Highlights

Geological history and Evolution of Batanes Islands

This research project is a collaborative undertaking between the Batanes Historical Foundation Inc., the Batanes Congressional Office and the

National Museum. The purpose of the research is to gather geological data to establish the geological history of the province. The result will be

used as additional information that may be included in the dossier for the province’s bid for inclusion in the UNESCO Heritage List.

The focus of this year’s geological study is the island of Sabtang. It is the third largest island in the Batanes Group and one of the least studied

island that composed Batanes. Field collection of rock, fossils and other geologic data were completed.About 262 fossils and rock samples were

collected.

A Study of Ammonite Fossils from Mindoro

The study is a collaborative project between the National Museum of the Philippines and the National Museum of Science and Nature (NMSN),

Tokyo Japan. The objectives of study are: to collect different species of fossil ammonites to determine the exact age of the area and

environment of deposition. Aside from ammonites the group also collected belemnites sp, turritella sp and bivalve shells. Mindoro is one of the

few islands in the Philippines with Jurassic rock exposures.

I. RESEARCHES/PROJECTS

1. Evolution of Batanes Group of Islands, Batanes Province

Field work was conducted on Nov. 17- Dec. 7, 2012

Objective: To reconstruct the geologic history and evolution of Batanes Group of Islands.

Field Activities: Rocks and fossil specimen collection; mapping and describing of different lithologies; and plotting of different geologic

structures.

Laboratory activities: fossils and rocks identification, pebbles and grain size analysis.

Status: Construction of geologic map of Sabtang Island and identification of rocksand fossils are 30 % completed.

Collection :262 rock and fossil specimens were collected

2. A Study of ammonites from Mindoro

This project is in conjunction with the diversity of past plant and animal life in the

Philippines

Objectives: To collect and identify the different species of ammonites and other fossils in the area. To determine the age of these

fossils and to establish its environment of deposition.

Laboratory Activities: Identification/ classification Specimen collection; documentation

Status : Documentation: Classification/identifications are completed

Collection: More than 75 specimens consisting of Jurassic fossils and rocks.

3. Fossil collection building (Diversity of Past Life Project)

This project aims to establish an inventory of past plant and animal life in the Philippines.Fieldwork was conducted in the months of May,

June and October in Ilocos Norte; La Union; Cagayan Valley and Bohol.

Objective: This project aims to collect as many fossil specimens and; to identify and know the possible age as well as the type of

environment where they were deposited.

Field activities: Collection of specimen, plotting of collection site on the map.

Laboratory activities: identification of specimens, documentation and possible age determination.

Status: identification and documentation is on-going

Collection: 612 specimens were collected during field work

4. A Study of Century Old Stone Arc h Bridges of Tayabas, Quezon

Objectives: To identify the different types of rock used in the construction of stone arch bridges and,To identify the source of the materials

used in the construction

Field Activities: Collection of additional field data needed to complete the analysis.

Laboratory activities: Analysis of data. .

Status: Identification and analysis of rock samples were completed.Manuscript is ready for publication

5. Workshop on Basic Earth Science and Basic Astronomy

This project is in collaboration between Geology Division and the Planetarium Division of the National Museum. The workshop is being held

every summer vacation. Some topics being discuss during the workshop are methods of rock and mineral identification, prehistoric life,

natural calamities and maintenance of geological collection.

Objective: To serve as refresher course for earth science teachers

Activities: Lectures and workshop on rock identification, maintenance and fossil restoration

Result : Twenty one (21) science teacher participants from Marikina, Manila,

Mandaluyong Pasay and Quezon City had completed the training workshop.

COLLECTION MANAGEMENT: Creation of a General File Structure of the Anthropology Division’s Collection

The Anthropology Division has Catalogue Number/Accession File, Loan File, Exhibition File, and Location File of the approximately 9,500

ethnographic materials from 50 ethnolinguistic groups. The files that will be included for the general file structure are: Object Catalogue File,

Provenance File, Photograph/Negative/ Slide File, Condition File. Conservation File, Research File, Collector’s File and Data of Collection File.

RESEARCH(Fieldwork) Mulanay, Quezon (March 27-30, 2012)

Conducted ocular inspection, attended meeting and coordinate with Mulanay Mayor and local tourism officers for cultural mapping in the area;

and gather preliminary data on Mulanay heritage resources. (Cyril Santos)

Kabayan Branch Museum, Benguet (November 30 – December 7, 2012)

Researchers from the Anthropology Division inventoried the 95 accessioned and catalogued Ibaloi ethnographic materials exhibited at the

Kabayan Branch Museum; accessioned, described, measured, and assessed the condition of 25 ethnographic objects not included in the 2009

Kabayan Branch Museum Catalogue of the Anthropology Division; photo-documented the 117 ethnographic collections to be exhibited and

stored at the Kabayan Branch Museum; cross-checked the local term, function, materials used, and provenance and assessed the present

condition of the 117 specimens, accessioned, measured, photo-documented, and filed the 65 pieces dismantled photos (laminated, framed, and

mounted on wood), maps (framed and mounted on wood), texts, and illustrations (on cardboard with plastic cover); conducted mechanical

cleaning and treatment of the collection; selected ethnographic materials to be exhibited; wrapped objects to be stored; and prepared the texts,

Timbac, Kabayan, Benguet (March 12-19, 2012)

A team composed of researchers and technicians from the Anthropology and Archeology Divisions whose output during the 7-day fieldwork

were; site map, illustration of the types of coffins; position of the mummies , and present arrangement of the coffins in rock shelters 1 and 2;

inventory of coffins, human mummies an skeletal remains, age estimation and identification of the probable sex of human mummies and crania;

noted the presence and location of the tattoos on mummies; observed pathological conditions on the cranial and postcranial remains and

cultural modifications on the dentition of some of the crania; and photo-documentation of the coffins, mummies, skeletal remains and

The lecture focuses on Exhibit Planning and Designing. Museum workers need to be aware of the basic techniques of good exhibit production,

but also to understand the needs and behavior of museum visitors. Adopts techniques and standards of presentation that will communicate with

the visitor and evoke desirable responses.The effectiveness of an exhibit can be enhanced often to a dramatic degree, play to the four sense –

It talked about the evolution, rather the history of the trend of Pinya weaving and fashion since it was practiced and originated in Aklan,

Panay. Pinya cloth is distinctive to central Philippines and due to its expensive price, only the elites were able to wear ones. Nowadays,

ARCHAEOLOGY Highlights

The year 2012 was another productive year for the staff of the Archaeology Division, wherein they have accomplished several archaeological and

museological undertakings. Research activities in the field have generated interesting and significant results that would greatly contribute to our

growing understanding of the archaeology, prehistory, and cultural heritage of the Philippines. Collaborations with local and foreign institutions

and organizations have been fostered in these research endeavors for a better cooperation towards the development of archaeological

research, as well as for the promotion and preservation of our nation’s rich cultural and archaeological heritage.

