GREG BARCLAyI am pleased to deliver this as my first annual report since becoming Chairman of the Northern Districts Cricket Association (“ND”) in November last year. Since then it has been both an interesting and exciting six months for ND. Our on-field performance and successes have been highlighted elsewhere in this report so I do not intend to elaborate on this other than to take the opportunity to congratulate all parties involved in that success, both individuals and teams. Like all of us, I hope that success is emulated this season and beyond.

When I joined the Board in 2007 we were beginning to formulate our four year strategic plan, to commence in 2008. We articulated, as our Vision, “ND being recognised internationally as an excellent sports organisation”. Our Mission, formed at the same time, was “to build a strong and sustainable base that consistently develops champion individuals and teams”. As we now begin to formulate the next strategic plan it is useful to consider how the last four years have gone.

There is absolutely no doubt that the Mission has largely been achieved, and in this regard, ND can be justifiably proud. The “Vision”, however, is more difficult to quantify. ND has certainly made huge progress over the last four years with international selections, the winning of competitions, excellent development and high performance programmes and a great venue at Seddon Park. However, and if we are honest, as the face of cricket has changed globally at a dramatic rate, we still have a way to go to be “recognised internationally as an excellent sports organisation”. We do remain committed to achieving that goal.

From the Board’s perspective, it is pleasing to see that the considerable investment in terms of time, energy and resource that is put into cricket at ND continues to reap reward. I truly believe that ND is the country’s leading Major Association and that we set the benchmark for others to follow. I readily acknowledge that there is, and probably always will be, considerable room for improvement. It is one of our prime objectives to continue to do everything that we can to realise our potential and to set the bar as high as possible in our quest to be “an excellent sports organisation”. Having said that, the pursuit of excellence comes at a cost.

Like many sporting organisations, we are very reliant on distributions from our national body, dedicated funding from gaming and community trusts, sponsorship and, of course, revenue derived from the staging of cricket at our venues. To ensure that we deliver the programmes that we are committed to, we need to at least maintain our current cost structure. This means that financial performance is a careful balancing exercise and any unexpected change to revenue or any unforeseen happening can have a significant impact on our financial position. We, as I said, share this challenge with many sporting organisations, therefore it is also our aim to become more financially sustainable and to get ND into a position where we can begin to build up meaningful cash reserves.

As I write this report and as a real example, we face the threat of a change to the legislation affecting gaming trust funding as well as global financial impacts detrimentally affecting the revenues received by New Zealand Cricket (NZC).

To alleviate some of the financial risks we face, ND sees genuine opportunity arising out of the way the current domestic competitions, that is, Plunket Shield, Ford Trophy and HRV Cup (T20) are operated. It is not the intention to change the essential nature of cricket at domestic level, but we firmly believe that much better outcomes could be achieved through the restructure of the domestic game as it is currently delivered. If progress is made in this regard and we are able to gain the support of other Major Associations, together with NZC and the New Zealand Cricket Players Association, then we believe that a much better product will be able to be delivered. This, hopefully, should result in better revenues being obtained which will enable ND to be able to build a better financial base and, ultimately, to invest back into cricket within our region.

I fully acknowledge the work that the District Associations do to ensure they have good venues and facilities in their regions. In particular it was pleasing to see an international match awarded to Northland at their excellent facility at Cobham Oval.

We are currently working closely with Hamilton City Council to further improve Seddon Park which is an integral part of our business and which remains the home of ND. It is currently also regarded as New Zealand’s pre-eminent international cricket venue. We hope to continue to enhance Seddon Park to ensure that it maintains this status and we are pleased to see that “The Cricketer” magazine recently ranked Seddon Park as number fifteen in the world as a venue at which to watch cricket.

I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the help and support that we get from a number of people, not least of all our sponsors and other commercial stakeholders of the game. Their ongoing support is essential for the wellbeing of ND.

We also have great support from our District Associations and we are committed to continuing to work closely with them, assisting wherever possible and recognising that our support of their operations is vital to ensure that success in ND permeates all the way to the top. Within the District Associations are numerous volunteers, coaches, supporters and players without whom it would not be possible to achieve what we do. Their contribution often goes largely unrecognised, and we would like to acknowledge and thank all those people for what they do for cricket within the ND region and to making ND the special entity that it is.

As a Board, we are only as good as our management and administrative function allows us to be. We are very fortunate that we have a particularly dedicated and capable team of people who often go above and beyond the call of duty in what they do for ND. That team is ably led by our CEO David Cooper, and on behalf of the Board, I would like to thank him for his contribution to ND. I would also like to acknowledge the efforts made by the Board, who have been committed to, and focused on, delivering to our Strategic Vision, to see us being recognised internationally as an excellent sporting organisation. We will continue to strive to attain this lofty goal.

Finally, I encourage everyone involved with ND, in whatever capacity, to continue to give their ongoing support to ensure that this organisation remains the leading Major Association in New Zealand.

DAVID COOPERThe 2011-12 year has been a good one for Northern Districts Cricket, with the year ending with a trophy in the cabinet, a strong financial performance, continued growth in playing numbers, a successful international season and a continuation of the dominance of Northern Knights players in the BLACKCAPS.

The following report shows how the Association has tracked against it’s strategic objectives. This year signals the last year of the current strategic plan and I think it is fair to say that during the four year plan, Northern Districts Cricket has, in many facets, continued to be a benchmark for cricket in this country.

However, the one area that has not significantly improved and equally not achieved the strategic objective is the financial position of the organisation. The struggle to produce a positive result is mirrored elsewhere in the country and there is a need to review and overhaul the model the domestic game currently works under.

On behalf of all staff, I thank everybody across our vast region who has contributed to and been part of another successful period for Northern Districts Cricket.

