Dear Friends,

Lift Urban Portland experienced considerable change, growth, and some challenges in fiscal year 2015 (July 1, 2014–June 31, 2015). Our food programs grew to serve eight percent more people than the previous year, Preston’s Pantry added an extra day and is now open three days each week, the Food for Kids program tested a new model that greatly improved the quality of service for participating families, and other new programs were launched to help people use the food they received in healthy ways and to help strengthen community support networks.

In spite of a challenging financial year, our passionate and dedicated volunteers and staff helped make the increase in services possible. Since joining the organization I have been awed and inspired over and over again by our volunteers and the neighbors we serve. Visiting the annual Christmas Dinner with my daughter and witnessing the welcoming, respectful, and community-based environment of that event will be a lifelong memory. I am also excited by the record-breaking success of the May 2015 food drive and thankful to the many volunteers and supporters who made the success possible.

Lift Urban Portland entered the new fiscal year as a leaner organization with a smaller budget that focuses on direct mission-supporting programs. I feel we are well positioned to ensure the growth and development of the new programs launched last year, and in the coming year we will continue to ensure all residents have access to healthy foods, have knowledge of how to use the foods they receive in healthy ways, and have a strengthened community support network.

I invite you to help our low-income neighbors in northwest and downtown Portland by making a donation to Lift Urban Portland or by becoming a volunteer. Together I know we can make a difference.

Food

We believe that everyone, regardless of income, should have access to healthy food. • Last year, Preston’s Pantry provided

5,217 people with a five-day supply of groceries.

• The Food for Kids program tested a new model that provides produce, eggs, and other perishable goods to families.

• 1,330 food boxes were delivered to low-income homebound residents who were unable to visit the pantry. We believe in providing not only access to

food, but also education about how to cook and use it in healthy ways.• Food tastings at Preston’s Pantry allow

guests to sample foods that they may not be familiar with.

• Meal kits provide simple recipes with pre-measured ingredients so pantry guests can easily replicate healthy, delicious meals in their own homes.

• The newly launched Supper Club program brings residents at low-income apartment buildings together to cook and eat a meal, presenting a natural opportunity to teach basic cooking skills and nutrition education.

Lift Urban Portland uses food to nourish, educate, and engage low-income residents.

We believe that cooking and eating together strengthens community ties.• The 2014 Christmas meal, hosted by Congregation Beth

Israel, served more than 400 plates of food in a safe, festive environment to those in need of a warm meal on Christmas day. Seventy-five meals were delivered directly to the homes of low-income residents unable to travel to the meal.

• Supper Club, launched in January, brought together a consistent group of residents at Gallagher Plaza to cook and eat ten meals together over six months. During one of the meals, supper club participants cooked lasagna for the entire building, further breaking down barriers of isolation between neighbors.