TERRESTRIAL AND UNDERWATER ARCHAEOLOGY

Field Investigations

The following are the list of the field sites that has been systematically studied, explored and excavated by the research team of the Archaeology

Division in different locations of the country:

Kabayan Mummies Research in Timbac Rockshelters, Kabayan, Benguet

As part of the NCCA Kabayan Mummy Project, a team from the Archaeology Division conducted assessment, documentation and recording of

mummified remains from Timbac rockshelters 1 and 2 as part of the conservation efforts in the preservation and safeguarding of the burial

rockshelter sites that contained mummies in wooden coffins. Two field seasons (30 January to 6 February and 12 to 19 March) were devoted in

this research activity. The initial work involved the identification of the wooden coffins present in the sites and their types and the assessment of

the condition of the mummified human remains in each coffin. This is then followed by systematic recording and documentation as

measurement of the coffins, physical analyses of individual mummies, recording of any associated materials with the remains, and mapping of

the burial site. The assessment work revealed the deteriorating state of the mummies, which required immediate conservation treatment.

Cleaning should be done in all the coffins as it may contribute to further deterioration of the mummy remains. In addition, associated materials

such as textiles required conservation as well.

Investigation of a Reported Shipwreck Site in RoxasCity, Capiz

Last 24 to 28 February, a team from the Underwater Archaeology section investigated a shipwreck off coast Barangay Culasi in RoxasCity, after

reports of ceramics being recovered from the wreck site. The investigation dive confirmed presence of archaeological materials such as ship

remains, porcelain ceramics, stoneware jars, and a mound of assorted ceramics and metal. However, it was also revealed that the wreck site was

heavily looted, since no intact ceramics were found. The ship remains include bulkheads, indicative of a typical Chinese shipbuilding feature,

which are then measured. Preliminary analyses of the ceramics found placed the date of the wreck site probably around early 19th

century,

although this is still inconclusive. The confirmation of the presence of a shipwreck site off coast Roxas city would definitely require further

research. Its location can also serve as a training ground for maritime archaeology field exercises. Lastly the ship can be viewed as a tool for

tourism, which needs further protection of the wreck site.

2012 Scarborough Shoal Underwater Archaeological Project

On the fourth season of the Scarborough Underwater Archaeological Project, a team from the Underwater Archaeological section in

collaboration with the Far Eastern Foundation for Nautical Archaeology carried out for this year another underwater archaeological excavation

of wreck site Scarborough Shoal. The project was originally scheduled from 26 March to 8 May but due to the rising tension between the

Philippines and China regarding the territorial ownership of the Scarborough Shoal the project was prematurely terminated. The project’s aim

for this year is the excavation of SS4 site, which was discovered in 2011. The preliminary target of the investigation was the significant magnetic

anomaly that could be part of the ship cargo as well as the area where surface collection of ceramics were recovered. The initial archaeological

investigation revealed the presence of a granite stone that is possibly part of an anchor, ceramics, and metal objects; confirming the area as an

underwater archaeological site. Nine excavation squares were opened in which it further yielded archaeological materials such as celadon bowls,

dishes, globular jars and vases, stoneware jars, metal rings, Chinese coins, bronze gongs, unidentified metal concretions and granite anchors.

Archaeological Excavation of Butuan Boats in Brgy. Libertad, ButuanCity

In a continuing project ‘Reviving the Legacy of Butuan Boats’, the National Museum with the grant received from the National Commission for

Culture and the Arts set off another archaeological undertaking in Barangay Libertad in Butuan City to excavate previously identified wooden

boats. From May to June, teams from the Archaeology Division were sent to Butuan to conduct archaeological survey and excavation. Two

Butuan boats were partially exposed, revealing the keel planks and their details. The first boat contained a lug on the keel plank carved as one

long straight protrusion. The second boat on the other hand has no lugs. Kaong fibers or cabo negro were also recovered from the site. The

excavation site were not closed for public viewing upon the request of the City Government of Butuan, who is also an active partner of the

NationalMuseum cultural projects. The public can still view the boats upom coordination with the Local Government Unit.

The 2012 Bacong Archaeological Project

On the third phase of the Bacong Archaeolological Project, the team from the Archaeology Division conducted another systematic excavation

and exploration in Barangay Magsuhot and vicinities in Bacong, Negros Oriental in search of further evidence of Metal Age communities. From

May to June, the team excavated the Yucor Property site situated uphill of the barangay. Two 2m x 2m excavation squares were opened

revealing several pottery assemblages with associated iron implements. Despite the richness of earthenware pottery vessels in the site, no burial

jars were found associated with it, which strengthened the assumption that the area may have been used as a ritual site during the Metal Age.

This was further supported by the presence of iron implements with unique morphology, which seemed to have been intentionally placed and

arranged in the site with the pottery vessels.

Aside from the systematic excavations in Brgy. Magsuhot, the team also conducted explorations and few test excavations in 50 possible sites in

other barangays in Bacong; identified for presence of archaeological materials indicative of early habitation and settlement. One of the sites

surveyed and test excavated is in Barangay Balayagmanok in which it revealed palaeosol deposits beneath the pyroclastic layer. No artifacts

however were recovered from the palaesol layer although it has been suspected that the said layer might be evidence of an ancient mangrove or

organic deposit.The significant results of the archaeological undertakings in Bacong for this year would therefore require further investigation of

the area and would recommend a more extensive and comprehensive archaeological excavations.

Material Analysis and Other Related Activities

Archaeometry and Restoration of the Earthenware Vessels from Brgy. Magsuhot, Bacong, Negros Oriental

The three seasons (2009 to 2011) of systematic excavations and explorations in the municipality of Bacong, Negros Oriental resulted to the

recovery of rich assemblages of earthenware burial jars and pottery vessels, particularly in Barangay Magsuhot. These excavated materials were

properly cleaned, inventoried, accessioned, labelled, bagged, and stored. For the 2012 season a team from the Archaeology Division conducted

artifact analysis and restoration of potteries recovered from he said site. This is also an offshoot from the 6.8 magnitude earthquake that

happened in the whole island of Negros Oriental last 6 February. From 13 to 26 March, the team assessed the status of the artifacts securely

stored at the Barangay Hall of Magsuhot and at the Municipality Hall of Bacong after the February 2012 earthquake and the December 2011

flooding in the area, conducted metrical and morphological analysis of earthenware potteries for a much defined typology of these artifacts,

restored the restorable vessels, recorded the materials through photo documentation and scientific illustration, and encoded the data from the

archaeometric analysis using a database program.

A total of 41 vessels were analyzed, classified into presentation dishes or footed vessels, incense burner, globular pots, angular pots, ovaloid

pots and bowls. The pots were evidently low fired with some having traces of red slipping. The data from the archaeometric analysis are

encoded in a developed database file from Microsoft Access program. The scientific illustration and restoration on the other hand are

simultaneously done. The restoration of pottery used materials such as castone, plaster of paris, marine epoxy, and glue. After the restoration,

each artifacts were packed in bubble wraps and net bags with proper labels before storing them in plastic crates covered with bubble wraps and

foam to cushion each vessel, preventing it from further breakage.

Reconstruction and Reproduction of the Earthenware Coffin Excavated in Brgy. Magsuhot, Bacong, Negros Oriental

The reconstruction and restoration process of the earthenware coffin excavated in Brgy. Magsuhot, Bacong, Negros Oriental last April 2010 has

actually started in September of the same year; and this year it has finally reached its full restored form. The long and tedious process of

assembling together the hundreds of pieces of earthenware sherds was complicated by the eroded condition of the sherds and the missing

significant parts of the artifact. The initial stages of reconstruction was single-handedly performed by Senior Technician Jonathan Jacar. Realizing

the bulk of the task, a four-man team was formed to accomplish the task. Activities of the reconstruction and restoration involved sorting and

identification of sherds whether they belonged to the body of the coffin or the cover, cleaning and drying of some sherds, fitting and bonding of

the pieces (initially with strong adhesive such as Mighty Bond instant glue then eventually with marine epoxy), restoration of missing parts, final

retouch of fitted or bonded parts, and filling up of the cracks.