Thank you.

Northern Districts Cricket Association would like to acknowledge the work done by the District Associations across our region and also the Northern Districts Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association - thank you to all that are involved with them.

CEO REPORt

FINANCIALOur financial future is protected by building reserves to at least 10% of revenue by 2012

While it is disappointing to report that Northern Districts Cricket did not reach its strategic objective at the end of the strategic plan period, following on from a very disappointing 2010-11 financial year it was imperative that the organisation bounce back with a successful financial year in 2011-12.

As mentioned earlier in this report, the current model that domestic cricket operates under is difficult and across the country it has been found to be very challenging.

However, in 2011-12 Northern Districts Cricket produced a surplus of $74,000 - a turnaround of $276,000 on the previous financial year’s performance.

Not only was the turnaround positive other factors to consider are:

• working capital position was improved by $123,000

• a reduction in long term debt

• a cleaner balance sheet

For obvious reasons, a continued improvement in the financial position is the number one goal of the Association. However, this does need to be balanced with the continuation of our highly successful cricket programmes.

SEDDON PARKIs acknowledged as the premier international venue in NZ by 2012 (Measure: Number of Matches)

The touring sides to New Zealand during the summer were Zimbabwe, off the back off New Zealand’s tour there, and South Africa, a side stacked with exceptional skill. They were also the number one Test playing nation, one day international and Twenty20 cricket.

Seddon Park, Hamilton was to continue to show it’s importance to New Zealand Cricket as a venue by hosting two Twenty20 internationals (against both Zimbabwe and South Africa) and a Test Match (South Africa).

Once again Seddon Park found itself in amongst records as South African Richard Levi broke the world record for the fastest century (45 balls) and also the most sixes in an innings (13) during the T20 in February 2012.

Further to the Association’s objectives around Seddon Park, a further two internationals were played on venues inside the Northern Districts region. Gisborne’s Harry Barker Reserve was the venue for the New Zealand XI versus Zimbabwe warm up match prior to the First Test. Zimbabwe then went on to play a One Day International in Whangarei against the BLACKCAPS on the beautiful Cobham Oval - a match won comfortably by New Zealand.

PAT MALCONHIGH PERFORMANCEAfter a disappointing 2010-11 season, the Northern Knights bounced back in 2011-12 to regain the Plunket Shield, the four day championship trophy. The HRV cup was disappointing, the Knights still unable to succeed at T20 level. The Ford Trophy (One Day Competition) saw mixed results and a third place finish.

The Northern Spirit, still a young and developing team, finished 4th in both the Action Cricket One Day Cup and the Action Cricket T20.

Northern Districts continued to be a major producer of international players. Seven ND players appeared for the BLACKCAPS in Test matches - Trent Boult, BJ Watling, Kane Williamson, Daniel Vettori, Daniel Flynn, Tim Southee and Brent Arnel. Graeme Aldridge made it eight BLACKCAPS when he played One Day and T20 internationals. Morna Nielsen and Anna Peterson appeared for the WHITEFERNS.

Northern Districts also contributed 4 players to the NZU19 Men’s team and 4 players to the NZU21 Women’s team.

CaPtaINS’ REPORtSPLUNKET SHIELD CAPTAINBRaD WILSON

This season the Plunket Shield was split into two parts, with four games before Christmas and six games to finish the season. The key to winning this competition is about doing the basics well over a long period of time. There was no denying that this was a big strength of ours, and is what helpe us take home the silverware.

This season also saw a change in the points structure, with the inclusion of first innings bonus points. This was a good change as it encouraged positive cricket and kept games moving.

We didn’t start the season well with a loss to Auckland in Whangarei, but managed to pick ourselves up and secure good wins against Wellington and Canterbury, which put us 10 points clear heading into the start of the other forms. Six games in a row to finish the season was going to be a challenge, both mentally and physically. Our first two games were crucial as we had most of our BLACKCAPS available, so to get two outright results in these games would make life easier heading towards the final few games. Our consistency continued to shine and got us over the line at crucial stages and we were able to celebrate winning the shield at lunch on Day 3 of the last game.

There were some players in our squad that I think deserve special mention for achievements and milestones throughout the season. James Marshall took the record off our coach Grant Bradburn for the record number of first class games for ND. Kane Williamson broke the highest score for ND with 284. Daniel Flynn equalled the record number of centuries for ND.

Finally, it is great to have the Plunket Shield back where it belongs. Hopefully next season we’ll have two other trophies to go along side it!

FORD TROPHy CAPTAINJaMES MaRSHaLL

With such a busy season and to fit in all the games, our first few limited over matches were on the back of Plunket Shield matches. We struggled to adapt between the formats and after 3 rounds were at the tail of the pack with very few players standing out. We didn’t have momentum and needed to find it quick. Round 5 versus Wellington was an opportunity to resurrect our campaign.

We batted well with Hamish Marshall, Scott Styris and Corey Anderson getting fifties, all facing very few balls, plus a hundred from the captain. We were defending 300. Our bowlers showed great composure on a very good batting wicket to get our first win. There was a break for the Twenty20 competition then at the start of February, we were back into it. Again, we showed a lack of skill, composure and confidence as we lost two more games. But there was a shining light with Anton Devcich scoring his maiden hundred for the Knights. A fantastic and mature knock that needed more support from teammates.

In our final match we came home with a win, with a great spell of bowling from Jono Boult which contained the Canterbury batting line-up. Anton’s 78no was another good knock, seeing us home, and was well backed up with Hamish scoring 83.

It was not our best season in the 50 over game, but from the evidence of some youth introduced and showing very good skills, I believe this team is a title winning group for the future.

