Embratel, was included in our grid of activities.

Cantinho Feliz Educational SpaceCantinho Feliz Educational Space served 100 children in the year 2014, and carried on with the work of social promotion of the families, an important program of strengthening of our students’ family nuclei.

IMDS used strategies of development of skills and potentials by means of actions of sheltering, professional training and income generation. Once included in the projects, the families were encouraged to become part of the society and gain autonomy in the social and economic levels, as well as access to leisure services and guarantee of rights.

Marquês de Salamanca Institute, during its 18 years of work, is an outstanding reference to the communities of Santa Teresa district. The figures are the proof of this success: in 2014, we served 4,467 people. This achievement is also of our maintainers and partners who invest in the social transformation and make our work possible.

Cantinho Feliz Pre-School“If education alone cannot transform society, neither does the latter change without it”. Paulo Freire

The transforming dimension leveraged by an education of quality is the pillar that supports all the work performed at Cantinho Feliz Crèche and Pre-School. The idea behind this project is to propose educational actions that facilitate the integral development of children encouraging the reflection about their actions and contributing to the shaping of human beings able to act in the world with autonomy, responsibility, reflection and critical judgement. During the year 2014, inspired by the World Cup, which was hosted in our country, we embraced educational actions in the scope of the annual pedagogic project titled “Da Bola do Mundo ao Mundo da Bola”.

In the first semester, the children researched different cultural manifestations linked to culinary, arts, music, dance, literature, like o Boi de Mamão, a cultural manifestation typical of the country’s Southern region; the plays typical of the North and Northern regions; the way of being and living of the Amazon Forest’s indians. They tried different flavors of the Brazilian culinary, discovered typical fruits of each region and researched Brazilian animals, like lobo-guará and tatu-bola, the World Cup mascot. Involved in this cultural diversity, we ended the first semester with our traditional Junine Party, when the kids played the role of Boi de Mamão, an indigenous dance, folk music, and danced forró.

17

In the second semester, each group of students chose one country participating in the World Cup to take approach to a culture in principle so stranger and so distant. The culmination of this work can be seen in the school year end with the musical presentation of children dressing Portuguese, Spanish, German,Indigenous and African clothes.

So many discoveries approached us to the natural and social worlds through ludic proposals,which brought much knowledge related to different areas of knowledge. To run, jump, play, learn, talk, reflect, realize, get enchanted wih each new knowledge. Smile at each discovery! Await, anxiously, a new day begin so that everything starts over again. So is our day by day. It is this desire of knowledge that causes everyone involved in this proposal of education, adults and children, to be sure about this transforming role towards our society. Since very early, it is possible to notice the progress, the transformation and the impact that the work done by Crèche and Pre-School Cantinho Feliz causes in the lives of the families that take part in this project.

The training and chemistry of the whole team of Cantinho Feliz is fundamental for the work of IMDS . During the year, we hold meetings for the training of our teachers, supported by semestrial pedagogic discussions, under the supervision of the teams of Coordenadoria Regional de Educação – CRE. One of our teachers applied to a qualification course to work with special children, once we have children with this profile matriculated in our Pre-School.

Psychossocial Assessment of StudentsWhen we assess children, we do it grounded on the form they relate to adults, children, objects and available spaces, considering their uniqueness. The teacher’s role is to create spaces and situations in which the children may develop, stimulating them in the different areas of knowledge: language, logic-mathematical reasoning, socialization and psychomotricity.

For such purpose, the planning of activities must be in consonance with the children’s cognitive and motor possibilities, in accordance with each age range. In 2014, we maintained the semestrial assessments. The reading of the report is done in individual meetings with the parents..

“We must generate as much courage as the degree of difficulty we face.”Dalai Lama.

The work with the families was focused on the strengthening of family ties and on the stimulus to their emancipation, through collective discussions in the operational groups which take place, fortnightly, on Fridays, in IMDS headquarters. Apart from these meetings, we provide individual appointments with the psychologist and social assistant linked to the project. It is important to highlight that in 2014, this team was even more present in the quotidian of Cantinho Feliz Pre-School, through meetings with parents and individual interviews.

Considering that the family nucleus is the first ambience in which it occurs the constitution of a subject, the psychosocial team of IMDS tries to act for the strengthening of the families, by means of a planning of actions that result in the desired transformations.

