President’s Message

It’s an exciting time for A-B Tech Community College.

As one of the larger employers in the county, we provide

more than 1,000 jobs directly through faculty and staff

positions. Now we are about to embark on construction of

new and renovated facilities at the College.

An Allied Health and Workforce Development Building,

funded by a local sales tax, will create about another 1,000

jobs over the next 24-30 months through the hiring of

construction workers, electrical and plumbing specialists

and many other builders.

We are building 21st century facilities to train our students

for 21st century jobs. This building will help us improve existing Allied Health

programs and allow us to add programs in the future.

Since the College’s founding in 1959, A-B Tech has trained more than 8,500

employees for the health care industry. We have trained first responders, skilled

trade workers, hospitality employees and computer-related workers employed

here in our mountains – and we will continue to do so through innovative programs

and constantly asking what the community needs from A-B Tech.

Dr. Hank Dunn

Putting the People of Western North Carolina to Work

“Graduating from A-B Tech changed my life.”

I am honored to have been elected to chair the Board of Trustees this year. I’m also flattered to serve on our College Foundation Board

which serves such a vital function for A-B Tech.

My first association with this great institution goes back to the early ‘60s when my late

father was employed here. He started as an English instructor and taught technical

writing, English, and accounting prior to his retirement in 1973. When I started my

career in manufacturing, I became an advisory committee member for the Business

Administration Department in the early ‘70s.

In the early years of my career as Human Resources Manager at Square D Company,

A-B Tech didn’t offer many of the disciplines it does today. We’ve changed with the

times and must continue to change if we are to be world class. This correlates with

what we focus on regarding being responsive to customer needs. Over the years the

demand for job-based skills has always existed, but the types of skills required have

changed dramatically.

When we hired people in the manufacturing world, we hired very qualified graduates

from the Engineering and Applied Technology Division – as well as from other

disciplines – because we were a very technically-oriented company. We found that A-B Tech

graduates brought superior skills to the workplace. This still holds true today. An A-B Tech graduate

is always well prepared to enter the working world.

A-B Tech is an essential component of the community from the standpoint that our mission is to

provide education to develop skills to prepare people for the job market, and to enhance the skills

of people who are already in the job market. I see that as a significant and continuing role for us in

the community.

We also have a responsibility to stay abreast of cutting-edge educational techniques and course

content requirements that we offer. Additionally, to be world-class and successful, we must always

listen to our customers – the employers who hire A-B Tech graduates. We must always build our

curricula around what our customers need. That customer focus is so important, and in that respect

we are a partner with the community – the employers who hire our graduates and the graduates

themselves who will use their A-B Tech learned skills in the workplace.

An A-B Tech graduate is always well prepared to enter the working world.

Richard Hurley, Chair

A-B Tech’s Board of Trustees adopted a new mission statement

for the College, emphasizing the critical role it plays in the area’s

economic development.

Over a three-month period, more than 75 faculty, staff, students

and members of the A-B Tech Board of Trustees participated in

focus groups to determine the vision, mission and values for the

College. A sub-group of 20 met twice to narrow the options and

collectively came up with Vision, Mission and Values statements,

which were approved by the Board of Trustees on February 6, 2012.

Student Success InitiativesSignifying a commitment to student success and institutional improvement, A-B Tech Community

College joined Achieving the Dream, a national non-profit that is dedicated to helping more community

college students and students of color stay in school and earn a college certificate

or degree. Achieving the Dream will help A-B Tech broaden its knowledge of

programs, services and policies that lead to student success and systematically

implement those best practices.

The college success text “On Course: Strategies for Success in College and Life”

by Skip Downing forms the basis for both of A-B Tech’s first-year seminar courses.

Students explore the choices of successful students, assess their learning styles and effective skill levels,

and plan for program completion and graduation. Each course introduces students to all of the resources

at A-B Tech Community College. Incoming students register for one of the two first-semester courses

when they meet with an academic advisor.