HRV CUP CAPTAINSCOtt StYRIS

This year’s HRV Cup was a very frustrating campaign. Once again the schedule saw us play this competition over the holiday period, but unfortunately the weather gods didn’t come to the party. Two of the four matches at the Mount were rain affected.

We did though make some good progress in the way the Northern Knights played T20 cricket. Previous seasons have seen the team struggle with this format of the game, and we tried to implement some strategies to help improve our results. Overall I think we made some strides forward, as heading into the final round only the champion Auckland Aces had beaten us, in matches that weren’t rain affected.

Our strengths were definitely our bowling and fielding. With Kane Williamson and Dan Vettori leading the country in economy rates, plus Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Graeme Aldridge and Anton Devcich all putting in good performances, the nucleus is there for an extended run at this title.

I believe with another year’s development from our players we can genuinely target winning this competition, and it would be amazing to see the pink of the Northern Knights in India playing against the champions of all the other Test playing nations from around the world.

We are under no illusions we must take our game up a level to achieve this, but I have no doubt that coach Grant Bradburn and the players will be working hard this winter to improve those skills to ensure we win the HRV Cup next summer.

GRANT BRADBURNSeason 2011/12 has come and gone, with Knights players now scattered all over the globe for the winter months. Back at Northern Districts’ headquarters the boardroom once again looks complete with the Plunket Shield hanging proudly on the wall.

Trophy victories on the field simply don’t come along easily. ND have experienced many years of heartache when titles have eluded us. The significance of a trophy is highlighted when you look at the records of other Associations over the past decade and note that Auckland are the only association that matches our consistency in recent times.

With now five titles over the past six years, ND is experiencing its most significant success on the field. This most recent Plunket Shield victory was achieved despite eight of our Knights representing the BLACKCAPS at various stages over the past season.

Our BLACKCAP players all made major contributions during their short stints with us during the Plunket Shield. They all led the team with outstanding individual contributions, which paved the way for our depth of younger talent to step into their shoes and have the confidence to perform on the Knights’ stage when the BLACKCAPS were away on international duty.

Plunket Shield captain Brad Wilson contended with 28 players coming and going from the four day side over the summer. Fortunately, not much troubles our skipper and he was able to guide the Knights to consistency despite many changes in personnel.

With the large number of BLACKCAPS comes opportunity for others to step in and step up to the Knights. There is healthy competition for places in the playing eleven. The work ethics are extremely high as are the growing skill levels of the whole squad. We now have a huge number of players who have the ability to perform for the Knights, which are a direct result of the success of the ND High Performance development programmes, and in particular the Craig’s Academy. We now see players arriving at the Knights’ door who are well rounded, self driven, resilient athletes who are hungry to perform.

Are the Knights as good as they can be? ... no way. Will the opposition improve? ... you bet ya! As a team the Knights are well aware that performances in the One Day and T20 formats were not as we expected, with patches of brilliance coupled with poor team results at key stages of the white ball season. As a team the Knights strive to continually improve, and there is strong determination from within the side to lift performances with both the red and white ball.

Success on the field is the final product of a lot of hard work backstage. From David Cooper our CEO, the ND Board, to the administration staff, the marketing department, the high performance staff, our groundstaff, to Bill Andersson our stats guru. The team are able to perform only as a result of the hard work and passion you all have for ND and the Knights. The whole organisation should feel pride in knowing you have all contributed to the success on the field.

The Knights team support staff are simply the best in the business and it is such a pleasure to work in an environment amongst such skilled and passionate people. Shane Derry (physio), Graeme Stewart (assistant coach/manager) and Jason Wheadon (trainer) all work tirelessly on behalf of the individual players and the Knights as a whole. It is an honour to work in such company, knowing that each of the staff are so committed to continually improve our players, while always inspiring a lot of fun at the same time.

The Knights launched last season in Rarotonga, with a conditioning boot camp, planning and team building. The season finished with lots of individual achievements and milestones passed. The players have immense pride in playing for ND and have huge respect in performing for each other. Within the side, individual milestones are often overshadowed by a drive to simply play for their mates.

There were many individual highlights, but the players I know will prefer to simply reflect on a job well done by all the squad in putting the Plunket Shield back in our boardroom. As I write, I’m pleased to report all players have indicated a strong desire to be back for the Knights next season and preparation is well underway for more success.

COOK ISLaNDS ICC PaRtNERSHIPThe past twelve months have been a busy and exciting time for Cook Islands Cricket. Through its partnership with Northern Districts Cricket and Edgewater Resort and Spa, Cook Islands Cricket was able to host the Knights on a pre season camp. Their time on Rarotonga was invaluable for our national men’s team who enjoyed padding up against some big names. Thanks to Grant Bradburn in particular and all the players for their hard work and support of the development and growth of cricket in the Cook Islands.

Cook Islands Cricket enjoyed a new partnership with the NZCPA which saw two development visits from former BLACKCAP Mathew Sinclair and WHITEFERN Nicola Browne. Nicola did a wonderful job promoting and energising women’s cricket on Rarotonga and Aitutaki and Cook Islands Cricket appreciates her continued support of all cricketers in the Cook Islands.

Cook Islands Cricket is especially proud of its first ever women’s national team who travelled to participate in the ICC EAP Trophy in May. While a victory on the field eluded the team, pushing some of the more established women’s national teams was a real highlight, especially given 99% of the women had only played cricket for 2 years and had just 3 months preparation.

ND Cricket Operations Manager Pat Malcon and ND Cricket Panellist Umpire Colin Elstob continued their invaluable coaching development visits to Rarotonga and Aitutaki. With over 60 newly qualified coaches and officials in the past twelve months Cook Islands Cricket is already seeing a marked improvement in the development of players and playing conditions throughout its pathway.