For the planned actions to be put into practice it will be necessary to approach the families of the inter-sectorial networks (projects, programs and services available), so that they percept themselves as citizens of rights and duties. This requires that our team is always seeking partnerships with other policies of care in order to increase the access of this public to the services.

Activities/interventions performed:

58 Operative groups;

531 individual care procedures.

Account

“The participation in the group represents redemption to me. Prior to the group I was really lost.“R..., Leite, participant in the operative groups.

R. came to IMDS in one complicated moment of her life, as her adolescent daughter had just given birth. R. is a single mother and has another two kids – aged 4 and 18. She is householder and does her best to support them. With the birth of the granddaughter, she felt obliged to take on this other responsibility, as the father did not take on the paternity. By feeling supported in her pain and observing the trajectory of life and transformation of her colleagues, R. felt encouraged and transformed her complaints in actions, with the help of Reacender and IMDS.

Thus, she helped her daughter to file a petition of recognition of parentage of her granddaughter and train for the work market, conclude high school and attend the informatics classes in IMDS. R. changed her work shift to the night, as in so doing she could work and take care of the granddaughter in the morning, while her daughter studied. The adolescent felt motivated to study again. At the same time, R. encouraged her older son to participate in the program Jovem Aprendiz and decided to matriculate him in Cultura Inglesa, a partner of IMDS. In the beginning of the year, R. was dismissed and provisionally lost the younger daughter’s custody. Her former partner claimed that she had no time to take care of the daughter (during the night, the girl was looked after by the older brothers while R. was at work). R..., looked for individual psychosocial support, showing despair due to the uncertainties of future. The team made a new plan of action and she quickly recovered reliance and self-esteem. She recovered the custody of the daughter and got a new job, in a shift that made possible for her to administrate the care for the daughter and granddaughter. Her younger daughter was referred to Cantinho Feliz Pre-School. Presently, R. continues participating in the activities of Reacender.

Toque de Mão Project

“As human beings, we are all entrepreneurs. Some of us discovered this and had the chance and luck.”Muhammad Yunus

In 2014, IMDS maintained the partneship with the Gênesis Institute/PUC-Rio which works concepts like entrepreneurship, sustainability, income generation and group work with Cooperative Toque de Mão. There was also improvement of the work tools in order to help the artisans with the organizing of their work routine. This way, some material and sales control sheets were reviewed, cash flow, and a plan of communication and marketing was created for the sale of products.

IMDS also counted with the support of Lojas Renner Institute and the company SAP. Both promoted the work of social responsibility dedicated to the empowerment of women from low income communities, by means of entrepreneur activities and income generation. With the support of both partners it was possible to maintain the quality of the work through the purchase of materials and maintaining of personnel.

At the end of a year of work, we noticed that the group of artisans underwent changes in its structure. Some remained in the group in a committed way; others, left the cooperative to endeavour on their own and share their experiences and knowledge with other women in the community, thus contributing to the development of the local economy and improvement in other people’s quality of life. Occasionally, Toque de Mão Cooperativa invites the artisans who leave it to participate in its productions, acting in the sewing area.

Activities Performed:• Acquisition of new customers, like: Reciclarte, Bananeira Interiores, and fidelization of old ones, such as Missiza, SAP,

Concremat, REDE ASTA, Maricota and Ecletic, as well as natural persons;

• Participation in bazaars, like: ASSOCIAÇÃO SAÚDE CRIANÇA, CONCREMAT, UNIMED, AMAVALE, BRASIL ORIGINAL (SEBRAE) and participation in the event “Artes de Portas Abertas”, in Santa Teresa;

• 8,412 products manufactured;

• R$ 60,211.00 generated with the sale of products.

190 pieces produced in class and 247 participants

The activities of the project Oficinas Compartilhar consist in presenting different handicraft techniques to the residents of the communities around IMDS, and to the mothers of students of Cantinho Feliz Pre-School. In 2014, apart from the techniques of embroidering and sewing, we presented crochet, whose acceptance was immediate. The introduction of this technique motivated the entrance of other women in the project and the revealing of new talents.

The handicraft activities – which also includes the mothers of the students of Cantinho Feliz Pre-School – take place monthly in the building of the Pre-School. The objective of this activity is to approach them to the opportunities created by the projects of training and income generation

Informatics School“By giving people the power to share, we are making the world more transparent.”Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook

The Informatics School has been through important changes in its management, in 2014. Following an agreement between IMDS and Monteiro de Carvalho State School, where it worked from 2009 to 2013, the school was transferred back to the facilities of the own institute, whose infrastructure supports higher internet speed and better access to the social networks.

