Mission
Our mission is to connect
people from all walks of life
to the natural world through
shared outdoor education and
adventure programs. Using
outdoor adventure as a medium,
WI programs inspire personal
growth, enhanced awareness of
the environment, and community
integration on a scalable basis,
making a measurable impact on
the environment and society.
Greg Lais and Tom Nelson
Dear Friends - As a supporter of Wilderness Inquiry (WI), you are on the forefront of a
movement that is providing life-changing connections to nature for tens of thousands
of people from all walks of life.
You already know what the research is starting to confirm—spending time outdoors
boosts creativity, self-confidence, health and wellbeing. A recent evaluation of
our Urban Wilderness Canoe Adventures program conducted by the University
of Minnesota suggests that time spent outdoors can help increase performance
in school for disadvantaged students.
Because of your belief in our mission, last year we served 16,345 people on 334
inclusive outdoor events. Your support made participation possible for people who
would otherwise not have had the opportunity, including urban youth, low-income
families, veterans, and people with disabilities.
Your contributions provided scholarships and support for people like John, a veteran
who is blind as a result of his service to our country. John received a scholarship to
participate on a 7-day trip in Minnesota’s North Woods. John said, “Canoeing the
Boundary Waters is an experience I will never forget! After becoming blind, I did not
think this was possible for me. The healing and confidence I gained is immeasurable!”
As Wilderness Inquiry enters its 35th year, we dedicate this annual report to you—our
incredible community of supporters. You are a passionate and important voice for the
belief that the outdoors is not for only a privileged few, but rather for all to enjoy as
part of our national heritage.
Best regards,
Greg Lais Tom NelsonExecutive Director Board Chair

project Fit (Families integrating together)
When families engage in outdoor programs
together, they have an opportunity to build
relationships, improve communication skills,
and develop shared values. WI provided
training, equipment, and support for 329
people participating in multi-day family
adventures last year.
urban wilderness Canoe adventures (uwCa)
A partnership between WI, the National Park
Service, the Mississippi River Fund, and other
partners, the UWCA is designed to connect
urban youth and families to the amazing outdoor
activities right in their own backyard. Last year,
WI introduced 13,114 people to local waterways
from the Mississippi to the Harlem River
(see page 4 for more information).

solving skills, strengthen communication, and

for diversity. In 2012, WI shared integrated
outdoor adventures with 2,486 people.
Gateway to adventure
Gateway to Adventure is an innovative program
that empowers people with intellectual
disabilities to develop skills to enjoy outdoor
adventure experiences and integrate into
community activities. Last year, 240 Gateway
participants joined WI on multi-day adventures
(see page 5 for more information).
outdoor skills workshops
WI introduces thousands of people to outdoor
activities through workshops at local festivals
such as May Day Celebration, Dragon Festival
and the Aquatennial Beach Bash. By leveraging
community partnerships and events, WI offered
these no-cost introductory activities to 4,139
participants last year.
† Service by program numbers total more than the
total number of people served because there is
some crossover in program participation.
In 2012, WI provided integrated programming that served 16,345 people on 334 inclusive outdoor events. WI is committed
to sharing the outdoors with traditionally underserved populations through the following program areas:

