From the ethical point of view,

no one can escape responsibility with the excuse

that he is only an individual, on whom

the fate of the world does not depend. Not only can

this not be known objectively for certain,

because it is always possible that it will depend

precisely on the individual, but this kind of thinking

is also made impossible by the

very essence of ethics, by conscience

and the sense of responsibility.

~ Georg Lukacs

At Compassionate Crusaders our actions & activities areconstantly inspired by the revered monk of RamakrishnaMission, Swami Ranganathanandajis saying Are yougrowing spiritually? Can you love others? Do you feeloneness with others? Have you peace within yourself anddo you radiate it around you? That is called spiritual growth, which is stimulated by meditation, inwardly, and by workdone in a spirit of service outwardly. All our workers andvolunteers serve the mutes in a meditative spirit.

Chhoti, a sheltered dog is a living statement of theunrelenting dedication of our workers towards our standon complete unacceptability of subjugation of animalsunder any pretext. Chhoti, a three month old puppy, hadher hind legs crushed under a car and was rescued fromthe road. Now Chhoti is living a life of freedom in spite ofnon functioning hind legs. A custom-made doggy cycle, organized by our workers, for Chhoti is making it possible.

Before CCT came into being, awareness aboutenvironment, animal rights, related human health issueswere all quite vague and sporadic in our country. Nowsome of them have been accepted through legislation byour own country and even other civilized nations. Somemore have reached the highest level of judiciary and thereligious & community leaders.

Metaphysically speaking, evil is the permanent law, andwhat is good is an effort. The two issues mentioned belowmake it emphatic.

If trees were included in electoral roll as voters, then theywould remain, a Delhi High Court bench of justices BadarDurrez Ahmed and Ashutosh Kumar said.

The judges made the observation after being told that ahuge number of trees have been felled by authorities likeDelhi Metro for projects and by encroachers in places likethe Asola-Bhatti wildlife sanctuary on the southern fringeof the city.

Rampant destruction & degradation of wetlands all overthe country sounds as alarming. Closer home, one of CCTLife Members, Dr. Dhrubajyoti Ghosh, a UN Global 500laureate and crusader for the East Calcutta Wetlands, hasbeen making an impassioned plea for the protection ofthe water bodies and farmland covering 12,500 hectaresand the people who eke out a living there from land sharks. We are hopeful of a positive initiative by the authorities fora sustainable urban development to keep Kolkata habitablein the long run.

Non-human liberation movement has always beendominated by 99% heart, 01% brain. Thus allowing thebrainy exploiters easy option of a pass by and continuetheir vile act, more often to their own peril and to that ofthe generations to come.

Now global society accepts Compassionate Crusaderscontention that, atrocities on human is tried under the lawas crime on human society whereas atrocities on mutesis considered as breach of humanity..

Incidents covered by the media exemplified a ripple ofcompassion individually or institutionally among the generalpublic as a result of our activity. Quite a few of CCTshumane ideas have spread evenly all across the country, some even globally.

Mother Teresa was declared a Saint on 4th Septemberlast year. Earlier on 10th December, 1979. She was

conferred with the Nobel Peace Prize for her unforgettablework for the poor & distressed people.

Compassionate Crusaders, have treasured remembrancesof Mother. Our Trust was launched on November, 1993and I was fortunate enough to meet her personally andget her blessings on the subsequent New Years Day,1994. Let us remember that Animals are gods creaturesand we must use them for the purpose for which they arecreated. Let us be gods love to all we meet., Motherwrote in her message of blessings.

You need regular sign-posts if youre to find your wayalong lifes journey. We believe in Gandhjis words, Evenif youre in a minority of one, truth is always the truth.

Along with common Calcuttans who are by and large kind, one major achievement of Compassionate Crusaders havebeen in changing the attitude of the authorities! Kolkatais unique in one humane aspect, here Army, Airport &Police have been taking our help & guidance in humanelysolving all animal related issues & problems.

Another small step forward last year was CCTs initiationof Army Animals retirement. We recall with all humilityhow WB Police Horses retirement was also initiated byCCT, providing peaceful retirement home to start with. Now police authorities In both Kolkata & State provide forpost retirement rehabilitation of their Dogs & Horses.