Cook Islands Cricket capped off 2011 collecting four awards, with two International Cricket Council awards.

The first for Volunteer of the year which was awarded to Mangaia Cricket President Taoi Nooroa. The second award for Marketing and Promotion of the Knights visit. Two national sports awards were also received. The first went to Aitutaki Cricket men’s team manager Rere Mataiti. Rere also collected the Cook Islands Sports award for international Olympic Personality of the year. CEO Alister Stevic won the Sports Administrator of the year.

Cook Islands Cricket thanks all its partners, particularly Northern Districts Cricket, for their ongoing support for cricket in the Cook Islands.

Northern Districts continued to promote Maori cricket by again fielding a Northern Maori team. The intent is to provide an added pathway in cricket for talented Maori players, but also to increase awareness that a significant number of Maori play cricket in our region. Our age group teams and squads have a number of talented young Maori cricketers.

The Northern Maori team was selected by Pat Malcon and Graeme Stewart from nominations made by the District Associations and Northern Districts High Performance coaching staff. Unfortunately two scheduled Twenty20 games, against Waikato University and a New Zealand Croation XI, had to be cancelled because of bad weather.

However, the feature game of the season, against the NZ Cricket Players’ Association team, was played at Smallbone Park, Rotorua, in March. The NZCPA team included a number of former BLACKCAPS (Dion Nash, Adam Parore, Richard Jones, Llorne Howell, Kerry Walmsley, Shane Thomson) and one current NZ Twenty20 rep in Roneel Hira. The Maori team included a number of promising age group players, plus experienced campaigners in Leighton Parsons (Waikato Valley) and Jono Boult (Knights and BOP).

Ex BLACKCAP Daryl Tuffey returned to his Northern Districts’ origins as a special guest player. The game was given extensive TV coverage by both Maori TV and and Sky TV’s “The Cricket Show.” Tuffey turned in a man of the match performance as the Maori team surprised the NZCPA and won by 6 wickets.

The Northern Maori team was: Leighton Parsons, Graeme Stewart, Danyon Stewart (Waikato Valley), Tamati Clarke, Haamiora Clarke (Counties Manukau), Jake Bezzant (Hamilton), Jono Boult, Shaquille Graham, Ethan Martin, Brett Sorrenson (BOP), Daryl Tuffey (Auckland).

The team was coached by Graeme Stewart with Leighton Parsons as captain. Te Rau Clarke again filled the role of Kaumatua.

Match Statistics

NZCPa Masters XI 122/5 (R Jones 41, A Parore 27 no, S Thomson 17 no, D Tuffey 2/9, T Clarke 1/13, J boult 1/30) lost to Northern Maori 126/4 (D Tuffey 41, J Boult 26, L Parsons 16, H Clarke 22 no, C Pryor 2/25, Ritira 1/31, R Morgan 1/11) by 6 wickets.

NORtHERN DIStRICtS a tEaMNew Zealand Cricket returned to a National Provincial A Tournament for the 2011/12 season. The eight day long Tournament was staged at Lincoln University and featured five one-day fixtures and three T20 games.

The Fuji Xerox Northern Districts A squad for the tournament featured several contracted Knights players, given that our BLACKCAPS were available to represent the Knights through the HRV Cup.

Following the five One-day fixtures the Fuji Xerox Northern Districts A squad sat on top of the points table. Unfortunately, that consistent form didn’t carry through to the T20 games, losing two of the three fixtures. ND A finished the tournament third behind Auckland and Wellington.

The Fuji Xerox Northern Districts A Squad were also very fortunate to continue the excellent relationship with our near neighbour Auckland counterparts. Throughout the summer the two squads played in four One-day fixtures, two T20 fixtures and two Three day games.

Once again the Northern Districts’ hosted games were excellently staged by CMCA at Weymouth Oval and were played on outstanding pitches.

Competitive games of cricket were also played out against the Knights, a two day fixture and a one-day game in late October and a T20 game in December.

Brett Hampton was named the ND A player of the year. Brett’s consistent all round contributions also earned him a call up into the Knights T20 squad.

The ND A squad was Coached/Managed by James Pamment, Northern Districts’ High Performance Coach.

COACHES REPORT Owen SteversonNorthern Spirit finished in 4th place in both the Action Twenty20 and Action Cup 50 Over Competitions. Three of the eleven completed games were won, while four further matches were either abandoned or no-results. The team competed strongly in all matches, with all but one of the six Twenty20 matches that we lost still in doubt going into the 20th and final over.

The improved performances in 2011/12 reflected the hard work that had been completed by the members of the team. The team embarked on a thorough pre-season training regime. Fitness programmes were provided for the players, based on the NZC guidelines, created by Jason Wheadon. Regular group training sessions, for Hamilton based players, were held at Seddon Park or St Peter’s School, Cambridge.

A successful 3 day Spirit / Development camp was held in Gisborne in October. The input of ND High Performance coaches Craig Ross, James Pamment and Pat Malcon into this camp and other sessions was hugely beneficial to the players involved. The team also had two days of lead up matches against the Auckland Hearts and a match against a BOP Secondary School team. We also joined with the Knights for a fielding / fitness morning at Seddon Park in late November. Continuing to investigate opportunities to further enhance and develop this programme in the future is a ‘must do’.

14 players represented the Northern Spirit during the summer of 2011/12. A feature was the relative youth of the team, with eight of the players also representing Northern Districts at the National Development Tournament. Seven of the team were at Secondary School in 2011, with a further two in their first year of study at University. All the players in the Spirit set up could reflect on times during the season when they performed creditably. Striving for consistency in performance is the next step.