After the completion of the its restoration, a production of its replica was then performed, which started on 16 September and finished in 30

October. The creation of its mold utilized silicon rubber, hardeners, resin, woven mat, nuts and bolts and calsomine. The making of the mold

entailed careful planning of the right mixture of the materials for the desired thickness and elasticity. The material for making the replica is

castone and Plaster of Paris.

ARCHAEOLOGY RECORDS SECTION

Progress Report on the Database Management

This report summarizes the computerization activities undertaken at the Records Section of the Archaeology division. Records available

comprised of archaeological field report, specimen inventory record, manuscript, topographic maps, photo files composed of slides, contact

prints and black and white prints and publications.

The following are the activities carried out at the Records Section:

1. An update of database program from version 2.2 to version 3.5 had been carried out. This means that 120 % database application had

been upgraded, that shows a more improved user interface, better accessibility and advanced on overall functions.

2. The use of the newly acquired computer unit designed to connect (5) computers at the Records section for the data base management.

This system is essential in monitoring and maintaining a database application that could easily communicate or connect various records

using a common system or database switchboard. The presence of the network system enhanced the speed accessing files.

This records database Switchboard is accessed by the six (6) computers working simultaneously on different records. Displayed in this

switchboard are the various types of archaeological records that require the digitization, i.e. Field Report Data Display, Manuscript

Inventory Data Display, Maps Data Entry Form, Sitelist Data Display, Site Remark, Photofile Data Display, and Slide File Data Display.

The scanning of Archaeological Specimen Inventory Records (ASIR), Filed Reports and slides has been prioritized in the digitization

primarily because of its importance to the researchers and the present physical condition of the document that need to be preserved.

3. The ASIR has been arranged according to Regions I to XIII (following the old system of region classification). A total of 16,985 pages of

ASIR from Region I to X representing 56.9 % of the total ASIR (Archaeological Specimens Inventory Record) with 1,309 folders or records

has been linked using the network linking system. In the process the ASIR data is linked to the database of Site List Display or vice versa

and eventually will be linked to the Field Report Data Display.

In sync with the scanning of ASIR and Field Reports, 1030 or 8% slides were also scanned and properly maintained at the Records

Section.

4. Simultaneous with the scanning and network linking, cataloguing or indexing of filed reports is also carried out at the Records Section.

Archaeological Field Reports refers to the reports submitted by Researchers to the Records Section after conducting archaeological

research anywhere in the Philippines. Cataloguing or indexing of field reports includes entry of annotated bibliography, subject

classification, author, location etc. Field Report Display Data contained 1,193 files or 97.5% of field reports with total number of 13,399

scanned pages.

5. Manuscripts are articles on general topics, such as archaeology, anthropology, geology, zoology, botany, underwater archaeology etc.

that has been submitted to the Records Section. Manuscripts were also catalogued or indexed which includes entry of annotated

bibliography, subject, classification, author, location etc. The database of entered manuscripts is found in the Manuscript Inventory

Data Display that contains 1475 files or 85% of the total manuscripts filed at the Records Section.

6. All the documents that were scanned and inventoried were properly maintained both physically and in a database application. The

physical maintenance involves cataloguing, labeling and sometimes segregation of folders that contains two different reports and most

of the times separating the duplicate or triplicate copies for a single document.

The digitization project undertaken at the Records Section of the Archaeology Division has been going on smoothly and effectively. At present

the Records Section is trying to establish a database system that would track the physical movement of the archeological documents. This refers

to the in-coming and out-going of archaeological records. This type of database system could easily trace the whereabouts of the archeological

records. In the future we could assign standard codes on each document that would correspond to the artifacts referred to the Specimen

Inventory Records.

ZOOARCHAEOLOGY SECTION

For 2012, the Zooarchaeology Section had been continuing the identification of faunal and human remains and retrieval of Zooarchaeological

materials from different archaeological sites. Maintenance of reference collection and transfer of collections to the permanent visual storage

room was one of the main accomplishments of Researchers and Technicians of Zooarchaeology section.

As part of maintaining the collections the following are the accomplished activities:

1. Measurement of the volume of records of the Zooarchaeology Section (as per

Memo requirements from the National Archives)

2. Encoding and updating of reference collection

3. Identification and re-bagging of faunal and human remains

4. Supervised the transfer of Zooarchaeological collections from previous storage rooms to the newly constructed living storage

COLLECTIONS HOLDING SECTION

The task of the Collections Holdings Section (CHS) is the maintenance of Archaeology Division Collections which comprise the cultural heritage of

the country is accomplished as a routine curatorial/museological work.

The maintenance of the various cultural/archaeological collections involved the general cleaning/washing, sorting, identifying, classifying,

accessioning, re-inventory, recording, putting of labels and bagging. Also involved are the basic restoration work and photo documentation,

construction of wooden pedestals for the large jars kept in the storage and the setting up double metal rack inside the four archaeology visual

storage rooms where hundreds of the plastic crates that contain various archaeological artifacts were distributed.

Personnel of the Collections Holdings Section were also involved in the transfer/hauling of Archaeology Division collections to the recently

refurbished Archaeology visual storage at the ground floor of the National Art Gallery Building (NAG).

1. Former Archaeology storage beside the Museum Garage where the Beyer’s collection, Intramuros Archaeological specimens, and a large

amount of underwater archaeolology ceramics sherd collection were temporarily kept.

2. Former Archaeology storage beside the Civil Service district office where early collections of cultural/archaeological artifact were

likewise temporarily kept.

3. Former Ceramic Room at the 3rd

floor of the OldCongressBuilding where some of the national cultural collections and important

cultural/archaeological artifacts as well as the local pottery collections which were mainly specimens from Batangas and Laguna

archaeological sites were kept.

ARTS EXHIBITION SUPPORT

NAG Rehabilitation and New Exhibits

The galleries and exhibits at the National Art Gallery (NAG) located at the second and third floors of the National Museum at the Old

Legislative Building in Padre Burgos St., Manila was temporarily closed to the public from August 13 to September 30, 2012.

According to Dir. Jeremy R. Barns, CESO III, the closure shall pave the way for the “completion of improvements and renovations to

the gallery floors and public spaces of the building, as well as the rehanging of the art collections throughout the completed

galleries.” In support of the management’s curatorial direction, the Arts Division was able to prepare the artworks intended for

exhibition in the rehabilitated halls of the National Art Gallery (NAG). Specifically, artworks intended for exhibition had been

prioritized for preventive conservation in coordination with the Chemistry and Conservation Laboratory Division. A total of 316

artworks from the NM visual art collection were exhibited in seven galleries. The division also assisted in the preparation of

exhibition materials such as captions and labels.

COLLECTION MANAGEMENT

Collections

Total No. of Artworks in the Official Inventory (excluding those for accessioning): 1,200

Number of artworks that underwent preventive conservation: 670 pcs.