uwCa provides outdoor learning for 13,000+ urban youth
on the Mississippi river
In partnership with the National Park Service, The Mississippi River Fund, Minneapolis
and Saint Paul Public Schools, WI introduced over 8,000 urban youth and families to
our national treasure, the Mississippi River. With support from the Environmental Trust
Fund, we will expand beyond the Twin Cities to serve youth in Grand Rapids, Saint
Cloud, Hastings and Red Wing in 2013. Major funding for the UWCA was provided by the
Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund as recommended
by the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR).
Minds and bodies are engaged as students learn about
species in the Mississippi River as part of the UWCA program.
Canoemobile expands uwCa Model to seven Cities across the u.s.
WI’s Canoemobile, a national demonstration of our successful UWCA program,
brought six Voyageur canoes and introductory paddling experiences to over 1,500
urban youth and families on local waterways in Milwaukee, Chicago, Michigan City,
Cincinnati, Louisville, New York and Washington, D.C in 2012. This is part of WI’s
long-term vision to reach 200,000 youth through hands-on outdoor experiences
on local waterways in 20 major cities by 2020.
Everyone loved paddling with Chad (pictured right). Here he is celebrating
with a woman who paddled for the first time on the Harlem River in the Bronx last October.
adventures provide Healing for Military Veterans
With funding from the Sierra Club’s Military Families Outdoors program, WI provided
five veterans training trips designed to build on active duty and military veterans’ leadership experience and promote lifelong outdoor recreation skills as part of
WI’s Share the Adventure program.
“This program helped me remember who I am (or was) and reconnect with the
outdoors, which I haven’t done for a long time,” said Tim, age 39, and a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Veterans explored the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, Yellowstone National Park and the Florida Everglades 10,000 Islands with WI last year.
Completed Kayak Corral at little sand Bay Basecamp
With the help of the WM Foundation and the Pohlad Family Foundation, we launched
Phase II of the project and completed construction of our “Kayak Corral.” Having this facility allowed us to move our entire sea kayaking operation to Little Sand Bay,
streamlining our operations and eliminating the need to drive big rigs to and from
the Twin Cities between trips.

Gateway to adventure program serves individuals with Cognitive disabilities
WI successfully completed a two-year Gateway to Adventure program grant from
the May and Stanley Smith Charitable Trust. Gateway is designed to improve
socialization, independence, community integration, and pre-vocational and
vocational skills among participants with intellectual disabilities through training
workshops and extended trips. In 2012, WI served 329 individuals with intellectual
disabilities through this program.
Gateway program participants learn fun and challenging outdoor
skills like how to ski and build a quinzee or snow shelter.
second annual Great river race a big success
The Great River Race benefits the Urban Wilderness Canoe Adventures (UWCA) program, a creative outdoor education initiative that works to reduce the
achievement gap in partnership with public schools and youth serving
organizations by providing enriching nature-based learning to more than
10,000 students each year. Each team races on behalf of a local school
in an effort to win that school a $5,000 UWCA scholarship. Corporations,
local government agencies, colleges, and nonprofit organizations sponsored paddling teams: 20 sponsors 200 paddlers $60,000 + raised.
Corporate teams paddle hard to provide outdoor
learning experiences for local students in the UWCA.
u.s. secretary of the interior Ken salazar recognizes uwCa
U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and Governor Mark Dayton
were hosted by the National Park Service, the Mississippi River Fund,
and Wilderness Inquiry on a tour of the Mississippi National River
and Recreation Area in August. Secretary Salazar recognized the UWCA
as a national leader in connecting urban audiences to the outdoors.
Pictured from left, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, WI Program Manager
Josh Garubanda, and Governor Mark Dayton discuss the benefits of connecting youth to the outdoors through programs like the UWCA.
signed Memorandum of understanding with Federal land Management agencies
Wilderness Inquiry renewed its partnership agreement with the National Forest
Service, Bureau of Land Management, The National Park Service, the U.S. Fish
and Wildlife Service, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This Memorandum
of Understanding (MOU) will help facilitate development of joint programs
to increase outdoor recreation opportunities for people of all abilities
and cultural backgrounds, and providing opportunities for recreation,
service, and careers related to America’s Great Outdoors.
WI and Forest Service staff sign a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly

[ Financial summary ]
2012 was another sound financial year for Wilderness Inquiry. Program and contributed revenues were comparable to 2011, which is good news considering that 2011 was our best financial year ever. In addition to strong and stable contributions and earned revenues, the completion of our Little Sand Bay “kayak corral” will support our mission for years to come. WI’s financial position continues to be stable as it enters its 35th year. Our audited financial statements as of December 31st, 2012 were prepared by Carpenter, Evert & Associates Certified Public Accountants.