Two players, Katie Johnson and Jacinta Coleman, made their debuts at Spirit level. The team was well captained by Morna Nielsen in her first season in this role. Nat Dodd acquitted herself well during her first full season as the team’s wicketkeeper. Nic Browne took a break from the international scene, but continued to be a significant and consistent performer for the Spirit, before announcing her comeback to International level in 2012.

Morna Nielsen gained selection in the WHITEFERNS to tour Australia in January and February and excelled during the home series against England in February and March. A highlight was her figures of 4-10 from 4 overs in a T20 international. Anna Peterson became a new WHITEFERN, playing 3 ODIs against England, scoring 33 runs on

debut. Nat Dodd, Brooke Kirkbride, Felicity Leydon-Davis and Anna Peterson represented New Zealand Emerging Players with distinction in matches against England in February and Australia Emerging Players in March.

Hannah Trollip joined the team for the summer on loan from the NSW Breakers. The 18 year old opener fitted in well with the group and scored quickly at the top of the order. Hopefully this may be the beginning of an ongoing relationship between Northern Districts and New South Wales Cricket. A visit from a NSW 2nd XI team in February consolidated this link and also provided additional playing opportunities for members of the team.

The team was managed by Helen Bastion. The team and I are very much appreciative of the important job she did, along with her sharing of ideas from her past playing experiences.

I was joined on the selection panel by Elaine Nolan and Mark Webb. The creation of a ‘Spirit Selection Pie’ was a new development to provide clarity and consistency around selection.

Sweat Personal Training Studio was named as the Major Sponsor for the Northern Spirit for the season. The inputs of Jason Wheadon, in his dual role of sponsor and fitness trainer, was greatly appreciated by all of us involved with the Spirit. Long may this continue!

Overall there were many positives to come from the Spirit season. The results were an improvement on the previous season and the team were competitive in all matches. The group has a huge amount of potential and are continuing to grow as cricketers with every match and experience. Having numerous players selected in NZ Emerging and WHITEFERN squads bodes well for future individual and team success.

On a personal note I have thoroughly enjoyed the summer. As a coach, it is always a pleasure to work with a group of players who are striving to better themselves as cricketers and people. The support from the Northern Districts staff has been excellent and I thank them all for their time, efforts and expertise. Many thanks also to the Board and David Cooper for their support of women’s cricket. I look forward to a busy off season and the future success of the Northern Spirit team and the individuals within it.

training throughout the winter, with the girls having specific sessions with both Craig Ross and James Pamment to further develop their skills in all areas of the game.

The new season also brought about a sponsor for the Spirit in the form of SWEAT Personal Training Studio. The support from Jason and his team provided a boost to the team, knowing that we had support and someone backing us. As the season drew close we acquired the services of Hannah Trollip, a promising young Australian who bolstered the batting order. With 12 players returning from last season and the addition of Hannah we went into the season with a lot of confidence. The work had been done in the pre-season and everyone was prepared.

The highlight of the season was a clean sweep against Otago. The first game a narrow win, with Heidi Arndt showing real maturity to close out the win, for which she was duly awarded the first SWEAT player of the match. Turning to the one day match we were put into bat first and struggled to get going. At 80/6 after 30 overs Rhiana Vincent and myself combined to put on a 120 run partnership. We finished with 220 and knew we would have to bowl well to get the result. Cue Nicola Browne. Nic bowled with pace and aggression in the ‘avenue of apprehension’ to reap the rewards and finish with her first ever five-wicket bag. In the end a comprehensive win.

Unfortunately, as happened to many teams over the summer, rain was a common factor which saw two of the five one dayers washed out. Each T20 played proved to be a close contest. The whole team really stood up and showed outstanding fighting spirit. Never once did the girls back down when a challenge presented itself. On four occasions when defending below par totals our bowlers fought till the end, taking the game to the last over and making the opposition work hard for their runs, with good back up from the fielders.

Brooke Kirkbride and Felicity Leydon-Davis are making waves with their ability to bowl at the death under pressure.

It was a privilege to lead such an exciting group. We came close on so many occasions that it was enthralling cricket for everyone. A huge improvement in consistency and with the bulk of the group back again next year I can’t wait to see what great things this team will achieve.

Congratulations must go to Anna Peterson who debuted for the WHITEFERNS this summer and has been named in the WHITEFERNS squad along with Nat Dodd, Brooke Kirkbride and Felicity Leydon-Davis and Nicola Browne.

A huge thank you must go to Owen for coaching the team, Manager Helen for organising all the little things that no-one thinks about, SWEAT Personal Training Studio for sponsoring the team, and Northern Districts Cricket. The support we get from the Association is unparallelled and much appreciated.

Lincoln University Christchurch 14-20 December 2011

NZC’s philosophy is that this tournament provides a playing outlet for players who are on the ‘way up’ in the game. It is about developing players below, or just beginning to play, domestic women’s cricket. This season saw a change from Women’s Development to an Under 21 tournament, with current or former White Ferns now ineligible to play in the tournament. Northern Districts had always embraced this philosophy, selecting a team averaging only 17 years of age.

It was another successful year for the Northern Districts’ side, recording five wins and two losses during the national tournament, securing them 2nd place.

There were great team performances throughout the tournament and some outstanding individual performances. Katie Johnson scored 100 runs not out off 71 balls in a T20 and Felicity Leydon-Davis was rewarded for consistent batting and bowling performances by being named PLAyER OF THE TOURNAMENT. Leydon-Davis picked up the Trish McKelvey Trophy, named after a former New Zealand captain.

This season’s format involved four one day games and three Twenty20 games.

This season the tournament became an U16 Tournament (previously Junior Secondary Schoolboys and Under 15 before that). The Fuji Xerox Northern Districts U16 team was selected after the Northern Districts Junior Secondary and Senior Secondary Schoolboys tournaments. The Junior tournament was held in Whangarei in early December and was won by Counties Manukau. The Senior tournament was held in Gisborne in mid December, with Counties Manukau successful in that tournament also.