It was also significant the increase in the number of students in comparison to the previous years, which is consistent with the assessment by Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia (IBGE), which revealed that between the years 2005 and 2011 there was an increase of 223.3% in the number of people over 50 years old who access the internet.

Based on this public’s spontaneous demand, we included new classes in the schedule grid. During the classes, the satisfaction of students exploring the universe of informatics is visible. We noticed that digital inclusion represents to third agers an important way of social insertion as they interact virtually with family members and friends, and use the services available on the web, such as internet banking, Income Tax report and leisure. As they dismiss the belief that they would not learn due to the age, they are capable to dare, even acquiring new equipment and portable media, like smartphones.

To young people, we offer activities related to the work universe and responsible use of the internet, with the objective, among others, of showing its risks. In 2014, we worked with the project Telas Amigas, in partnership with Sala Futura, of Fundação Roberto Marinho, reinforcing the importance of ethics, the danger of cyber bullying and the respect to privacy.

Ginga Social ProjectSports activities are initiatives that pave the way for children and young people to express their opinions and ideas, becoming agents of transformation.UNICEF -2012

We increased the project’s actions with our acting in the community of Fallet, thanks to the partnership of IMDS with Associação de Moradores do Vale – AMAVALE. Presently, we serve about 80 children of the community and its surroundings. Apart from this, Ginga Social Project revitalized the sports court, which, in the future, must be transformed in a multiuse court.

Another great achievement of the Project, in 2014, was the beginning of the serving of children of classes Pré I and II, of Cantinho Feliz Pre- School. 50 children were matriculated, 25 of them in judo, twice a week (Pré- I), and 25 in the activities of Court Sports Initiation, ( Pré - II). The year of the World Cup afforded us incredible experiences. The monitors of Ginga Social had the opportunity to participate as guardians of the National Flag in Maracanã Stadium, and some of our students received as present tickets for two other games of the Championship.

Ginga Social has been contributing very much to the integration of IMDS’ projects, as through this partnership of ours with Fundação Gol de Letra/adidas we identified that the families served are circulating by various social initiatives of the Institute.

Activities Performed:• 26 meetings with partners (CMDCA, CMAS, social service network of Santa Teresa, Institute of Psychiatry, Center

of Assistance Henry Wallon);

• 1 team meeting;

• 03 parent meetings;

• Events: Guardians of adidas Flag in 02 World Cup games; futsal friendly with ACM team; event Street football World, with the team of adidas/FIFA; 02 festivals of judo; celebration of 01 year of adolescents monitoring; Children’s Day; 02 monthly fitness activities for IMDS teams (relaxing activities at the end of the work shift); exam and change of belts in the end of the year.

• 03 rides for the monitors and students of the Project – Jardim Zoológico, Parque Aquático and Museu da Vida, in FIOCRUZ.

Monteiro de Carvalho State School

“My sole desire, my music theme, my diamond, is education.” Rubem Alves

The school year 2014 was marked by modifications in the school’s management, such as the substitution of directors and pedagogic coordination. Under new guidelines, Monteiro de Carvalho State School reorganized to solve some old problems, like the maintenance of the space and team of teachers. Marquês de Salamanca Institute, as in the previous years, articulated with the State Education Secretariat in search of new strategies that might foster the improvement of the quality of the care for the 900 students and their persons responsible.

There are very many challenges in the field of education in our country. However, even with all the school’s problems, some students stood out and obtained excellent results in the entrance exam, getting their acceptance letters to public and private universities, apart from ranking very well in the Mathematics National Olympics:

• 1st place at UERJ for the Physical Education course, best grade in the State Public Network – Student Paulo Carlos Couto Júnior;

• 7th place at UERJ, for the Computer Science course – Moisés Cardoso Couto;

• ENEM approval for Veiga de Almeida – Social Service – Aline Coutinho – student at NEJA – Núcleo de Educação de Jovens e Adultos;

• Certificate of Honorable Mention performance in the Mathematics Olympics – Núbia Besser and Rafael Besser.

