The last year can be summed up in three words: exciting, challenging, and motivating. We built homes in partner-ship with two wonderful families, launched a Home Repair Initiative, relocated our ReStore, and welcomed a new Executive Director.

Below is a brief description of our journey and an invitation to join our mission: To bring people together to make decent homes achievable for everyone in our community.

Building Simple, Decent HomesSince 1991, Benton Habitat for Humanity has worked alongside students, churches, service groups, and community volunteers to build homes in Benton County.

Benton Habitat for Humanity offers families stability through a no-interest loan throughout the life of their mortgage. In order to qualify as a partner family, families must demonstrate a housing need, be a resident of Benton County for a least one year, have the ability to pay monthly mortgage payments, and commit

to working a minimum of 500 hours on their home.

In June of 2013, the Luque family and the Neely family moved into their newly built Habitat homes at 12th Street in Philo-math. This completed development is now home to four partner families.

Over the past year, Pedro Luque worked daily on his home (over 500 hours total) before heading to his job at Foster Farms in Corvallis. Pedro and his wife Ana Maria have three daughters: Vanessa (13),

Itzel (9) and Mariana (5). In their appli-cation to partner with Benton Habitat, the Luques wrote, “When we came to this city in a new country with a new language, it was really hard for us to be a part of it. Meeting the Global Housing NeedBenton Habitat for Humanity is also part of the global housing relief efforts. The world is experiencing a global housing crisis. Worldwide, some 827.6 million people live in urban slums. Our tithing program allows us to have a global impact on the housing need. Annually, we send funds to the Habitat for Humanity International global relief efforts. A portion of our funds are earmarked for housing programs in Honduras, which serves 770 families per year. The remaining tithing funds are designated for housing activities in areas of greatest need.

By contributing to Benton Habitat for Humanity, you are helping local families break the cycle of poverty and build long-term financial security. Habitat’s affordable, non-profit house payments free up the families’ money for food,

child care, medicine and other necessities. Research has shown that decent housing improves health, increases children’s educational achievement and strengthens community ties.

Founded in 1991, Benton Habitat for Humanity is an affilliate of Habitat for Humanity International. We are a community based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organi-zation serving Benton County, Oregon.

We welcome volunteers and supporters from all backgrounds. We also serve people in need of decent housing regardless of race, religion, age, gender, politi-cal views or any of the other distinctions that too often divide people.

About Benton Habitat

Abigail, and Talia and Matt also have two girls, Judy and Alice. Talia said of her new home, “It will be a blessing to have a new home of course, but even better is that we will feel more comfortable with mainte-nance required in homeownership before we move in, due to all the labor we put into it.”

The 12th Street project involved 417 volunteers, logging a total of over 6,200 volunteer hours. Community partners included many groups from Oregon State University, local churches and businesses, and Habitat for Humanity International Global Village teams from around the country.

Work is well underway at 5th and B Street in Corvallis. Volunteers for National Women Build Week raised the walls on Maria Moore’s home in May. Shortly after, the foundation was poured for the Kanode home. This four home subdivision will be completed in 2015, and the Kanodes and Moores will move in early 2014.

The Role of the ReStoreThe Benton Habitat for Humanity ReStore is a major fundraising mechanisim for our nonprofit. The funds that are generated from the sale of donated home goods go directly to our home building activities. The ReStore has also turned into a won-derful community resource, providing a low cost alternative for the communities’ home maintenance, repair and remodele-ing needs. An additional benefit that has emerged from the ReStore is the ability to partner with area programs and provide important job training skills through workforce development initiatives.

A major undertaking during the last year was the relocation of the ReStore and Habitat offices to 4840 SW Philomath Boulevard. The move involved 3,340 volunteer hours, and it was worth it! We have experienced a monthly increase in sales due to the increased visibility and additional space.

The ReStore was also the honored recip-ient of the Good Steward of the Planet award by the Corvallis Chamber of Com-merce. The award is given to an organiza-tion that makes a significant contribution to improving the environmental health of Corvallis. This award was a community effort. Thank you to everyone that has assisted in the growth of the ReStore!

Building Communities through a Home Repair InitiativeLast year saw the continuation of a pilot program called the Home Repair Iniative (HRI). This program focuses on creating decent living conditions through essential home repairs. Similar to our New Home program, families can finance their repair through a no-interest loan. When appro-priate, the family is also part of the work team that assists in the repair labor.

Since the program’s inception 18 months ago, we have completed eight essential home repair projects and are currently working on five more.
