Country Director's Message !

This year marks ADRA's 25 anniversary of working with people in poverty and distress in Vietnam. The passing year was marked with our specific focus on strengthening capacity of our partners and beneficiar ies in disas ter r i sk management, climate change adaptation and leadership, project cycle management and holistic economic development. This has provided them with skills and techniques to design, implement, manage and evaluate their own project and ensure the sustainability of the work done. Undoubtedly, 2015 will bring important changes in the fields of social and economic matters, environment, and relief and development in Vietnam. We hope that ADRA will continue to provide high quality assistance and services to those most in need and reach even more people across Vietnam.

SECTOR HIGHLIGHTS

Broad changes are taking place all over the world and domestically. This causes a tremendous impact on the development work of ADRA and other International Non-governmental Organizations. To tackle more effectively the new challenges, four working sectors in the context of Vietnam are strategically highlighted in 2014 and will be pursued throughout 2015. These sectors address urgent needs and relevant issues across socio-economic facets.

Under the mentioned sectors, cross-cutting issues including Gender, HIV/AIDS, Environment, Child Protection, Disability Inc lu s ion , Pover ty Reduc t ion and Participation are incorporated in projects’ goals and integral to all implemented activities. ADRA pursues a twin-track approach to these issues mainstreaming; on one hand, having cross-cutting issues carried out directly at different levels, on the other hand mainstreaming them internally within the organization and programs, ensuring the technical and support staff are trained in and informed of different thematic areas.

Livelihood

ADRA Vietnam works with the impoverished communities to build up capacity while addressing poverty reduction. Systematic and context-based training courses are delivered as one of core project outputs, so as to increase personal know-how and encourage trainees to initiate their own models for living. !At the beginning, project grants are provided to assist piloting and implementing of household economic schemes. The local people then apply their newly acquired knowledge in finance managemnt, business planning and borrowing loans in order to develop further their models, in return earn more income from the initiatives.

A d d i t i o n a l l y , sharing platforms are established a t l o c a l a n d organizat ional level, that helps open chances for farmers to access and question the "good practices" from the others. This proves effectiveness at stimulating the learning process. !

448 household income generation models are developed, varying from raising pigs, cows, chicken, duck to cultivating chili, melon, orange and etc.

We also sit with the local government officials, who are held responsibility to translate the policies and development plans from the central to the grassroots, in order to identify and assess the needs, the constrains and the opportunities, so we can together work on improving the situation.

When it comes to sustainable development, local leadership and good governance present 2 key pillars which help build up and fortify the whole societal structure. While the former generates motivation to bring initiatives into practice, the latter ensures certain creditability and make those ideas more worthy. After the period of delivering relief and welfare to people in urgent need, ADRA in Vietnam is moving to the stage of empowering the community through different tools and methods. We empower the local government officials and community leaders, so they are able to replicate training on new knowledge, techniques and awareness raising. Through this process, community institutions are strengthened so to ensure integrity and transparency. !Gender equality is embraced and women are considered as integral partners in the development process. The number of female participants, especially from ethnic minority groups, is outstanding (51%), reflecting good results achieved from previous ADRA projects at the same localities (eg: Project improving literacy).

Corporate EngagementEvery first friday morning of each month in 2014, thousands of people working at the largest international airport construction near by Hanoi gathered for an informative and training session of Health and Security. This was one of the activities composing the most highlighted projects about HIV/AIDS & Sexually Transmitted Diseases Prevention that ADRA Vietnam implemented with a largest construction company. !!!!!!!While utilizing expertises and a set of tools from our profile of a widely range projects, ADRA in Vietnam is able to engage in joint projects with the private sector in assisting them to help them design strategic actions to perform social responsibility. This is expected to go beyond philanthrapy activites, even though those are also highly encouraged. We look forward to working with the private entities to effectively stimulate social impacts.

We work to extend the network of sponsors and donors, so people's voice can be heard and more individuals can lend hands to those in the poorest places to improve their life.

"

ADRA Vietnam works with groups and individuals to bring direct support to people and communities in special need. Through Connections Program, we design and partner with other ADRA offices to implement meaningful voluntary projects.3 "

Testimonials By mid-year, we increased our herd of ducks to 100, which we had never been able to do before. My whole family is looking forward to the profit we gain, so our girls' tuition fees can be covered. They will have some more new school supplies and we can reinvest into the next herd with the money left. By the end of the year, we receive assistance from ADRA's

project to build our own latrine, no more open defeacation so hopefully my children's health will get better. We learned to share and study the good things from each other. This contributed to strenthening our community relationships a lot.

- Lo Thi Suong, Cao Bang !It has been a busy year both for us and our beneficiaries at the construction site of TAISEI project. All the activities, the regular education session, the music show and HIV test were conducted according to the plan. We are happy to be a part of the project, contribute our work to improve the knowledge and change the behavior of the workers and the people at the local communities. It’s a great feeling to see the change of the people when they are confident to answer all the questions asked during the education sessions. The project ends with the great achievement of its goal: T2 construction is finished without any bad social effect to the immediate communities.

- Vu Lan Huong, ADRA Vietnam Programs Assistant !!
