Annual Report 2011

A Message From the CEO & PresidentAt Street Soccer USA our business is built on one thing: the transformative power of sports. In 2011, SSUSA reached a new high of nearly 2000 program participants. We also achieved new levels of success: over 91% of program participants learn essential life skills that led to life changing outcomes in health, education, housing, and employment. Take our Street Soccer USA Cup tournament, for example. From our 240 participants alone, 173 secured housing, employment, pursued further education, or successfully completed a treatment program. Or look at SSUSAs Lady Salamander Women's initiative. Participation in that program increased by 300 percent from 2 to 6 teams and sent 8 women, coached by program graduate Lisa Wrightsman, to compete as the second ever all women's team in the Homeless World Cup in Paris this past August. How do we keep these achievements going? In 2011, we focused on and took huge strides towards sustainable growth. We increased our pool of donors to over 700. Through our University partnership with Texas A&M and the University of Louisville, SSUSA revamped its quality control, program accreditation, and strategic planning processes. To better document our results, we implemented a new web-based data collection system. In partnership with Deloitte, SSUSA planned the launch of a 2012 board development initiative. We are in this business for the long haul. A well-trained staff is crucial to sustainability. SSUSA trained 45 new project leads in our coaching techniques on the local level. On the central staff level, SSUSA has developed its future leadership; staff are pursuing postgraduate degrees in social work at Tulane University (Will Mazzuto), a Masters in Business Administration at Columbia University (Lawrence Cann), and one staff has completed a Masters Degree in Sports Management at the University of San Francisco (Rob Cann). Most impressively, we hired two SSUSA program graduates as staff members in New York (TK Ajiboye) and Los Angeles (Johnny Figueroa). 2011 was also a successful year in raising the prole of SSUSAs work. In addition to continued coverage in the press, SSUSA engaged high prole athletes in our work including the NBAs Steve Nash and Kobe Bryant, the NFLs Troy Vincent, MLS leading scorer Chris Wondolowski, and English Premier League defender Emmerson Boyce of Wigan Athletic. Ending homeless and poverty is a team sport. Thanks to the hard work and investment of all involved, 2011 has positioned SSUSA for a year of growth and major impacts in 2012. In the words of our late friend, program graduate, and ambassador Kevin Polk of Fort Worth, Being part of the SSUSA team means never being alone, and I want to thank you for that on behalf of all the people like me out there.

RELATIONSHIPS

Building relationships are at the heart of everything we do at Street Soccer USA. With a caring coach, teammates and caseworker, our players set goals and focus on their future. We build relationships not only with our clients but also with volunteers who join our mission. Through these transformative relationships we end homelessness for a high percentage of our players. Investors and donors make it possible for us to: Teach 8 essential life and job skills to homeless men, women, teens and adults in 18 US Cities through the SSUSA Curriculum Provide equipment for 2000 program participants each year Conduct training for 45 Street Soccer USA coaches and directors each year Host the countrys premier Sport for Social Change Event, the Street Soccer USA Cup, involving 23 SSUSA program teams Take 8 men and 8 women abroad to compete in the 64-nation Homeless World Cup No relationship was more important to us in 2011 than the one we share with our donors and investors. 93% of every corporate dollar and individual donation we receive goes to direct services for one of our participants. We will continue to work hard to earn your trust and ongoing support. We extend our warmest thanks to all of our donors and investors.

RELATIONSHIPS

I do feel like a star, I'm not going to lie! With support from our donors, change happens. In January 2010, Rudy was living in a stairwell in the Bronx. One year and one dose of SSUSA later, Rudy is working, in her own apartment and fresh off a trip to Paris, France where she represented the USA Women in the annual Homeless World Cup. Rudys story is much like that of others we help every year. A former high school basketball star with a love of sports, but no parents, no guidance and no vision for her future, Rudy lost her way and wound up on the streets, homeless. Fortunately someone referred Rudy to HELP USA. There, she found not just shelter but a family of SSUSA teammates to support her. SSUSA offers the chance for participants to regain control of their future by teaching them job and life skills through sports. We invite you to join us and learn more about the clients we serve and be a part of the change in 2012. You can visit us on the web at streetsoccerusa.org to become a donor, volunteer, or join our fan club of supporters. Ending Homelessness is a team sport and we want you to have a role to play with us! Rudy at 2011 SSUSA Cup

STREET SOCCER USA CUP CONTINUES TO INSPIREThe 2011 edition of the Street Soccer USA Cup tournament in Washington, DC featured 23 teams from across the United States. For the rst ever the Cup included an all-womens Lady Salamander division. Minneapolis won both the mens and womens tournament, while Ann Arbor won the Fair-Play Trophy for embodying the true spirit of the event. 8 Men and 8 Women from 10 different cities went on to represent SSUSA at the annual Homeless World Cup in Paris, France in October 2011. The 23 teams from 18 SSUSA-city programs met at Washington Kastles Stadium at the Wharf. The festivities also included the rst ever SSUSA Open Cup which featured 32 community teams from across the Metro DC area. This new addition to the tournament helped educated the public on the mission of SSUSA while generating revenue to offset event costs. SSUSA will replicate this model across the country. In 2012, events in Charlotte, DC, New York and San Francisco are already scheduled. This part of our business will leverage our brand from an excellent social service to a leadership position in the emerging sport of street soccer.

STREET SOCCER USA: LEVERAGING YOUR DOLLARSSSUSA provides the SSUSA program free of charge to existing local non-prots and trains their staff to run the program. That way, keeping overhead low and impact high, SSUSA has positioned itself to grow quickly while maintaining a high level of service. As our next step, in 2012 we will begin to expand our reach in the cities where we work by opening regional offices to aid in program funding and development. Street Soccer USA Annual Report 2011Economic Impact:

RETURN

We wanted to know if our program was having an economic impact on the community. So we did a survey of 25 participants in 3 of our programs. We found that emergency room visits dropped by 40%. Jail time was eliminated entirely. This conrms that sports can play a key role in reducing recidivism rates as well as promoting healthy lifestyle choices. The impact of these results, when amplied, is tremendous. Homeless individuals visit the hospital 5 times as often as the non-homeless and cost on average $2500 more per visit*. Maintaining jails cost tax payers a signicant amount of dollars as well. The results in savings to the community due to less jail time and fewer hospital visits in a sampling of just 25 SSUSA members is approximately $277,500 or $11,100 per constituent. Furthermore, from the same sample group, 18, or about 75%, found jobs and/or left the shelter system within one year, meaning they began contributing taxes to the community furthering the positive economic impact of the program. $20,000.00 $15,000.00 $10,000.00 $5,000.00 $0

This all adds up to a tremendous bottom line for Street Soccer USA in 2011. Yet we are only at the beginning of what we truly can achieve. Our rising level of philanthropic support in a tough economy bodes well for future growth of the organization, while our commitment to social innovation makes us an increasingly attractive partner for the communities we work in. The SSUSA program has quickly become the sports-based national model for transferring job and life skills to homeless kids, youth and adults. It works.