The fuji Xerox Northern Districts Under 16 Boys team selected for the North Island Tournament was:

James Boyd BOP Coastlands Sam Clotworthy Northland Sean Daniels Northland Zak Gibson Waikato Valley South Simon Lal Counties Manukau Jonty Keaney BOP Lakelands Shannon McSkimming BOP Lakelands Scott Tallott Poverty Bay Myles Timoti BOP Coastlands Sam Turner Counties Manukau Gareth Wallace BOP Coastlands Matt Wallbank Hamilton

Zac Gibson and Simon Lal were injured before the start of the tournament and were replaced by:

Dane Thompson Poverty Bay Shaan Singh-Pahaar Hamilton

The team was coached by Ben Williams, with Jarron Mason as manager/assistant coach.

Northern Districts won the tournament, going through undefeated in the 3 two day games. Scott Tallott was the outstanding batsman at the tournament, but it was a consistent team effort that saw ND emerge victorious.

CRaIGS INVEStMENt PaRtNERS aCaDEMY 2011/12

This year’s Craigs Investment Partners Academy involved a new two-tier structure for the best young players in Northern Districts. The Academy 12-month programme involved 24 players and an eight month option was offered to another 18 players as an introduction.

The focus of this year’s programme was to spend more time educating the players around their own planning and to understand better how to set goals, manage their time week-to-week and report back to the HP manager. The newly branded ‘Crickfit’ planning tool was again used to allow this learning to take place.

Nick Kelly in his first year utilised this tool to gain a far greater understanding of his plan and the pathway to achieving success. Through this process Nick earned selection in the NZ U19 World Cup squad. This progress and learning was further acknowledged when Nick was named the Craigs Investment Partners Academy Player of the year.

James Pamment was assigned to give specialist batting coaching to these players. He did a fantastic job and covered some incredible miles in doing so. Other specialist coaches were engaged for the different skills and the players benefited from this one-on-one contact.

Pat Wigley’s CNS High Performance team allowed us another new opportunity for our players this year. A sprint conditioning programme was established to produce more athletic cricketers and was led by Val Bromley from Tauranga. The pace bowlers were our first participants, and the eight week programme saw some great learning and improved running techniques. The outlying District Associations sourced running coaches who had contact with Val to enable progress with their athletes. I would like to thank Alysha Jensen from Counties-Manukau and Michaela Darwent from Northland for their time and expertise with this. This programme will be further enhanced over the next year. I thank Pat again for his contribution to the Craigs Investment Partners Academy.

Once again I thank all the District Association personnel for their continued and much valued support. We are extremely fortunate to have such a high calibre of coaches in ND that I get to work alongside. If we can involve more time to HP coaching at this level in the future, the benefits will only increase for our best young players.

Grant Bradburn’s approach to once again ‘open the door’ to the Knights’ environment for our Craigs Investment Partners Academy players was fantastic. The Northern Knights players welcoming nature and guidance at the sessions also needs to be acknowledged.

We also adopted a new ‘graduation’ process for the presentation of the Academy baggy caps. Four players with a minimum of two years in the Academy were hand-picked to interview for ‘earning this right’. Each player was formally interviewed with the Academy manager and an independent person present. They had to draw their ‘Crickfit’ 12 month plan and show a high level of understanding of the benefits to them of four key areas; planning, goal-setting, time management and reporting. This year we presented baggy caps to James Baker, Mitchell Santner, Shane Gadsdon and Tim Seifert.

I once again thank and congratulate Geoff and the Craigs Investment Partners’ team on their continued support of our Academy programme. This year saw a Craigs Investment Partners’ open day held at Seddon Park in October for invited guests. Several Knights’ players assisted in running skill stations and teaching the kids some valuable skills. Grant Bradburn spoke to the guests in the Knights’ dressing room about his experiences as a player and a coach, while the other group had a tour of the media tower. A lot of fun was had by all, and in working with Geoff and Stuart I’m sure next year’s day will be even better.

Finally, another year of learning and assisting our best young players has come to an end. The player depth being created within Northern Districts is exciting, but we do need to keep advancing the Craigs Investment Partners Academy programme to inspire our players to continually improve and be the best they can be.

this year’s academy roll of honour is as follows:

James Baker Northern Knights contracted player

Mitchell Santner Debut for Northern Knights

Joe Carter NZ U19 World Cup Team

Sean Davey NZ U19 World Cup Team

Ben Hyde NZ U19 World Cup Squad

Northern Districts Cricket farewelled two of its most recognisable District Association personalities in 2011/12.

ROyCE RIORDANRoyce, a life member of Counties Manukau Cricket passed away in November 2011, aged 74.

Royce contributed over 30 years to the administration of Counties Manukau Cricket. He was Chairman from 1983 to 1991 and President from 1991-2009.

Royce also managed the Counties Manukau men’s rep team for 20 years.

An undoubted highlight of Royce’s long involvement in cricket was when he was awarded the prestigious ICC Centenary Medal in 2009. Only 50 New Zealanders were awarded the medal, which recognised long and outstanding service to the game of cricket.

JOHN HEIKELLIn reporting John’s death in January 2012, the Gisborne Herald lamented the passing of a “sporting and community icon.” He was a life member of both the Poverty Bay Rugby Union and the Poverty Bay Cricket Association. He was also a sports journalist and radio commentator for both codes.

John was also honoured by the ICC with the awarding of an ICC Centenary Medal in 2009. The award recognised more than 40 years of contribution to cricket as a player (he represented Poverty Bay in the 1960s and 1970s as a wicketkeeper), coach, umpire, committee member, chairman, president, and patron of the PBCA, and as a journalist and cricket historian.