As the custodian of the NM visual art collection, the Arts Division routinely conducts preventive conservation procedures on

artworks and maintenance of the art storage areas. Exhibition halls and galleries were likewise inspected and instances of

deterioration of artworks were brought to the attention of the management and the Chemistry and Conservation Laboratory

Division. Moreover, movement of artworks from storage areas and exhibitions halls was also supervised by staff of the division.

Digitization

More than 1,000 artworks of the National Museum had undergone digitization starting April 2012. Professional photographer

Benigno “Bengy” Toda III volunteered his services to photograph the collection.

With the Arts Division at the lead, necessary documents and permits were prepared. The high-resolution images would form part of

the proposed Digital Photo Library that could be used for future publications and cataloguing of the collection. Since the work

involved the movement of artworks and unframing/reframing, the Chemistry and Conservation Laboratory Division assured that

proper conservation procedures were followed.Aside from the NM collection, the GSIS Collection that was turned over to the

National Museum was also photographed.

Artworks Retrieved

The staff of the NM-Arts Division was able to retrieved three artworks from the Department of Education (Central Office, Pasig City)

on May 23, 2012. The retrieval was coordinated with the DepEd’s Administrative Service unit and in line with the Division’s efforts to

reclaim NM artworks loaned to other government agencies. The artworks were loaned to the DepEd during the term of former Arts

Div. Curator Lucila Atacador-Salazar in the 1970s. Despite the unavailability of documentary reference stating the loan, formal

Memorandum Receipt was only acknowledged in 1996. The retrieved artworks are “Magkano Ho Ang Isang Niyog” (1977) by

Federico Estrada, “Progress in Education” (1963) by Simon Saulog, and “Itikan” (1982) by Rodolfo Roa.

EXTENSION SERVICES

CCP exhibit on martial rule recollection

On July 14, 2012, the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) opened ReCOLLECTION 1081: CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER (Visual

Dissent and Martial Rule). The National Museum of the Philippines expresses its support to this cultural undertaking by loaning the

painting “Justice Under Martial Law” (1980) by Orlando Castillo.

The central figure in Castillo’s painting depicts former Pres. Ferdinand Marcos, somewhat shriveled and draped with the American

flag. His right arm is raised, holds a mallet in the left hand, and light shines in his head. On the monochromatic background are

scenes that evoke military abuses, rise of insurgency, curtailment of protests, and poverty. The artwork is typical of the social realism

movement of the period.

Artworks for SONA

As part of the preparation for President Benigno Simeon S. Aquino’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) on July 23, 2012 at the

House of Representatives (HOR) in Batasan Complex, Quezon City, the Arts Division coordinated with the Presidential Legislative

Liaison’s Office (PLLO). Specifically, seven artworks from the NM visual arts collection were loaned to the PLLO office at the HOR. The

artworks featured indigenous themes.

Student Assistance

In cooperation with the Museum Education Division, the Arts Division hosted several on-the-job student trainees from the University

of the Philippines-Manila, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, and FEATI University. Moreover, the database and art books

were also opened to students who researched on Philippine art and culture.

CULTURAL PROPERTIES DIVISION Cultural Properties are priceless and exceptional assets and should be protected for the present and future generations of Filipinos.

Hence the national government has passed laws for the preservation and protection of these cultural properties to unify all Filipinos

with a deep sense of pride in their common identity, cultural heritage and national patrimony; and imbibe with the spirit of

nationalism and strong commitment to the protection and dissemination of legacy.

At the national level, the task of preserving and protecting natural and cultural properties has been assigned to the Cultural

Properties Division (CPD) of the National Museum of the Philippines (NMP) established by virtue of Republic Act 4846 as amended

by Presidential Decree 374 (Cultural Properties Preservation and Protection Act) on January 10, 1974. Since 1974, the CPD has been

involved in law enforcement; registration of cultural properties; issuance of licenses, certificates and permits; surveillance;

information dissemination; development of heritage sites; and research.

The National Cultural Treasures and Important Cultural Properties of the

CHEMISTRY AND CONSERVATION LABORATORY

The Chemistry and Conservation Laboratory Division underlined and directed on the Conservation and Restoration of Art Collection,

Ethnographic and Archaeological Collections. Preservation of colonial Churches of the Philippines declared as National Cultural Treasures and

Conservation of Archaeological Site/materials were also conducted.

Summary of Accomplishments:

A. Conservation of Art Collection

For movable collections, the Isabelo Tampingco sculpture underwent preservation treatment prior to its exhibition. Lifesize portrait of Speaker

Jose Laurel Sr. by Fernando Amorsolo were restored and the Mananasala and Alcuaz painting for GSIS Collections were likewise conserved and

restored for the National Museum – GSIS Project. Restoration of the portrait of Fr. Miguel Garcia de Esteban by Juan Arceo. The painting was

returned to Arsobispado de Nueva Segovia, Ilocos Norte after restoration.

B. Conservation of Colonial Churches

The completion of the restoration of two (2) side altars of San Isidro Labrador Church in Lazi, Siquijor and Archway of San Andres in

Masinloc, Zambales. Conservation funds for these projects were sourced out from US Embassy and NCCA.

C. Archaeological Objects

Another on-site preservation, is the conservation and restoration of the Modern Day Balanghay – Diwata ng Lahi. Deteriorated portions

were repaired consolidated and the boat was coated with sealant to retard deterioration. This conservation is funded by NCCA.

D. Conservation of Archaeological Site

On-going preservation and site development of Kabayan Mummy Caves, where constant monitoring on the condition of the caves and

the mummies against the effect of fluctuating environmental parameters and global warming.

RESTORATION AND ENGINEERING A. Architectural Conservation, Restoration andDesign Services (Design Development and Contract Document Phase)

1. Old Legislative Building: Enhancement of the NM-NAG Common Areas and Storages/Laboratories.The Division prepared the as-built

plans, documentation and developed the architectural design (Architects Arnulfo F. Dado and Geraldine Uy) for the NM-NAG Common

Areas and Storages/Laboratories such as the South Annex Building, North Annex Building, East Annex Building, West Lobby G/F and

Scenic Elevators. The Division completed schematic plans: (i) 4 schemes for the proposed auditorium at the North Annex; (ii) 5 schemes

for the proposed Administrative Division Office at the South Annex; (iii) East Annex Building, (iv) West Lobby G/F; (v) Laurel Hall; (vi)

Scenic Elevators and (vii) Ground Floor Laboratories. The Project has an estimated probable cost of P71,253,283.35. The Division

engaged the services of contractual draftspersons (M. Samarita, J.P. Sia, M.G. Saguimo and E. Olaso) for a total of 1156.89 man-hours

(14 August – 13 December, 2012).

2. Old Legislative Building: Site Development of the NAG/MFP Grounds. The Division prepared the as-built plans, documentation and

developed the architectural design (Architects Arnulfo F. Dado and Nelson Aquino) for the site development of the NAG and MFP

grounds. The Division completed schematic plans: (i) NAG grounds site development plan; (ii) MFP ground site development; (iii) South

Annex Green Roof; and (iv) North Annex Green Roof. The Project has an estimated probable cost of P46,423,130.00. The Division

engaged the services of contractual draftspersons (R. Samarita, E. Olaso, J.P. Sia and M.G. Saguimo) for a total of 858.09 man-hours (13

August – 21 December, 2012).

