Annual Report 2009 v2 - HFS Chicago Scholars€¦ · his class and captain of the football team....

4
HFS Chicago Scholars assists economically disadvantaged Chicago inner-city high school students who show academic and leadership promise achieve their educational goals by providing financial assistance and men- toring. We provide the following to our scholars: financial assistance to attend top Chicago private high schools; award-winning academic directors and one-on-one mentors; a four-year written commitment specifying per- formance expectations; and college selection and admissions support. Through the generous contributions of foundations, corporations and individuals, HFS Chicago Scholars is able to offer opportunities to economically disadvantaged Chicago -area high school students who show academic and leadership promise. HFS Chicago Scholars believes that our continued success demands that we find ways to open doors for more Chicago kids. Contact the HFS Chicago Scholars office to discuss the ways that you can impact the life of a high school student. Donor Sponsor: Donors are the lifeblood of our organization. We depend on financial support from individuals and companies to support scholar- ships and our academic and cultural enrichment programs. Every dollar goes directly to the program to benefit our scholars and mentors. We can transport our entire group of scholars for a one-day event for as little as $250 or pay for a scholar to take an ACT prep course for $500. No contribution is too small. Scholar Sponsors: Consider becoming a Scholar Sponsor with your contribution of $5,000 or more within a fiscal year. Scholar Sponsors are matched with a specific scholar. The benefit of being a Scholar Sponsor includes receiving periodic updates from HFS regarding the scholar’s progress and receive an invitation to the HFS Chicago Scholars Annual Banquet to meet their scholar and his/her family. Volunteer Mentors: The mentoring program is a cornerstone of the HFS Chicago Scholars. Our mentors provide guidance, assistance and friendship to our scholars, all of whom are embarking on very challenging educational paths. Mentors and scholars meet as a group 10-12 times a year. In addition, mentors stay connected with their scholars regularly via phone or email. Becoming a mentor in the HFS Chi- cago Scholars program is one way to make a direct impact on a young person’s life. Daniel Shepherd, a high school sophomore, attended the National Youth Leadership Forum (NYLF) on Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia for ten days in July 2009. Daniel was nominated by his school and local community group because of his consistent examples of leadership – both inside and outside of the class- room (he carries a 3.80 grade average in honors classes). Daniel stayed in the dormitories at Emory University. The forum offered Daniel an intensive insight into the medical field and confirmed his life- long desire – he is set on becoming a doctor. Daniel participated in rotations in a variety of diverse medical specialties including cardiology, neurology, and ophthalmology. During each rotation doctors spoke to the students about their specialized field and walked the students through a typical day and what the doctors would normally see on a daily basis. The Forum participants traveled to five different hospitals during that week and had an opportunity to observe several different types of surgeries. They viewed an open heart surgery, seven colonoscopies, a total knee replace- ment surgery, and a lymph cell surgery. They also learned how to stitch up patients. The presentations and lectures were problem-based, which allowed the students to learn what they should do in certain situations when they become doctors. The doctors also addressed protocol and policies were also taught. Daniel learned about the confidentiality between the patient and the doctor, and about the consequences of not keeping that confidence. The forum instructors also included current medical students. The student instructors provided helpful advice to Daniel about deciding his specialty and making it through the arduous process of medical school. According to Daniel, “my instructor was very knowledgeable and had tons of different degrees, but he told me it was important to stay balanced away from school too. He said that ‘if you don’t balance and you don’t have fun, medical school will stress you out’, and that is good to know.” Daniel summed up his summer experience: “Overall, attending the NYLF was a great experience. I met many new friends with the same goals as me. I am so glad that I was nominated to take this educational journey. Fu

nd graciously established a partnership with HFS in an effort to

make our one-on-one mentoring program available to more high school students at their schools. This year, Big

Shoulders is providing partial scholarships to HFS sophomores attending Big Shoulders Fund-supported high

schools. The Big Shoulders Fund, long a supporter of HFS, has been a champion for Chicago’s inner-city families

since 1986, raising over $10M a year for Catholic elementary and high schools. HFS Chicago Scholars is honored to

collaborate with Big Shoulders for a second year in support of our scholars.