2011-12 SEASONActive umpire and scorer numbers declined slightly during the past season, with most losses occurring within the ranks through work and family commitments. However, this was partly balanced by the welcome addition of new arrivals and former players who see umpiring and scoring as a future pathway for their continued involvement in the game.

The breakdown of numbers within the District Associations is currently: Northland (13), Counties/Manukau (14), Hamilton (11), Waikato/Valley (14), Bay of Plenty (30), and Poverty Bay (13). Of this number, 15 are involved with scoring, with the remainder being involved in umpiring in either a “recreational” or “career pathway” option.

The features of the past season from an umpiring standpoint were:

• Recognition of 4 of our umpires at international and national levels. Tony Hill (Counties Manukau) is on the ICC “elite” panel and continues to perform exceptionally well on the international stage with appointments to Test matches and ODI’s around the world. Ash Mehrotra (Counties Manukau) is on the NZC “A” panel and is developing a consistent reputation for his efforts on field. Aaron Hardie (Bay of Plenty) and David Tidmarsh (Hamilton) are members of the NZC “Reserve“ panel.

These umpires are excellent examples of the progress being made by our “pathway” umpires.

• The next tier of umpires on the ND “ A” panel are appointed to rep fixtures around the region - Fergus Hickey, Brian Dunning, Basil McBurney. They include Shirish Bhimjiyani (BOP), John Dempsey (C/M), Colin Elstob (BOP),Ross Kneebone (Nthland), Lui Els (W/V), Ian Dykes (BOP), Ross Ladyman (BOP), Damian Morrow (Ham), and Carl Mann (C/M).

• The main focus of the NDCUSA is the ongoing recruitment and retention, training, and evaluation of umpires in the Association. From this standpoint we have a group of very active Area Training Officers (ATO’s) around the region. Their communication with the Regional Training Officer (RTO) - Kevin Earl - and Joe Stoupe, as appointments officer, is vital to the development of umpiring throughout all DA’s.

• Umpire exchanges play a major role in the development of all those involved, both between our DA’s, and with our neighbouring MA’s. For example, this season saw exchanges of selected umpires with Central Districts and Auckland. These prove valuable for the development of our top umpiring prospects.

• Placement of local ND umpires as 3rd/4th umpires in a liaison role at ND representative one day and T20 games, to gain experience alongside NZ’s “elite” cricket umpires.

• Ongoing training of Cook Island umpires instigated by ND Cricket and carried out by Colin Elstob. This culminated in the appointment of one of their umpires to the Senior Secondary Schools tournament held in Gisborne.

• Regular and reliable assessments of umpires is a vital part of their training programme. The use of on-line captains reports from rep and club games has assisted in this training role.

From a scorers’ standpoint, Bill Andersson continues in his role as Scorer Training Officer (STO) for ND Cricket. Numbers of registered scorers have increased as a result of his recruitment and training efforts.

In late August, 2011, NDCUSA played host to the NZ Cricket Umpires and Scorers’ Association (NZCUSA) annual conference and AGM. This was held in Mount Maunganui and attracted about 120 delegates from around the country. Many thanks go to special guest speakers Dame Susan Devoy and Gordon Tietjens for their entertaining and informative presentations which contributed to a hugely successful event.

In summary, Northern Districts Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association exists in good heart with an enthusiastic group regularly turning out for club and representative fixtures in the region. A strong relationship with the parent body, ND Cricket and its administrators, is acknowledged as vital for this ongoing development within the NDCUSA.

PLaYER Of tHE YEaR(Sponsored by Yahoo!New Zealand)Brent arnel

This award went to the most outstanding player for Northern Districts in domestic competitions, the HRV Cup Twenty20, the One Day Competition, and the Plunket Shield.

This year’s recipient, Brent Arnel was especially deserving of the award. 10 years ago Brent suffered

such a serious stress fracture that his future as a cricketer was in doubt. Indeed he was unable to bowl at all for 18 months. That he was able to rebuild his career speaks volumes for his dedication and determination.

Since his debut for the Knights in the 2005/06 season, he has been one of the most consistent bowlers in New Zealand 1st class cricket, and he achieved the pinnacle of any young cricketer’s ambition, when he played for his country in test matches.

WOMEN’S CRICKEtER Of tHE YEaR(Sponsored by SWEAT Personal Training Studio)

Morna Nielsen

This award was for the most outstanding Northern Districts’ female cricketer. Performances over the whole season at all levels are taken into account, but impact on the Northern Spirit team’s performance is to be a major consideration.

The award this season went to Morna Nielsen for her achievements, mainly for the Spirit, but also recognising her efforts for the White Ferns against Australia and England.

For the White Ferns Morna took a total of 12 wickets in Twenty20 and ODI’s. Her 4 for 10 in a Twenty20 against England was the highlight, the second best figures ever for a White Fern v England.

For the Spirit, Morna took 11 wickets, her Twenty20 economy rate was a low 4.88 runs per over, and her One Day economy rate was an equally impressive 3.26 runs per over. Morna also averaged 47 with the bat in the Action Cup One Day Competition. Her highest score of 79 was part of a NZ record partnership with Rhiana Vincent, the pair compiling 122 runs for the 7th wicket.

fIELDER Of tHE YEaR

James Marshall

James Marshall once again set the benchmark for fielding for the Knights. He not only achieved 8 dismissals through catches and runouts, but was a constant threat to batsman with his lively fielding. James’ value in the field went beyond mere statistics as he provided an inspirational example for his team and placed a lot of pressure on opposition batsmen.

He has now taken 94 catches in 1st class matches for ND.