3. Old Legislative Building: Continuation of the Renovation of Eight (8) Galleries/Rooms. The Division completed the architectural contract

document phase of the Project based on the architectural design and plans prepared by Architect Augusto Villalon which involved the

renovation of 8 galleries/rooms. The Project has an approved budget for the contract (ABC of 24 Feb 2012) of P22,472,115.58 for the

renovation of 1958.48 square meters of museum building space. The Division engaged the services of a contractual draftsperson (E.R.

Cruz) for a total of 188.75 man-hours (7 February to 8 March 2012).

4. Old Legislative Building: Preservation of Senate Session Hall. The Division prepared and developed the architectural design, and

completed the contract document phase of the Project (with Architect Arnulfo F. Dado as Architect-of-Record, and Architect Evelyn I.

Esguerra as Architect-in-Charge-of-Construction) which involved the preservation of the Senate Session Hall. The Project involves the

architectural interior refinishing, design and build for electrical and mechanical system of a museum building space. The Division

engaged the services of contractual draftspersons (A.C. Gatus and R.M. Samarita) for a total of 114 man-hours (12 March to 13 April

2012; and 24-25 July 2012). The Project’s procurement phase (c/o NM BAC) was concluded with an award of a contract on 20 June 2012

to building contractor (401 Development & Construction) in the amount of P9,124,062.14 for 90 calendar days.

5. Old Legislative Building: Refurbishing of Toilets at 2nd

, 3rd

and 4th

Floors West Side. The Division prepared and developed the

architectural design. The Division engaged contractual draftspersons (R. Samarita & R.A. Francia) for a total of 104 man-hours (25 June

to 27 July, 2012). The Division completed the contract documents phase as Variation Work of the Session Hall Project.

6. Old Legislative Building: Renovation of 4F Lobby and Female Toilets. The Division prepared and completed the contract document phase

of the Project with an approved budget for the contract of P507,721.65 to be implemented in 30 calendar days. The Project involve the

refinishing of the 4/F and 3/F female toilets with a total area of 64.85 square meters; and refinishing of doors/wood panels at Roxas Hall.

Obligation Slip signed (P333,826.24 dated 1 Oct; and P50,121,09 dated 18 Dec). The Project’s procurement phase (c/o NMBAC) was

concluded with an award of a Negotiated Contract with the 401 Development & Construction in the amount of P497,567.22 for 30

calendar days.

7. Old Legislative Building: SPPC Hall (2011 Donated Fund). The Division completed the architectural contract document phase of the

Project based on the architectural design and plans prepared by Architect Augusto Villalon which involved the refurbishing of 1

gallery/room (Gallery XI) with a total area of 123.48 square meters. The Division engaged the services of a contractual draftsperson (R.

Samarita) for a total of 16 man-hours (30-31 May 2012). The Project has an approved budget for the contract of P1,745,339.15 to be

implemented in 30 calendar days.

8. Old Legislative Building: Renovation of Rm #214 or The Security Bank Hall (2011 Donated Fund). The Division completed the

architectural contract document phase of the Project based on the architectural design and plans prepared by Architect Augusto Villalon

which involved the retrofit/refinishing of 1 gallery/room with a total area of 237 square meters. The Project has an approved budget for

the contract of P3,281,493.42 to be implemented in 30 calendar days. The negotiated procurement (c/o NMBAC) was concluded with an

award of a Negotiated Contract to a building contractor (401 Development & Construction) in the amount of P 3,157,016.17 for 30

calendar days.

9. Old Finance Building: The Division prepared and developed the architectural design, documentation, and completed the contract

document phase of the Project (with Architect Arnulfo F. Dado as Architect-of-Record, and Architect Evelyn I. Esguerra as Architect-in-

Charge-of-Construction) which involve the restoration and conversion of 2150.63 square meters of museum building space. The Project

has an approved budget for the contract of P4,840,965.16 and to be implemented in 90 calendar days. The Division engaged the

services of contractual draftspersons (R. Samarita and R.A. Jao Francia) for a total of 48 man-hours (8-21 March). The Project’s

procurement phase (c/o NM BAC) was concluded with an award of a contract (27 July 2012) to a building contractor (401 Development

& Construction) in the amount of P4,799,618.81 for 90calendar days. Works involve the repair of collections storage, porte cochere, roof

deck and stairs.

10. Retrofit of Padre Burgos House / Vigan Branch Museum (Vigan, Ilocos Sur).The Division prepared and developed the architectural design,

documentation, and completed the contract document phase of the Project (with Architect Arnulfo F. Dado as Architect-of-Record, and

Architect Evelyn I. Esguerra as Architect-in-Charge-of-Construction). The Project involves the restoration of an immovable cultural

property and repair of a museum building with a total floor area of 882.65 square meters. The Project has an approved budget for the

contract of P1,409,629.67 and duration of 120 calendar days. The Division engaged the services of contractual draftspersons (A.C. Gatus

and R.M. Samarita) for a total of 239 man-hours (from 17 February to 29 May, 2012). The Project’s procurement phase (c/o NM BAC)

was concluded with an award of a contract to a building contractor (739 Builders General Constructor) in the amount of P1,409,299.25

for 60calendar days.

11. Retrofit of Fort Pilar / Zamboanga Branch Museum (Zamboanga, Zamboanga Sibugay).The Division prepared and developed the

architectural design, documentation, and completed the contract document phase (with Architect Arnulfo F. Dado as Architect-of-

Record, and Architect Nelson Aquino as Architect-in-Charge-of-Construction) which involved the restoration of an immovable cultural

property and retrofit of 5 structures with a total floor area of 3146.78 square meters. The Division engaged the services of contractual

draftspersons (E.M. Cruz, R.A. Francia and R. Samarita) for a total of 710.57 man-hours (8 March to 31 July 2012 and 1 August to 21

December 2012). The Project has an approved budget for the contract of P6,583,150.10 and a duration 120 calendar days. Works

involve the rehabilitation of five structures with a total area of 3146.78 square meters. Procurement phase was concluded with an

award of a contract (Agreement of 7 December 2012) to a building contractor (FJ Construction & Enterprises) in the amount of

PP6,559,868.48 for 120 calendar days.

12. Retrofit of Butuan Branch Museum (Butuan, Agusan del Norte). The Division prepared and developed the architectural design, and

completed the contract document phase (with Architect Arnulfo F. Dado as Architect-of-Record and Architect Nelson Aquino as

Architect-in-Charge-of-Construction) which involved the retrofit of 669.21 square meters of museum building spaces. The Division

engaged the services of a contractual draftsperson (R. Samarita) for a total of 445.56 man-hours (28 March to 29 August, 2012). The

Project has an approved budget for the contract of P3,446,529.79 and a duration of 120 calendar days. Works involve the rehabilitation

of galleries and associated spaces, construction of toilets and repair of repository structure. Procurement phase was concluded with an

award of a contract (Agreement of 7 December 2012) to a building contractor (SCP Construction) in the amount of P3,419,736.09 and a

duration of 120 calendar days.

13. NM Batanes Extension Office and Research Center (Uyugan, Batanes). The Division prepared and developed the architectural design,

and completed the contract document phase of the Project (with Architect Arnulfo F. Dado as Architect-of-Record, and Architect Nelson

Aquino as Architect-in-Charge-of-Construction) which involved the retrofit and conversion of 825.46 square meters for museum building

spaces. The Project has an approved budget for the contract of P28,842,028.42. The Division engaged the services of contractual

draftspersons (R. Samarita and R.A. Jao Francia) for a total of 440.20 man-hours (15 February to 2 April 2012; and 9 July to 15 August

2012). The Division collaborated with the DPWH Batanes for Project’s procurement and actual implementation phases.