Thanks to voter approval of a quarter-cent sales tax increase Nov. 8, 2011, A-B Tech has embarked on a major construction campaign that will provide 21st century facilities to train students for 21st century jobs. The sales tax will provide $129 million for the following A-B Tech construction and renovation projects:

• Construction of Allied Health and Workforce Development Building

• Construction of Buncombe County Public Service Training Facility

Classroom Building

• Renovations at the College’s Enka site

• Campus Sidewalks, Parking Lots and Signage

• Purchase and renovation of 93 Victoria Road

Entrepreneurial Development Foundation and Entrepreneurial InstituteA-B Tech Community College created an Educational and Entrepreneurial Development Foundation

to grow businesses and create jobs in the region by enhancing and promoting existing entrepreneurial

support activities of the College and other community groups.

According to Marilyn McDonald, the Foundation’s Executive Director, the Foundation is one of

a few in community colleges across the nation that focuses on entrepreneurship. “We are taking an

innovative approach. As funds from the state diminish, the College will be prepared for the long-term by

investing in great ideas and supporting the creation of new companies in Western North Carolina.”

The first major initiative of the Foundation is Blazemark Labs, LLC, a mentorship driven, 12-week

accelerator program for companies ready for the seed stage. Blazemark will accept a cohort of 10

companies to participate in the intensive program, which will launch in summer 2013.

Projects in development by the Foundation include a Hacker Space to provide programmers with the

software, equipment, and specialized training to elevate skills in the regional technology workforce and

an Institute for Professional Studies to offer training opportunities for higher-level certifications.

Job BoardA-B Tech launched a job-posting website to help area employers

fill vacancies and the area’s residents find jobs.

Job Board supports employers in area counties by providing free

listings accessible to job seekers 24 hours a day, seven days a

week. Users create an account with Job Board via the A-B Tech

website and apply for jobs or post job openings.

A-B Tech Community College was one of 16 community colleges in the

state to be recognized for exceptional performance for the 2010-11

school year by the North Carolina Community College System.

The NC Community College System evaluates the performance of

each of its 58 colleges in seven core areas. To obtain Exceptional

status, colleges must meet or exceed all standards. Their students

must also meet or exceed the performance rates of native UNC system

students and achieve at least a 70 percent first-time passing rate on

all state licensure and certification exams.

A-B Tech students had the second-highest passing rates in the state

on licensing and certification exams, at 95 percent.

Skills Gap Symposium

As part of its efforts to boost the area’s economic development, the College hosted a Skills Gap

Symposium to gather information from area employers on the skills they need in their workplace. The

event was co-sponsored by the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce, the Economic Development

Coalition of Asheville-Buncombe County and UNC Asheville.

Nearly 100 employers gathered at the Haynes Center at A-B Tech’s Enka site to identify skills gaps and

discuss how to increase their pool of qualified applicants. During the event, employers identified basic soft

skills as a lacking ability in many applicants, and cited the need for applicants who understand attendance,

good quality, a basic understanding of economics, along with problem-solving skills.

Outreach to Students and BusinessesA-B Tech has a strategic and intentional focus on enrollment management and a student outreach plan

aligned with the College mission and strategic objectives.

It includes the Student Services division incorporating the Career Pathways Program, a Diversity Recruiter

position, five Recruiters/High School Liaisons and Director working as a team.

Because the biggest obstacle to college completion for many students is a lack of financial resources,

a focus on expanded financial aid enrollment scholarship opportunities and better information about

financial aid is available to promote successful recruitment and retention of a diverse student body.

Recruiters work in a coordinated effort to attend GED classes to meet with students on an individual

basis to encourage them to proceed with credit classes in curriculum programs.

A-B Tech has strengthened its Economic and Workforce Development program by adding resources to

expand its outreach efforts to include all sizes of businesses.

“The benefit is businesses are able to receive the training they need at a

convenient time and in a convenient format. We are able to address the needs

of smaller businesses the same way we always did for the larger industries,”

said Cynthia Hamilton, Director of Economic and Workforce Development.

A-B Tech offers training either at the College or on-site at the business in

computer skills, safety classes, leadership, customer service and industry-

specific training. The intent is to support a larger variety of industries including

health care, hospitality, government, manufacturing, general business and the

burgeoning craft beverage industry.

New Website and LogoThe College launched a redesigned website to enable various segments of the population to easily

navigate to the areas specifically needed. By creating sections for current, future and

continuing education students, as well as for the business community, alumni and friends

and faculty and staff, website users are able to quickly steer through the clean design to

pinpoint the pertinent information.

