University of Otago College of Education 16 Annual Report 2011
Māori Strategic Framework
2011 saw the loss of two staff members responsible for the delivery of Māori specific papers at the beginning of the year and a further staff member at the end. Ngā mihi ki a ratou. Ma tatou e tono atu ki a ratou i o tatou nei aroha, mamae hoki. However the establishment of a Senior Lecture of Māori position promises a positive move towards the continued development of Māori within the College of Education environment from both a research perspective and collegial development. 2011 also saw the implementation of the revised papers of Māori into the Bachelor of Education courses -specifically EDPR 151, 251 351 ( Te Pōkai Mātauranga o te Ao Rua) and EDPR 131 231 and 331 (Primary). Some concerns arose amongst staff regarding the lower number of contact hours but worked very well together to provide a programme for each one to meet the learning aims of each course and meet the university requirement of a 12 credit course. Further reflection is necessary in early 2012 to investigate more hours of contact or removal of some aims in the courses as they are still the same as the original papers. The marae graduation in Southland for students who show a commitment to and involvement in kaupapa Māori throughout their training was once again a huge success for 2011. It maintained the concepts of manaakitanga, whanaungatanga, and the tikanga that upholds the mana of the graduate and their families. This was held once more at Te Rau Aroha with the students more involved in the organisation and management of the event. The Te Pokai Matauranga programme continues to expand and provide opportunities to develop effective teachers for mainstream and immersion classes. Second year students have taken the opportunity to be placed in schools outside of Otago and Southland to experience bilingual, immersion and mainstream classes for practicum. This year saw two students placed in Palmerston North and another in Auckland. Discussions were implemented with Te Tumu in relation to the development of a Māori Studies pathway for the Bachelor of Education Studies. This included management and staff from both the College of Education and Te Tumu. Ideas were discussed and links made for future discussions in early 2012. 2012 promises to be another year of growth and development as the College of Education continues to refine and develop Māori in their programmes.
Staffing Fifteen academic staff positions were affected by the Management of Change in 2010, and were either disestablished or reduced. These redundancies continue to affect the College with staff leaving throughout 2011 and with a number of staff still to finish in mid 2012. New staff members appointed
