Transcript of Annual Report 2011 - The Community Foundation
The Community Foundationof theRappahannock River Region
Annual Report 2010–2011
The Community Foundation is a non-profit organization that manages and distributes charitable giving in the Rappahannock River region. Our goal is to promote greater philanthropy by addressing the challenges faced by donors in a responsible and knowledgeable manner. We distinguish ourselves from other local charities by providing efficient and effective services to build a collection of permanent funds.
11
Who is the The Community Foundation?
As you read through this Annual Report you will be able to see that The Community Foundation is distinctive. No other nonprofit organization in our area is helping donors support the one – or many – aspects of our community they deem to be most vital: be it the arts, the environment, a university or a
social issue. And no other organization around can continue this important work, anonymously or in a donor’s name, long after they are gone.
Our report illustrates how The Community Foundation is doing more than ever to ensure that the issues and causes most important to our donors are never overlooked. As we assume the challenges of making charitable gifts, we allow donors to focus directly on the needs of the Rappahannock River region, and beyond.
In our 2011 fiscal year, a variety of strategically planned initiatives began to come to fruition. Our newly hired staff Certified Public Accountant and Program Officer brought advancements to our fund management and donor service capabilities. We increased grantmaking due diligence and made readily available technical assistance for area charities seeking funding. We began to see the results of our first multi-million dollar gift – the bequest of Duff McDuff Green, Jr. – when we granted $112,000 to area nonprofits. By 2020 this fund alone will grant out over $1,000.000.
In 2011, The Community Foundation gifts awarded on behalf of area donors reached an impressive $474,202. Total assets under management grew to over $8 million by June 30, 2011 and contributions to the foundation were $582,453.
On behalf of our Board and staff, we extend our sincere thanks to the many gracious donors who practice inspired giving through funds established at The Community Foundation. Thank you for entrusting your charitable legacy to us.
We are continually innovating the way we do business, but the foundation’s central purpose holds true: to support the charitable goals of generous people who want to invest in the Rappahannock River region – now and in perpetuity. As The Community Foundation offers new opportunities to give, we can expect to increase the vibrancy and resiliency of our region.
We welcome you to join us – to be The Community Foundation.
Sincerely,
Mona Albertine Teri McNallyPresident Executive Director
Mona Albertine, President
“The Community Foundation enables me to honor my late husband Bob O’Neill and have a voice in where my donations go.”
Bob spent much of his career as a quiet force creating and supporting many of the organizations that make our region so special. He would want that legacy to continue.
My name is Mary Jane O’Neill and I am The Community Foundation.

You are The Community Foundation
We are The Community Foundation
Giving through the Community Foundation is easy. We offer a wide range of gifting options that you can use to establish or add to a named charitable fund. Since we are recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a public charity, you are
provided with the maximum tax benefits allowed by law. You may add to a fund at any time and in any amount.
Gifts of cash, securities, real estate and life insurance can be used to establish a fund. Funds may be used to honor a living person; memorialize deceased persons or to commemorate anniversaries and other special events.
You might choose to leave charitable assets to a Community Foundation fund in your will. After assuring that loved ones have been cared for, donors use a variety of assets such as pension plans, life insurance or the proceeds from the sale of a house, for charitable purposes.
Your gift can be used to accomplish almost any charitable goal, including: establishing a scholarship fund, creating an endowment for a particular charity or cause, or leaving a family legacy that allows your children to continue the tradition of charitable grantmaking.
Bev NewlinFormer board president Bev Newlin and her husband, Don, initiated a matching grant to support immediate needs in the community.
Harry DickinsonFounding board member Harry Dickinson and his family have two funds and he continues to work tirelessly at the foundation.
The Community Foundation of the Rappahannock River Region is a nonprofit, public charity established by local community leaders for the people of Stafford, Spotsylvania, King George, and Caroline Counties and the City of Fredericksburg.
We are a collection of many different charitable funds, each separately accounted for, and each with its own design and purpose. A typical fund is established with a gift that is invested in perpetuity and the earning are used to make annual grants. We distribute grants from those funds throughout the Rappahannock River region.
Our mission is to build a better community by promoting philanthropy through creative donor services. Since 1997, The Community Foundation has been helping individual donors realize their charitable dreams.
We’re here to provide a simple, powerful and highly personal approach to giving. We do this by offering a variety of giving tools to help people achieve their charitable goals and do good work that lasts forever within our communities.

The Community Foundation Funds
Mary Wynn McDanielThrough her foundation fund, Mary Wynn McDaniel provided scholarships to deserving young students in southwestern Virginia at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise.
Unrestricted FundsThink BroadlyDonors who contribute to the foundation’s Community Enrichment Fund or establish their own unrestricted fund can participate in The Community Foundation’s annual competitive grants program. These donors can support a broad range of local concerns, including fast-emerging issues and future needs that we can’t yet anticipate. These flexible funds put the responsibility of identifying community needs and researching and selecting worthy charities on to the foundation, relieving donors of these challenges.

Donor Advised FundsStay InvolvedDonor Advised Funds provide a simple, powerful and very personal approach to giving. Donors stay actively involved in suggesting uses for their gifts. Donors can recommend charities to support at any time during the year, or work with Foundation staff to identify which community nonprofits are doing the best work on the issues most important to the donor.

Scholarship FundsInvest in Deserving StudentsDonors help students achieve their dreams through education by establishing or contribu ting to a scholarship fund. Community Foundation staff help donors establish guidelines for students to apply for financial assistance through the fund. Scholarship eligibility might be based on a student’s achievement or a demonstration of financial need. Some scholarships focus on community involvement, a commitment to a particular field of study or demonstration of leadership ability. Some donors choose to meet or correspond with students after the selection process is complete.

Field of Interest FundsAddress Important IssuesDonors who establish a Field of Interest Fund target their gift to address a specific area of need. Whatever areas of interest inspire you to contribute – the arts, access to healthcare, the environment, etc. – The Community Foundation can assist in establishing a fund and recommending strategic gifts to address the causes you care about most.

Community Foundation FundsNumerous DonorsIn our work with donors and charities across the region, we sometimes identify larger issues and opportunities that merit the community’s attention. In these cases we create the appropriate fund to harness the charitable power of many individual donors to help address the issue or opportunity.

“My life has been forever changed by the death of our son in a senseless act of teen violence.”
I feel the loss of every mother and father who has endured suffering brought on by a violent act against their child. We created the annual Baron P. Braswell II Run/Walk Against Teen Violence to stir the community into action.
I am Gwendolyn Braswell-Nash and I am The Community Foundation.
We research, debate and award grants to worthy charities, tackling issues that are important to young people. Along the way we learn leadership and presentation skills, manage budgets and study the feasibility of proposals. We take our responsibility very seriously and also have a lot of fun.
We are Youth In Philanthropy and we are The Community Foundation.
“Through YIP, we are making a difference in issues such as teen pregnancy, homelessness, domestic violence, sexual assault and more.”
