Preface

Preface

The Department of Biostatistics is part of the Institute of Public Health, Faculty ofHealth Sciences, University of Copenhagen. The present annual report documents theactivities of the scientific staff during 2009. Hopefully, the report may also serve asan introduction to the department. The report documents research projects, teachingand advisory work, as well as editorial and other organizational activities for thebiostatistical community. The reader will find lists of publications, talks and travels ofthe scientific staff, a list of visitors to the department and a list of talks in our seminarseries.

Annual reports have been published since the start of the department as a researchcouncil initiative in 1978. The present version follows the tradition in many ways, withtwo exceptions: the report is now only in English, and the production has been mod-ernized. The new production process is based on the Semantic Mediawiki Projectand has been implemented by Thomas A. Gerds with technical assistance by Tim F.Olsen and Klaus K. Holst and administrative assistance by Susanne Kragskov, StineSparre Kjær Urhøj, Jeanette Pollmann, Emilie Just-Østergaard and Kathe Jensen.Editorial details have been discussed with Esben Budtz-Jørgensen and Niels Keiding. The annual report is available on the website https://intra.ifsv.ku.dk/biostat_

annualreport/index.php5/Annual_reports which contains electronic search possibil-ities.

The Department of Biostatistics is the biostatistical resource for all parts of theFaculty of Health Sciences, which implies some special features in the daily work of thedepartment. In addition to research and teaching in the department’s core academiccompetence (biostatistics), the scientific staff has an extensive portfolio of collaborativemedical research, advisory and consulting activities at several levels, and an extensiveprogram of teaching of statistics to users within the faculty.

External funding

In 2009, several people were partly financed by external sources. External funding wascoming from NIH (joint project with John Klein) the Graduate School in Biostatisticsfunded by the Danish Research Councils (Niels Keiding leader). Further external fund-ing was coming from several national and international fonds through collaborationwith the following people: Henrik Leffers (Department of Growth and Reproduction,Copenhagen University Hospital, Copenhagen, Denmark), Jesper Møller (Departmentof Mathematical Sciences, Aalborg University, Aalborg, Denmark) Philippe Grand-jean (Environmental Medicine, University of Southern Denmark, Odense, Denmark)Niels Erik Skakkebæk (Department of Growth and Reproduction, Copenhagen Uni-versity Hospital, Copenhagen, Denmark), Lars Vedel Kessing (Department of Psychi-atry, Copenhagen University Hospital, Copenhagen, Denmark), Bent Ottesen (TheJuliane Marie Center, Copenhagen University Hospital, Copenhagen, Denmark), Sig-urd Mikkelsen (Department of Occupational Medicine, Glostrup University Hospital,Glostrup, Denmark), Ulrik Gether (Molecular Neuropharmacology Group, Depart-ment of Pharmacology, University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark)

Research

The department conducts biostatistical research and software development, partici-pates in substantive research projects applying statistical methods, and offers bio-statistical advice to PhD students and staff in all disciplines of the Faculty of HealthSciences, including those engaged in experimental and clinical medicine, public health, and oral health. Furthermore, an important part of the research work is done in shortand long-term collaborations with researchers from outside the Faculty and from allover the world.

In this section the research activities from the year 2009 are listed in the subsec-tions methodological research, applied collaborations and development of statisticalsoftware. Research activity corresponding to the Core Facility of Biostatistics are col-lected in a separate subsection. Further structure is obtained from Keywords (Topics)that have been submitted by the responsible scientific staff for the single projects.

For some projects more information is available at the Internet site of this annualreport.

5 Core facility

The Faculty of Health Sciences has created a Core Facility in Biostatistics led by NielsKeiding. The Core Facility started in 2007 and will run until 2011. The purpose ofthe Core Facility is to conduct independent biostatistical research as well as assistingthe Cluster of Fetal Environmental and Postnatal Disease (lead by Professor AndersJuul, Department of Growth and Reproduction, Rigshospitalet) and the Post-GenomicPublic Health Cluster - GENPUB (lead by Professor Steffen Loft, Department ofEnvironmental Health, Institute of Public Health) with biostatistical tasks.

In 2009, the following people were fully or partly financed by the Core Facility:Thomas Scheike, Thomas Alexander Gerds, Jørgen Holm Petersen, Julie Lyng Forman, and Sara Brebbia. In 2009, part of the work of these people was directly connected tothe Core Facility in Biostatistics.