The words Community College were added to A-B Tech’s logo to help people better

understand the comprehensive nature of the college.

A-B Tech was a pilot college for the North Carolina Community College System

to implement the redesign of Developmental Math (DMA).

Through the use of their creative strengths, the full-time faculty uses active learning strategies coupled

with work force/On Course language to fully engage developmental students.

From the input of the professional advisors in Student Services to the faculty in Arts and Science, the

DMA modules have grown to accommodate a variety of scheduling options. A-B Tech offers the modules

in two-week, three-week, and traditional four-week formats depending on the semester a student enrolls

in a DMA module.

The numbers from the first implementation show that of the 555 students enrolled in the DMA modules,

88.6% successfully completed the modules. The numbers from fall 2012 show that A-B Tech served 1,791

developmental students with an 85% success rate.

Each redesigned course will enhance the Completion Agenda and promote the success of students

across the curriculum at A-B Tech. Each course is supported through an online homework management

system and all course materials are supported through the College’s online learning platform, Moodle.

Strategic PlanThe College implemented a strategic plan with priorities to improve

A-B Tech for students, employees and the community. Priorities

include creating the necessary technology infrastructure that

supports both students and the community, and strengthening

community relationships through marketing that promotes the range

of programs, services and events available.

Highlights

A-B Tech Community College reopened the Hemlock Building on the Asheville campus after

closing it due to lead contamination from the first-floor firing range. The building previously

housed A-B Tech’s Emergency Services Academy and other Allied Health and Public Service

Education programs.

The building was cleaned from top to bottom and the HVAC systems, floors, ceilings and

paint were replaced. Community Enrichment, GED, Human Resources Development, English

as a Second Language and Compensatory Education, which were located in the Pines/

Madonna Building, relocated to the Hemlock Building and started classes in October 2012.

A-B Tech students Tiffany McDowell and Jeremy Jackson are the first recipients of the 100 Men and

Women Minority Scholarship awarded through the College’s Foundation.

Established by Samuel Abdul-Allah and Johnnie Grant, the scholarship provided two $1,000

scholarships for the 2012-13 academic year. Additional funds were contributed by community

members who wanted to provide educational opportunities for African-American students enrolled

in curriculum programs at A-B Tech.

Abdul-Allah was inspired to start the scholarship

after listening to a radio show discussing the

disparity in jobs, quality of life and education

between African-Americans and Caucasians. “We

needed to get something done rather than talk

about it. We set up the scholarship to close that

gap,” he said. “We were told about students

already here (at A-B Tech) that needed the help.”

McDowell enrolled in the Dental Hygiene degree

program after graduating with her diploma in Dental

Assisting this past May. As part of her education,

she works at the A-B Tech Dental Clinic, which

is celebrating its 40th year of providing low-cost

dental care.

“As part of a dental health care team, I plan to

provide the community with exceptional patient care

and patient education. I would also like to take part

in volunteer opportunities within the community

when they present themselves,” McDowell said.

Jackson is enrolled in the College Transfer program,

plans to graduate in May 2013, and then enroll in a four-year college to pursue a bachelor’s degree in

exercise psychology. He is also an active member of the Minority Student Leadership Academy at A-B

Tech and volunteers with the Developing Future Male Leaders program, where he mentors elementary

school-age children.

“I like to motivate and inspire youth. youth are the heart of the community, so I plan to encourage them

to get a superior education. I want to ensure our youth remain in school, graduate, and enroll in college.

My aim is to mentor future generations,” Jackson said.

Guests at the second annual April in Asheville gala

spent a fun-filled evening enjoying the Culinary Arts

and Hospitality Management’s take on a “Picnic on

the Parkway.”

Proceeds from this event provide scholarships for A-B

Tech students. Funding for college can be a deciding

factor in determining if students can continue with their

education to make a better life for themselves and

their families, or if they can re-enter the workforce and

contribute to the local economy.

A portion of the proceeds also goes to support the

amazing work of our nationally-recognized Culinary Arts

and Hospitality Management programs.

Thank you to all the local businesses, community

volunteers, staff, faculty and students who contributed

to the success of this event.