14. Bolinao Branch Museum & Field Station (Bolinao, Pangasinan). The Division (through Architect Evelyn I. Esguerra and Norberto

Tolentino) conducted on-site architectural assessment and building inspection of the museum facilities (15-17 February 2012). The

Division prepared the preliminary architectural design, and engaged contractual draftsperson (A.C. Gatus) for a total of 20 man-hours

(16-20 March 2012).

15. Palawan Branch Museum, Field Station and Visitors’ Facilities (Quezon, Palawan). The Division (through Architect Geraldine Uy)

conducted on-site architectural assessment and building inspections (11-16 April) of the museum facilities. The Division prepared,

developed and completed the preliminary architectural design of the boardwalk and living quarters. The Division engaged a contractual

draftsperson (R. Samarita) for a total of 48 man-hours (27 July to 6 August, 2012).

16. Proposed Conversion of the DOT Building into Natural History Museum Building. The Division completed preliminary project definition

and budget proposal for possible funding by the DBM.

17. Planetarium (Manila). The Division completed preliminary project definition and budget proposal for possible funding by the DBM.

18. National Museum Complex (Manila). The Division completed preliminary project definition and budget proposal for possible funding by

the DBM.

19. National Galleon Museum. The Division (through Architect Nelson Aquino) prepared preliminary architectural design, and engaged a

contractual draftsperson (R.A. Francia) for a total of 32 man-hours (1-7 June 2012).

Built Heritage and Immovable Cultural Properties

20. Capitol Building of the Province of Misamis Occidental (Misamis Occidental). The Division (through Architect Nelson Aquino) conducted

the on-site architectural assessment and building inspection (28-29 February 2012) of the immovable cultural property.

21. Church of San Ildefonso in Tanay (Tanay, Rizal). The Division (through Architect Evelyn I. Esguerra) conducted the on-site architectural

assessment and building inspection (7 March 2012) of an immovable National Cultural Treasure.

22. Church of San Pedro Apostol in (Loboc, Bohol). The Division (through Architect Arnulfo F. Dado) conducted the architectural assessment

and technical review of the Detailed Engineering Studies (prepared by P-Square Associates Co. concerning an immovable National

Cultural Treasure), and transmitted to the NCCA (1 Feb and 10 April).

23. Museo Ning Angeles (Angeles, Pampanga). The Division (through Architect Evelyn I. Esguerra) conducted the on-site architectural

assessment and building inspection (17 April 2012) of the immovable cultural property.

24. Lighthouse of Capul (Capul, Northern Samar). The Division (through Architect Nelson Aquino) conducted the on-site architectural

assessment and building inspection (14-18 May 2012) of the immovable cultural property.

25. Church and Fortress of St. Ignatius of Loyola (Capul, Northern Samar). The Division (through Architect Nelson Aquino) conducted the on-

site architectural assessment and building inspection (14-18 May 2012) of the immovable cultural property.

26. Cape Bojeador Lighthouse in Burgos, Ilocos Norte. The Division (through Architect Arnulfo Dado) conducted the on-site architectural

assessment and building inspection (23-26 July 2012) of an immovable National Cultural Treasure, and prepared the State of

Conservation Report transmitted to National Commission for Culture and the Arts (10 August 2012).

27. Sta. Barbara Church in Sta. Barbara, Iloilo. The Division (through Marcelo Cercado) conducted the on-site architectural assessment and

building inspection (9-12 July 2012) of the immovable cultural property.

28. St. John the Baptist Church in Jimenez, Misamis Occidental. The Division (through Marcelo Cercado) conducted the on-site architectural

assessment and building inspection (15-16 August 2012) of the immovable cultural property.

29. Church of Patrocinio de Maria in Boljoon, Cebu. The Division (through Architect Arnulfo F. Dado) conducted the on-site architectural

assessment and building inspection (22-24 October 2012) of an immovable National Cultural Treasure, and prepared the State of

Conservation Report transmitted to NCCA.

30. Miagao Church World Heritage Site in Miagao, Iloilo. The Division (through Architect Arnulfo F. Dado) conducted the on-site

architectural assessment and building inspection (12-14 December 2012) of a World Cultural Heritage Site.

B. Architectural Conservation/Restoration/Construction Services (Construction Phase)

31. Old Legislative Building: Structural Retrofit of Eight (8) Rooms. The Division continued and completed the supervision of the construction

phase of the Project implemented through a contractor (401 Development & Construction in the amount of P10,520,461.73 for 140

calendars days) in 2011. Works commenced 27 June 2011, and included variation works: (i) Additional Work Order #1 (P533,887.31);

and (ii) Additional Work Oder #2 (P508,127.61). The Project involves the retrofit of columns, girder supports, floors, and electrical

works, while the additional works involves the retrofit of visible storage facilities and construction of a covered walkway. The remaining

30% of all works in the Project was completed on 13 March 2012, and such Project was certified 100% complete and accepted on 23

March 2012.

32. Old Congress Building Grounds: Rehabilitation of the North Inner Courtyards. The Division continued and completed the supervision of

the construction phase of the Project implemented through a contractor (401 Devt. & Construction in the amount of P309,897.50 for 60

calendar days) in 2011. The Project included variation works: (i) Additional Work Order #01 (P28,000.00, for 15 calendar days). The

remaining works in the Project was completed on 17 February 2012, and such Project was certified 100% complete and accepted.

33. Restoration of the architectural precast concrete at the Senate Session Hall and associated spaces. The Division continued and

completed the supervision of the construction phase of the Project implemented through a contractor (House of Precast, Inc. in the

amount of P1,365,008.96 for 135 working days), which commenced 29 October 2011. The project involves the restoration and

reconstruction of decorative concrete (balusters, mouldings, festoons). The Project was about 20% complete on 13 December 2011, and

the remaining 80% was completed on 31 May 2012. The Project is certified 100% complete and accepted on June 2012.

34. Restoration of Pan-ay Church National Cultural Treasure (Roxas, Aklan). The Division continued and completed the supervision of the

construction phase of the Project implemented through a contractor (401 Devt. & Construction in the amount of P956,949.97 for 90

calendar days), which commenced 16 December 2011. The remaining major percentage of the works was completed on 30 March 2012.

The Division conducted on-site building inspections (1-2 February, 2012; and 30-31 March, 2012). The Project is certified 100% complete

and accepted on 1 April 2012.

35. Old Legislative Building: Continuation of Renovation of Eight (8) Galleries/Rooms. The Division (with Architect Evelyn I. Esguerra as

Architect-in-Charge of Construction) completed the supervision of the construction phase of the Project implemented through a

contractor (401 Development & Construction in the amount of P22,509,988.87 for 120 calendar days). The Project commenced on 31

May 2012, and was completed on 10 October 2012 with variation works: Variation Order #01 of P527,565.33; Variation Order #02 of

P908,100.06; Variation Order #02A of P155,018.90; Variation Order #2B of P72,429.76; and Mobilization/demobilization of P441,372,33.

