Bothprogramstreams,AdaptiveRecreationandWildernessSchool,achievedincrediblemilestonesin2011.TheWildernessSchoolcelebrateditsgraduatingclasshostedbytheHonorableLieutenantGovernorStevenL.PointattheGovernmentHouse.AdaptiveRecreationgrewsubstantiallyinVictoriaandtheLowerMainlandwithnewprogramsforthedeafandhardofhearing,youthlivingwithtype1diabetes,andtheVictoriaImmigrantandRefugeeCentreSociety.

2011markedsignificantachievements,butalsogreatbeginnings.UndertheBoard’sdirection,PowerToBeinvestedmorestaffresourcesintooperationstosupportexcitingprogramgrowthforyearstocome.Importantstridesweremadeincommunications,ITandfinancialinfrastructure.

DuringClaudia’sfirstyearasChair,theBoardestablishedthenecessarycommitteestructuretotransitionintoagovernancemodel.ForthefirsttimeinPowerToBe’shistory,theBoardandmanagementteamareworkingonalong-termstrategicplantoensurePowerToBe’sfuturesuccessandsustainability.

BeingaDirectoratPowerToBerequirespassionandastrongcommitmenttoserveourmission.WewanttoacknowledgetheenormouscontributionofthreeretiringDirectorswhoservedontheBoardwithdistinction;MichaelDingle,ourpastChair,TimMaloneywhochairedmanycommitteesandservedsevenyearswiththeBoardandSarahCormodeforherinvaluableProgramCommitteeinsights.Theircontributionscannotbeoverstated.

Adaptive Recreation Program

AdaptiveRecreationoffersinclusivenature-basedrecreationactivitiesforpeoplelivingwithabarrierordisability.PowerToBecombinesanability-centeredperspectiveandthebenefitsofnaturetostrengthenpeople’sconnectionswiththemselves,theircommunitiesandtheirsurroundings.

AdaptiveRecreationprogramsserveyouthwithautism,familieslivingwithanacquiredbraininjury,youthwhoaredeaforhardofhearing,peoplelivingwithtype1diabetes,cancersurvivors,andthosewithavarietyofotherdevelopmental,cognitiveandphysicaldisabilities.

This was our best family excursion ever and I want to thank you for inviting us and putting everything in place for an amazing weekend of surfing and fun. I cannot tell you in words how comfortable you made us all feel, and just the fact that this was a family adventure made it so special.

You understand the obstacles facing individuals with developmental delays and strive to provide unique opportunities that are customized to each person’s abilities and challenges. It is a rare opportunity that includes the whole family; it really is the ultimate definition of inclusion.”

TheWildernessSchoolfosterspositivesocialdevelopmentandlifeskillsforarangeofyouthlivinginourcommunity.Adventurousweekendprogramsareofferedeverymonth,andmulti-dayexpeditionseachsummer.Participantsengageinleadershipactivities,connectwiththewildernessanddeveloptheircommunicationskills.Themulti-yearprograminstillsconfidence,createsstabilityandbuildsstructuresothattheyouthhavethetoolstosucceedinschool,athomeandintheircommunities.

2011wasarobustfinancialyearlargelydueto23%growthinrevenuewhileexhibitingadisciplinedapproachtoexpenditures.Whilespendingonlyincreasedby10%over2010,programmaticoutputincreasedby14%.Thiswasachievedthroughinnovativecollaboration,andthegenerosityofdonors,volunteersandcommunitypartners.

PowerToBefocusedondevelopingtheintegrityoftheorganizationin2011byinvestingtimeandresourcesintothesystemsthatsupportprogramdeliverysuchasIT,equipment,communicationresourcesandfinancialpractices.Additionally,predictablesourcesoffundingthroughmulti-yearcorporatesponsorscontinuedtorise,endingtheyearwithanetsurplus,ensuringthesustainabilityofservicestoyouthandfamiliesinneedofoursupportismaintained.