“Thank you” seems inadequate to express my gratitude in being a recipient of the Lavender Fund Scholarship. I am honored and humbled. This award is an extraordinary gift to me and my daughter. She and I started “school” together, me at A-B Tech

and [she] in Head Start at Asheville City Preschool. I am thrilled to be able to set an educational example for her. This award gets me one step closer to my goal of graduation. I will be the first woman in my family to earn a college degree. Thank you for believing in me and trusting me with this gift.

This [Lavender Fund] scholarship is important to me because I am a single mother of three and financially it is difficult for me to attend school and still be able to provide for my family. This has given me the opportunity to show them that education is the key and

no matter what age you are it is never too late to pursue a career. Words cannot express how appreciative I am of receiving this scholarship.

Major: Cosmetology Scholarship: Wells Fargo Project New FuturesI was in the restaurant business for many years achieving sommelier certifications and running the second largest wine list in North and South Carolina. I loved what I was doing, but it did not afford me much time with my three daughters. The restaurant where I was working was officially closed in May 2011. I searched for another position, but could not find one in which I would still be accessible to my daughters, and each position I did find all came with a substantial cut in pay. As a single mother I had to make a decision to return to school which has been a little scary, but has helped my family considerably. I enrolled in the cosmetology program at A-B Tech, which I began in the fall of 2011. At the moment, I am considering school my career and devoting the time necessary to learn everything I can from this experience.

My short term academic goals are to complete the cosmetology program with an associate’s degree and maintain my current GPA of 4.0. I want to continue my education after graduation in an effort to feed my love and knowledge of the field. I also want to build relationships with my clients, while building a dependable clientele for myself. I hope to eventually have a successful business of my own. I also

hope that through my being more available to my daughters, that I will be able to support them in their journeys to success.

Another dream of mine has been to assist Main Stay with their program to find jobs for single mothers. I have made donations and volunteered with them in the past, but it would be wonderful to be able to provide more than a suit for a job interview. Sometimes a haircut can boost someone’s confidence where words cannot.

Major: Associates Degree Nursing Scholarship: Madison County FundI have a five year old daughter that I have had sole custody of since she was born. I have never received any child support. My last job was at Meadowbrook Family Care Home where I worked as a live-in caregiver/supervisor for three and a half years. Prior to that, I worked at MAHEC Family Health Center for seven years as a Business Office Specialist. I am trying to improve our lives by going back to school.

My short term goal is to complete each semester of the Associate Degree Nursing program with the highest grades possible. I hope to continue to achieve a 4.0 GPA. My long term career goal, after I graduate from A-B Tech, is to find full time employment as a nurse while continuing my education to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Once I am established in my career, in five to 10 years, I plan to volunteer not only as a nurse but in other ways as well to help my community such as homeless shelters, and through my church as it is deeply involved in community outreach. I also plan to volunteer where I can be used for disaster and mission trips, not only in the United States, but outside of the country as well.

Quotes of Appreciation – Lavender Fund Scholarship Students 2012-13

Major: College Transfer (Associate Degree Science) Scholarship: Shapiro-Green Endowed Scholarship

I am currently employed at the yWCA of Asheville as a lifeguard, a swim instructor assistant, and a gym attendant. I work roughly 21 hours per week. I absolutely love what I do. Before employment at the yWCA, I worked for the U.S. Forest Service as a lifeguard at Sliding Rock for a full summer.

My short term goals are to graduate from A-B Tech with an Associate of Science. I plan to transfer to Appalachian State University where I will major in exercise science and minor in nutrition. While I am still enrolled in A-B Tech, I also plan to become a certified personal trainer and a fitness counselor.

My long term goals are to join the health division of the Air Force with a solid foundation in physiology and well-balanced nutrition. I would like to improve our nation’s defense by advising about the best possible healthy lifestyles. I plan to spend several summers with the National Outdoor Leadership School and gain the certifications to teach backpacking skills, wilderness first-aid courses, and careful use of the environment. My greatest dream is to help improve the health of our nation and environmental resourcefulness.

With the knowledge I will gain by continuing my education in exercise and nutrition, I strongly desire to improve our community’s health statistics. Especially for women, I think it is important for people to know that they are strong, capable, and beautiful. I truly believe that a happy, healthy body is one of the first steps in creating a happy, loving community.