Marquês de Salamanca Municipal SchoolKindness Generates Kindness. This is the conducting theme of the pedagogic activities performed at Marquês de Salamanca Municipal School, which served 97 students in 2014. The school obtained significant achievements this year, like the implementation of the Program Mais Educação, whose objective is the extension of the school shift and the curricular organization in the perspective of integral education, offering activities like dance, music, English, kitchen garden, sports, informatics and fields of knowledge. We noticed that the introduction of the Program Mais Educação resulted in the improvement of the children’s school performance, as the number of students who failed to pass was considerably reduced by 4%.

Another important achievement was the refurbishment of the sports court. IMDS articulated with the Municipal Education Secretariat and, with the new painting, floor and facilities, the school’s court became a reference for the leisure and sports activities.

Some questions were challenging to IMDS and to the school team, like the need of one more professional for Infantile Education and solutions related to the stability of the internet connection. In order to try solving these questions, IMDS articulated with the Municipal Government of Três Rios.

Informatics CenterThe Informatics Center, a partnership of IMDS with Embratel Institute and the Municipal Education Secretariat of Três Rios, based in Marquês de Salamanca Municipal School, served the 97 students of the school and residents in the Estrada Itajoana community.

The center worked with 16 computers connected to a server with access to the internet and based on Linux System. During the classes, the students learned contents such as tux paint, libbero office write, libero office impress e libbero office cal, all of them equivalent to those of the system. The course lasted 11 months, with classes during the week and in weekends, in order to serve the workers of the local farms. In all, 25 students finished the course.

Regarding the activities developed with the school’s students in the school’s second shift, the informatics teacher tried to ally the pedagogic contents taught in class to the informatics contents. The students worked with the theme of the year, Gentileza Gera Gentileza (Kindness Generates Kindness), typing texts related to ethical values, illustrating gestures of kindness in the computer, using the internet to research the life of Profeta Gentileza.

The residents of Estrada Itajoana went to the Informatics Center to perform searches, researches and other services, reinforcing the role of this center as collective space for the use of technology, being a reference to the community.

HandicraftThe artisans of the handicraft workshop produced 926 pieces, during the year 2014, for clients like Sebrae, Ainda Tem Uso, Missiza, L Occitane, Les Savon and Bananeira Interiores. To promote the project, IMDS made a handicraft workshop, using the felt technique, with 27 mothers of students of Marquês de Salamanca Municipal School.

In the next year, the program will be extended.

CulinaryDuring the months of November and December, some women participated in the culinary workshop, producing biscuits and candies for the 70 handicraft baskets made for clients and partners.

The handicraft and culinary workshops are important tools that IMDS uses to foster income generation and social inclusion among the community of Estrada Itajona.

Both activities represented an important alternative for income generation and social inclusion.

Health UnitThe Family Health Program – PSF – was implanted in Brazil by the Ministry of Health, in 1994. Known as “Family Health Strategy”, it reverses the assistance model in which the patient’s emergency care was predominant, in the majority of the hospitals. The family is now the object of attention and the project prioritizes the promotion of health, the prevention and recovery of diseases.

The Health Unit that assists the Community Estrada Itajoana aims to follow these new guidelines of PSF and is linked to the Municipal Health Secretariat of Três Rios. The Health Unit maintains a general practitioner, one dentist, two health agents, apart from an orderly and a nurse, who, fortnightly, collect material for preventive exams, in women. Speeches on health for the students of Marquês de Salamanca Municipal School and their family members are also part of the program.

The experience of IMDS with this project indicated the need to maintain a continuous preventive work in GP and dentistry clinics, making the families aware of the importance of the physical and oral care. Among the most frequent diagnoses are hypertension, diabetes and verminosis.

Like many health units in our country, we are impacted by the deficiency of the infrastructure to do a job of high quality. IMDS has been trying to minimize this effect articulating with the local agents of the health area to seek solutions and improve the quality of care to the population that lives there.

Financial AssessmentLike in the previous years, the year 2014 was characterized by the overcoming and great challenges of the whole team involved in the social projects of IMDS.

Compared to the year 2013, there was an increase in the total transfer from our partners and maintainers, making possible the continuance of the social investments and the maintaining of the quality of the projects already developed by IMDS. The end of small partnerships in 2014 did not have financial impacts and was offset by the transfer of part of the main maintainers.

In continuance of last year’s policy, we kept the administrative costs below 20%, prioritizing the allocation of a bigger part of the resources for the actions programmed for the social projects.

For the year 2015, IMDS will make all efforts to seek new partnerships to make possible the development of new projects and provide improvement in the quality of the existing social investments.