The Project has a Revised Contract Cost of P24,071,631.20 and duration of 140 calendar days. The Project was duly certified and

accepted 100% complete on 10 October 2012. The Certificate of Building Occupancy has yet to be secured and submitted by the

contractor.

36. Old Legislative Building: Completion of the Fire Suppression System. The Division (with Architect Nelson Aquino as Architect-in-Charge of

Construction) continued and completed the supervision of the construction phase of the Project implemented through a contractor

(Atlantica, based on the original Contract in the amount of P17,501,345.15 with 82.75% work accomplishment). The Project was

completed with variation works: Variation Authorization Order #01 (P3,567,986.01 for additional 130 calendar days) based on the as-

built drawings and revised design submitted by AFSSI. The Project with a revised contract amount of P18,022,793.94 (and a duration of

370 calendar days) is 100% complete as of 15 October 2012 (or after 370 calendar day). The Project is duly certified complete and

accepted (12 November 2012). The certification of compliance with the Bureau of Fire Protection has yet to be secured.

37. Old Legislative Building: Preservation of the Senate Session Hall. The Division (with Architect Evelyn Esguerra as Architect-In-Charge-of-

Construction and assisted by Architect Geraldine Uy) completed the supervision of the construction phase of the Project implemented

through a contractor (401 Development & Construction in the amount of P9,124,062.14 for 90 calendar days). The Project commenced

on 19 July 2012 and was completed with variation works: (i) Variation Order #01 of P 890,000.00; (ii) Deductive Works of P1,471,641.20;

(iii) Variation Order #03 of P113,833.46. The Project has a Revised Contract Cost of P10,014,602.69 (with additional 15 calendar

days).The Project was duly certified and accepted 95.45% complete as of 30 September 2012. The Certificate of Building Occupancy has

yet to be secured and submitted by the contractor.

38. Old Finance Building: The Division supervised the construction phase (Architect Evelyn Esguerra as Architect-In-Charge-of-Construction)

supervised the construction phase of the Project being implemented through a building contractor (401 Development & Construction in

the amount of P4,799,618.81 for 90 calendar days). The Project commenced on 12 September 2012 and is about 32.74% complete (as

of 20 November 2012), with variation works and time extensions.

39. Retrofit of Butuan Branch Museum (Butuan,Agusan del Norte). The Division supervised of the construction phase (with Architect

Nelson Aquino as Architect-In-Charge-of Construction) of the Project that commenced 17 December 2012. Works involve the

rehabilitation of galleries and associated spaces, construction of toilets and repair of repository structure.

40. Retrofit of Fort Pilar / Zamboanga Branch Museum (Zamboanga, Zamboanga Sibugay).The Division supervised of the construction phase

(with Architect Nelson Aquino as Architect-In-Charge-of Construction) of the Project that commenced 17 December 2012. Works

involve the rehabilitation of galleries and associated spaces, construction of toilets and repair of repository structure.

41. Retrofit of Padre Burgos House / Vigan Branch Museum (Vigan, Ilocos Sur).The Division supervised of the construction phase (with

Architect Evelyn Esguerra as Architect-In-Charge-of Construction) of the Project that commenced 28 December 2012.

42. NM Batanes Extension Office and Research Center Museum (Uyugan, Batanes). The Division (with Architect Nelson Aquino as Architect-

In-Charge-of-Construction) maintained coordination with the DPWH Batanes in the construction phase of the Project.

43. Kiangan Branch Museum (Kiangan, Ifugao). The Division completed the maintenance and minor repairs involving the roof and ceiling of

the museum building.

44. Old Legislative Bldg./NAG Function Rooms, Common Areas and Grounds The Division completed the dismantling and reassembly of the

retablo and aan Orlina sculpture one gallery room to another. The Division completed the maintenance and minor repairs involving the

roof of the museum building. .

45. Building Maintenance and Operations of the Mechanical Equipment & Air-Conditioning System

a. The Division supervised and implemented the Maintenance of Air-Conditioning System at the Old Legislative Building. The

maintenance contractor D.M. Hernandez Engineering provided services for the maintenance of 160 air-conditioning units from

January to December 2012. The air conditioning units with a total capacity of 471 TR (tonnage of refrigeration) covered a total gross

floor area of 10,191 square meters.

b. The Division supervised and implemented the Maintenance of Air-Conditioning System of the Planetarium Building. The

maintenance contractor D.M. Hernandez Engineering provided services for the maintenance of 10 air- conditioning units from

January to December 2012. The air conditioning units with a total capacity of 35.5 TR (tonnage of refrigeration) covered a total gross

floor area of 1,251 square meters.

c. The Division supervised and implemented the Maintenance of Elevators of the Old Legeislative Building. The maintenance

contractors provided services for the maintenance of 3 units passenger elevator from January to December 2012.

4. Ar. Arnulfo F. Dado participated as peer evaluator in The 11th

Annual Conference of the Council of Architectural Researchers and

Educators (ACARE 11) held in De La Salle University-Dasmarinas, Dasmarinas City, Cavite on January 26, 2012.

5. The Division engaged and supervised two fourth year architecture students from Far Eastern University in their On-the-job Training for a

total of 320 man-hours at the Restoration and Engineering Division.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES and MUSEUM BRANCHES DIVISION I. EXHIBIT DEVELOPMENT

1) Improvement of Angono-Binangonan Exhibit on March 2012

The improvement includes placing of the “Tikao stone, Laguna copper plate, and Calatagan pot. The scripts or characters etched on

the said materials are evidence of ancient Filipino writings similar to the Angono Petroglyphs.

2) New exhibits of Bohol branch, set-up on July 2012, dubbed as:

a) Hermogena “Nene” Lungay, a portrait of a mother, an artists, Bohol’s pride.

b) Gasa

c) Sagisag Kultura of NCCA

3) Improvement exhibition galleries of Kabayan Branch on December 2012

This includes mounting of exhibits, installation of new ceilings and lightings.

3) Melissa Agulan and Leo Batoon attended a lecture on Discoursing Philippine Muslim History: Implications on historiography and

4) Linricon A. Absuelo, Museum Curator I, attended the National Enforcement Database Development Consultative Workshop in

Tagaytay from October 24 to 26, 2012.

5) Mr. Leo Batoon acted as lecturer for the 2012 International Museum Day celebration in Bikol from May 9-11, 2012.

A one-day outreach activity organized byMED for theSummer Workshop Festival, where multiple fun-filled and skills-loaded

workshops are conducted for the marginalized and under privileged youths. For the 6th

Summer Workshop Festival which

was held at the Museum of the Filipino People on May 17, 2012, nine (9) exciting workshops were simultaneously conducted

including origami, tole painting, paper recycling, recycled plastic bottles, kulintang music, interpretative dance, recycled

coconut twigs, pop-up greeting cards, and bleach painting.

Regional Museum Visitors for the month of January to March, 2012

A total of 257 marginalized youths from 11 different youth centers signed in as participants in the different workshops. ATD

Fourth World, Tahanan Sta Luisa, SOS Children Village Philippines, He Cares Foundation, Virlanie Foundation, Hospicio de

San Jose, House of Sarang, Senden Home Foundation, Unang Hakbang Foundation, DSWD-Manila, and Children of Charity-

San Sebastian Parish were among the participating youth centers, with few who are children of National Museum employees

came to join.

