Family&Resources&
Gio’s!Garden!strives!to!help!the!whole!family.!Along!with!
being!a!therapeutic!respite!center!for!the!child,!the!staff!
help!find!resources!for!the!families.!Each!family!receives!
information!about!programs!and!funding!sources!in!
Dane!County!that!might!be!helpful!for!their!unique!
situation.!!!
Gio’s!Garden!is!helping!families!build!a!support!system!of!
other!people!who!understand!what!they!are!going!
through.!Families!are!connected!to!each!other!through!
center!wide!family!get\togethers!and!a!Facebook!group!
that!is!only!seen!by!Gio’s!Garden!families.!!In!2013!a!
family!newsletter!was!also!created!to!connect!families!to!
community!events,!trainings!and!more!resources.!!

Gio’s&Garden&Grows&in&2013:&&!
Gio’s!Garden!provided!a!total!of!2,579!hours!of!therapeutic!respite!care!in!2013,!up!from!
227!hours!in!2012.!74%!of!the!hours!of!care!occurred!between!July!and!December.!
!
Gio’s!Garden!added!29!new!children!to!its!program!in!2013;!bringing!the!total!up!to!35!different!children!served!since!its!opening!in!
June!of!2012.!
!42!new!families!requested!information!about!Gio’s!Garden!and!other!disability!
related!services!in!2013,!compared!to!16!in!2012.!!
The!direct!care!staff!grew!from!two!staff!in!2012!to!eleven!staff!in!2013.!Another!full!time!staff!was!added!in!October!2013,!for!a!
total!of!two!professional!staff.!
!In!2013,!33!different!volunteers!worked!directly!with!the!children,!providing!over!
800!hours!of!care.!In!addition,!two!full\time!summer!interns!provided!1,120!hours!of!un\
paid!service!working!directly!with!the!children.!
!
Therapeutic&Respite&Center&
Gio’s!Garden!is!a!place!for!parents!to!drop!off!their!
child!with!special!needs!while!they!can!take!a!break!from!the!demanding!care!that!many!of!the!children!need.!In!2013,!the!program!received!42!requests!
from!new!families!looking!for!respite!care,!verifying!the!need!for!a!therapeutic!respite!center!in!Dane!
County.!!!While!at!Gio’s!Garden,!the!children!work!on!
therapeutic!and!developmental!goals!such!as!movement,!trunk!control,!social!interactions,!
cognitive!learning,!and!appropriate!behaviors.!Families!are!able!to!schedule!up!to!six!hours!a!week!of!therapeutic!respite!at!Gio’s!Garden.!!

I!am!so!excited!to!report!that!2013!was!a!very!successful!year!!The!
program!grew!to!serve!more!families!and!provide!more!hours!of!
care!to!children!with!special!needs.!The!second!half!of!the!year!saw!
the!most!growth!and!we!were!able!to!double!our!staff!that!provides!direct!therapeutic!care!to!the!kiddos.!Most)importantly,)we)were)able)to)keep)our)service)free)of)charge)to)all)families!!!
In!December!2012!we!made!the!big!decision!to!purchase!the!
facility!that!we!call!home.!With!the!growth!we!have!seen,!we!know!that!was!the!right!decision,!and!that!Gio’s!Garden!is!a!program!that!
is!going!to!succeed!and!thrive.!And!thanks!to!our!donors!and!
volunteers!Gio’s!Garden!was!able!to!make!$61,127!in!additional!
mortgage!payments!during!2013.!!!
It!is!only!because!of!your!remarkable!generosity!and!support!that!
we!were!able!to!grow!in!2013!and!serve!our!mission!of!nurturing!
and!strengthening!families!who!have!children!with!special!needs.!We!couldn’t!be!more!grateful!to!everyone!that!has!supported,!and!