BOWLER Of tHE YEaR

Brent arnelOur BLACKCAPS bowlers made a significant impact when available. Our Tim Southee took 7 for 37 against Wellington in the Plunket Shield and was our top Twenty20 bowler with 11 wickets. Trent Boult took 23 wickets in the Plunket Shield. But taken over the whole

season there were two main candidates for this award.

There has never been a closer contest for a player award than this. The two work horses of the ND bowling attack, Graeme Aldridge and Brent Arnel, both finished the season with a total of 43 wickets in the three formats. Graeme bowled 324 overs in the season, Brent 348. Both featured in 9 of the 10 Plunket Shield games. Pace bowling is an activity where injuries are common place and inevitable, so the durability of both bowlers is testament to their preparation and fitness. Both worked incredibly hard to maintain their fitness and form over the whole season. And both played games for the BLACKCAPS this season, Graeme on the Zimbabwe tour and Brent against South Africa.

As a tiebreaker, Brent’s 36 wickets in our Plunket Shield campaign (Graeme took 28) gave Brent the edge.

BatSMaN Of tHE YEaR

Hamish Marshall

There were some outstanding individual performances during the season. Kane Williamson continues to grow in stature as an international batsman and provided a new ND record score of 284 not out in his only first class innings of the season

for ND.

Daniel Flynn was injured for much of the season, but recovered to score three centuries in consecutive games for the Knights and earn a recall to the BLACKCAPS. BJ Watling, reinvented as a wicketkeeper batsman, averaged 69 in the Plunket Shield from his half dozen innings. And don’t forget Dan Vettori’s 99 v Australia in a Test match.

However, all three players made only short term appearances for the Knights or had limited impact on the T20 competition.

Easily the most consistent batsman for the Knights in all three formats was Hamish Marshall.

Hamish was our top run scorer in both T20 and One Day formats. He scored 222 runs at an average of 37 per innings in the T20 and 297 runs at 42 in the Ford Trophy. He also scored almost 500 runs at an average of 44 in the Plunket Shield. Only Daniel Flynn had a higher average in the 4 day games.

Hamish was the only Knights’ batsman to score over 1000 runs in the season. For his consistency he earns the Batsman of the year award.

YOUNG CRICKEtER Of tHE YEaR

Daryl Mitchell

This is presented to the most outstanding male cricketer under the age of 21. This trophy can be won only once. Daryl returned to NZ this season to take up

a Knights’ contract after a number of years living and playing in Perth. Previously, he had been an ND Age Group representative at Primary and U15 levels.

This season, representing Waikato Valley, Daryl has been one of the top performers in the Fergus Hickey competition, scoring centuries against Counties Manukau, and Hamilton, averaging 58 runs per innings, and also taking 16 wickets. For ND A he had 17 innings, scoring 522 runs at an average of 32.

Daryl made his debut for the Northern Knights in both one day and four day formats. He played six games in the Ford Trophy scoring 141 runs at an average of 28.2, with a highest score of 48.

He made his 1st class debut against Auckland as a final day replacement when Daniel Flynn left to join the BLACKCAPS. Unfortunately rain disrupted play and he only fielded on the last day. He was then selected for the Knights’ final Plunket Shield game against Central Districts. Daryl showed that he is ready to step up to 1st class cricket by scoring 42 in the second innings and taking 2 for 29 with his medium pacers.

MEN’S a tEaM PLaYER Of tHE YEaR

Brett Hampton

This is an award that recognises the efforts of players in the Northern Districts A team.

Brett began the season as a pace bowler who had also shown some ability with the bat. By the end of the season his batting had developed so much that he could

be classified as a genuine all rounder.

Brett played 15 games for ND A scoring 474 runs at an average of almost 34, with a highest score of 82. He took 22 wickets at an average of 22 runs per wicket. He was rewarded for his progress by being included in the Knights HRV Cup squad, making his debut in the last game v Otago.

Brett is a very powerful striker of the ball. A lasting memory for many Knights and A players is a shot during a trial match that landed on the roof of the Seddon Park stand, a feat previously accomplished only by Graham Hick.

Brett finished the season by scoring a match winning 96 in the Bay of Plenty club final.

DIStRICt aSSOCIatION PLaYER Of tHE YEaR

Brandon Hiini

This award recognises the achievement of players at District Association level in the Fergus Hickey and Brian Dunning competitions. Opposing team captains award

points on a 3,2,1 basis to the best players in each game.

Brandon moved to Northern Districts this season, after previously representing Canterbury. He had immediate impact at Fergus Hickey level, being judged player of the match by opposing captains on no fewer than five occasions.

For Counties Manukau he scored 335 runs at an average of 41 with a highest score of 93, and took 19 wickets at an average of 22 runs per wicket. This consistency enabled Brandon, with 17 points, to head off Daryl Mitchell, with 16 points, for the District Association Player of the year award.

Nick Kelly

Craigs Investment Partners sponsor Northern Districts’ High Performance Development Academy. Players in the academy are the most promising young players in Northern Districts, ranging in age from 15-19. This award recognises a player who has achieved at National Level, who has shown commitment to the programme, and who has made significant progress in his time in the Academy.

Nick is an all rounder, who bowls left arm orthodox spin.

He made outstanding progress this year. He performed well in games for

Counties Manukau in the Fergus Hickey competition and his consistent batting form in the NZ U19 trials, including a century together with his useful bowling, saw him selected in the NZ U19 team to play in an U19 quadrangular tournament with India, Australia, and England in Australia in April.

UMPIRE Of tHE YEaR

David tidmarsh

David took up umpiring after a successful playing career that included 3 first class appearances for Northern Districts. David’s performances in the 2011/12 season saw him rated as ND’s top District Association representative umpire. Captains’ reports show a real confidence in his decision making and onfield management skills.