2. 4th

Nature Walk: Marshland Ecology of Candaba, Pampanga

Nature Walk is one of the regular activities of MED that aims to disseminate the Museum’s knowledge and expertise in the

area of natural history. It provides an experiential learning in an outdoor environment for better appreciation of nature and

natural heritage conservation. The three-day training which took place from April 24 to 26, 2012 at the Candaba Marsh was

participated by twenty eight (28) individuals most of whom are students from the University of the Philippines-Manila,

Fatima University, Lyceum of the Philippines University. Majority of the participants are taking Biology courses and social

sciences. The rest of the participants are college faculty members, private individuals with few representing some museums

and local government units.

3. Special Basic Museology Training

MED in collaboration with the West Visayas Association of Museums, Inc., conducted the Special Basic Museology Training

for the members of the group on March 12-16, 2013. Twenty three (23) participants signed in who are mostly museum

workers either as museum managers, curators, museum guides and museum volunteers.

Among the topics covered by the training included “Local and International Museum Related Laws” with focus on Republic

Act 10066 otherwise known as the Heritage Law by Mr, Angel Bautista, Preventive Conservation of Museum Objects by Mr.

Robert Balarbar, “Planning and Designing Simple Exhibits” by Mr. Artemio Barbosa, Museum Marketing and Promotion by

Mrs. Elenita D.V. Alba and “Basic Principles of Museum Guiding” by Mr. Melchor Lagartija.

4. Collaborative Work with External Stakeholders

4.1 Appreciating Japanese Culture (Tea Ceremony, Origami and Ikebana)

Th National Museum in partnership with the Museum Volunteers of the Philippines (MVP) agreed to conduct a series

of lecture-demonstration spread through out the year. The series was called “Appreciating Japanese Culture” which

aimed at educating the public on aspects of Japanese cultural life, with the end objective of making them appreciate

these facets of Japanese cultural life.First of the series was the “Japanese Tea Ceremony” conducted on February 16,

2012, followed by “Origami” on May 10, 2012. The finale part was on “Ikebana” which was implemented on

December 6, 2012. All the three activities were held at the Museum of the Filipino People and attended by students

and teachers from the different schools and universities within Manila in coordination with the Division of City

Schools-Manila through the Office of Division Superintendent Dr. Ponciano Menguito.

PLANETARIUM

1. Regular Planetarium Program:

The division came out with a new planetarium program entitled, “Starry Starry Night”. The new program produced by the

planetarium staff had its soft opening during the opening ceremony of 2012 National Astronomy Week on February 18, 2012.

Other planetarium programs available for viewing are the “Journey to the Solar System” and “Ocean in Space”. Shown four

times daily from Tuesdays to Saturdays, these planetarium programs continue to attract a large number of viewers,

especially students from Metro Manila and other nearby provinces. This year, a total of 36,935 visitors generated an income

of Php 1,116,200.00.

2. Astronomical Exhibition:

Aside from the regular planetarium shows, the permanent astronomical exhibits in the octagonal hall have also attracted a

large crowd of students as well as astronomy enthusiasts. The main features are the paintings of the Filipino Myths and

Beliefs in Astronomy, the dioramas of the Solar System, Major Constellations, and Space Explorers among others. A total of

2,350 viewers were able to see the exhibits for free.

The division’s outreach program, the “Mobile Planetarium” which aims to bring astronomy closer to the people continues to

4. Special Activities and other Related Activities:

To disseminate astronomical knowledge effectively, different activities were delivered by the division, to wit:

1. In celebration of the 2012 National Astronomy Week, the Planetarium Division hosted the opening ceremonies of the

event of the Philippine Astronomical Society (PAS) and the Astronomical League of the Philippines, Inc. (ALP) on February

18, 2012 and February 19, 2012, respectively. Activities includes:

a) PAS activities during the Opening Ceremonies on February 18, 2012:

- Different competitions were given to the high school and college students from different schools in Metro

Manila. Categories includes, Astroquiz, essay writing, poster making and photo essays

b) ALP activities during the Opening Ceremonies on February 19, 2012:

Philippine Astronomy Convention. This convention aims to raise public awareness and promotion of

astronomy and science literacy to our Filipino youth and community.

The planetarium staff also conducted stargazing activities at Rizal Park and at Rajah Solayman Park, Malate, Manila on

the said dates from 6:00pm to 10:00pm as part of the celebrations. Promenaders of Rizal Park and Rajah Soliman Park

were able to see planet Saturn and other deep sky objects using different types of telescopes provided by the division

and the two astronomical institutions.

2. As part of the division’s extension services, a lecture in basic astronomy was conducted on April 18, 2012 to the science

high school teachers of Metro Manila. Topics in “Stellar Evolution” and “Stars and Constellations” were presented by

Mr. Roberto Silvestre and Ms. Liza B. Quitlong, respectively. This is part of the 3-day Workshop in Earth Science and

Lecture in Basic Astronomy given to the science teachers in Metro Manila every year for free as a joint educational

project with the Geology Division.

3. In celebration of the 2012 Global Astronomy Month, the Planetarium Division conducted the following activities:

3.1. Planet Saturn Watch at Astro Camp, Mall of Asia, Pasay City on April 15, 2012

3.2. Overnight Out-of-Town Observation at Gethsemane Prayer Mountain, Montalban, Rizal on April 21-22, 2012

3.3. Lectures on basic astronomy to the participants of Gethsemane out-of-town observations. Topics discussed

were: Types of Telescopes and their functions, Identifications of Constellations using their Prominent Stars and

Different Sky Objects, and Differentiation Between Stars and Planets Using Naked Eye)

3.4. Global Star Party to the promenaders of Rizal Park on April 28, 2012

4. Observed, documented and conducted public viewing of Partial Solar Eclipse at Rizal Park, Manila on May 21, 2012 with

members of ALP in cooperation with the National Parks and Development Committee (NPDC).

5. On June 6, 2012, Planetarium staff with the ALP were able to observed and documented the occurrence of Transit of

Venus at Rizal Park, Manila. This event was featured live in the ABS-CBN morning show, “Umagang Kay Ganda” and other

local and international media.

6. Attended and participated in the International Observe the Moon Night at Rajah Solayman Park, Malate, Manila on

September 22, 2012 from 6:30-10:30pm with ALP members.

7. In celebration of the 37th

year anniversary of the division, the Planetarium once again invited one school in Manila to be

part of the celebrations. Selected students and teachers of Ramon Magsaysay High School, España, Manila were given a

storytelling entitled, “Ang Alamat ng Kalangitan, Buwan at mga Bituin”, a lecture about “The Calendar”, and a free

planetarium show last October 9, 2012.

8. In November, the Planetarium Division was featured in the morning program of Channel 4, “Panahon.TV”. With this

program, the NM Planetarium was featured in their episode “Mundo ng Siyensa”, wherein different activities and

programs of the Planetarium were being promoted.

9. Other educational services of the Planetarium included assistance to the students conducting research in basic

astronomy, planetarium education, and planetarium architectural designs. Other related activities are the hosting of the

monthly meeting of the Astronomical League of the Philippines, Inc. (ALP) and other astronomical societies.

5. Planetarium Program Produced by the Planetarium staff:

“Starry Starry Night” – a planetarium show intended for the young children as well as the general public. It provides the

viewers with an understanding of the origin and evolution of the stars, the formation of the solar system and learns how

to locate famous stars and constellations in the night sky.
