We have continued to grow our membership, expanded and improved our program and event offerings, introduced new member benefits, and as you will see in the Treasure’s Report, we have posted strong numbers financially too. And in addition to all that, we have still managed to emphasize a commitment to the triple bottom line of social, environmental, and economic development. Providing great value to our membership continues to be a key theme for the BBOT. Our new partnership with First Data Canada has been very well received, and has been an excellent addition to our already terrific package of member benefits. From an event standpoint, we have gone bigger and better than ever before, and we have been rewarded with large – often sellout – crowds, and unprecedented levels of sponsorship. New programs, like our ‘High Tea’ series, blend learning and information sharing with fun and networking, while simultaneously helping us strengthen and grow our membership and reach new segments of the Burnaby business community. This past year has also seen the establishment of two new programs that are quickly becoming key pillars of the BBOT: the Pledge for a Sustainable Community and the Access Student Career Development Program. The Pledge, which was just officially launched early last month, provides program participants with access to valuable resources, tips and case studies to help them create a more sustainable workplace. They also have the opportunity to share their successes, serve as role models, and pledge to take on new challenges. Already over 80 businesses from across the Lower Mainland have taken the Pledge and committed to reducing their environmental impact. Our goal now is to expand the Pledge, increase our numbers, and engage businesses not only locally, but across BC and beyond. We are also now closing in on the end of our inaugural session of our student development program, Access. Approximately 60 students have spent time this year attending events, participating in workshops, and meeting with Connectors from across the BBOT membership. The feedback from students and Connectors alike has been tremendous and we look forward to offering an even better program starting next October. As always, we have continued to work closely with the City of Burnaby, our community partners, and Burnaby’s business leaders to achieve strong results when advocating for, or working on, an issue of importance to our membership. To ensure this community remains a great place to do business we have established a new Economic Development Committee, which will allow us to be heard on an even broader range of topics than ever before. And of course, ultimately our success would not be possible without the ongoing support of our membership – the very foundation of this organization. On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff, thank you for making us a strong, dynamic and sustainable board of trade. Sincerely, Leza Muir, Chair of the Board Burnaby Board of Trade welcoming dynamic global sustainable annual report 2013

statement of operationsFor The Year Ended December 31, 2012

2012 financials

treasurer’s reportAs Treasurer for the Burnaby Board of Trade, I am pleased to present the Audited Financial Statements, as prepared by Kanester Johal, Chartered Accountants, for the year ended December 31, 2012.

After a year of transition in 2011, fiscal 2012 was the first full year under management of the new Executive and staff. The Burnaby Board of Trade experienced a return to administrative stability and strong financial performance. Net Revenues grew by 7.5%, due in large part to a 10% growth in Membership revenue. Membership revenues continue to be the greatest source of revenue for the Burnaby Board of Trade, accounting for 50% of its overall net revenues. We thank the membership for its ongoing support and we continue to strive to provide the highest level of value to our business community.

Functions such as the Burnaby Business Excellence Award Gala and the Christmas Luncheon represent 20% (2011 -15%) of net revenue collected and we would also like to thank all the attendees and corporate sponsors for their generous contributions and support in making these events such a success. The Burnaby Board of Trade continues to work closely with the City of Burnaby on the Economic Development Strategy and we thank the City for its financial support as well.

Due to the prudent management of both direct costs and expenses, in combination with the increase in revenue streams, the Burnaby Board of Trade reported a bottom line excess of revenue over said costs of $14,809. This has allowed the Board to build its cash position as at December 31, 2012 to $358,838 (2011 - $334,348).

The Audit and Finance Committee continues to assist the Executive in managing and developing administrative and financial controls and policies to ensure financial information is relevant, reliable and accurate, the Board’s assets are safeguarded and recorded, and the risks of today’s business environment are prudently managed.

In closing, I would like to thank the Executive and staff for their hard work throughout the year, and, as well, I also thank the members of the Audit and Finance Committee for their time and contributions to the Board.

Sincerely

Dirk Odenwald, CGATreasurer