CCT has been one of the first, in mid 1990s, to raise theissue of exploitation of human performers in circuses. Most of the children (even a majority of the adults) arevirtual bonded workers; devoid of basic insurance, postretirement benefits, even protection in case of permanent

4

disability due to injury during a performance. Now it is apart of our national agenda.

CCTs idea of active compassion to curb animal sacrificeand suggestions on blood donation camps to replaceritual of dripping blood is catching up, even in remotevillages.

CCTs vigilance against wildlife trade continues. Our anti-poaching drive and goading the appropriate authorities toregularly haul up wild birds and turtles from the greymarkets has become a routine, making a significant dent. Our volunteers from all walks of life have been ever vigilant.

Campaign against cattle smuggling is gaining momentumby the day. Our 10 year long interaction, person to person, from the highest officer to the rank & file of the BorderSecurity Force(BSF), the valiant protectors of our nationsboundary, has been the key.

CCTs stand on caged zoo is very emphatic, as ourcampaign Life imprisonment without a court of appealtells. Cages are meant for stopping animals from comingout but not for stopping visitors from entering them. Thereis a serious need for considering CCTs idea of reversezoos where visitors are guided through secured tunnelswith animals and birds roaming free all around. There isa small spot of reverse zoo inside Sunderbans TigerReserve. We need to have such facilities in the urban zoostoo.

CCT have been unrelenting in the campaign against humanencroachment of tiger habitat in Sunderbans. Our view isvery clear, if mangrove cover disappears , tigers will followand even human habitation will not be sustainable anymore.

A French-funded project with 18,000 women playing acritical role in countering climate change by creating andregenerating mangrove forests across nearly 4,500 hectaresin the Sunderbans. This effort is duly acknowledged onthe website of the United Nations Framework Conventionon Climate Change.

CCT campaign to check Elephant depredation is yieldingresult. From unique awareness campaigns and SMSservice to elephant dossiers and state-of-the-art vehiclesto tackle conflict situation, the forest departments bid tocheck man-animal conflict in south Bengal seems to haveyielded a positive result. Human casualty figure has beensubstantially reduced, from 71 year before last to 32 lastyear, as reported.

Unlike the East Kolkata Wetlands, Eco Park, in New Town,(near Kolkata) has been groomed carefully to preserveits natural surroundings over the last five years and nowbeing acclaimed amongst global urban parks.

On the flip side, amongst all the positive effects of ourcampaign, we can not relent. Every morning we are bornagain. What we do today is what matters most. , the wordsof Gautama Buddha, the ultimate compassionate crusader, can not be over emphasized as the following incidentsshow.

Numerous incidents of wild animals like Tigers, Leopards,Elephants, Bisons being trapped or killed all over thecountry is deplorable.

Veterinarians at an institute in Tamil Nadus Thanjavurhave removed 38.4kg of plastic bags and a LED bulb fromthe stomach of a bull. The bull was brought by its ownerfollowing anorexia and debility.

A faux pas in 2008 on the part of the Animal Welfare Boardof India(AWBI), in publishing an advertisement celebratingAnimal Welfare Fortnight to uphold Gandhijis messageof Ahimsa; sponsored by Animal Skin Traders.

This was also in the name of Gandhji and his land ofAhimsa

CCTs immediate refusal to accept blood money as grantsfrom AWBI, even returning the grant in 2008 is hailed byall right thinking people and our support base has grownever since!

As a mark of respect to his fond memory, a friends familyhas facilitated in creating ASHIS BHATTACHARYAMEMORIAL FUND with the Compassionate CrusadersTrust, as a corpus fund to support our care-givers of themutes in their effort in initiating primary education/ furtherstudies for their children. This helps in creating a newgeneration of compassionate citizens, a dream Ashis hadnurtured!

Arijit, who passed his secondary exams, has got fund-support for a new computer from ASHIS BHATTACHARYAMEMORIAL FUND.

Year before last, to express our appreciation to our sincereworkers and to commemorate CCTs journey to adulthood, the Trustees had decided upon to support all the childrenof our non-executive staff members through a monthlydirect deposit in the beneficiarys (child) bank account byway of recurring deposit for each child till he/she reachesthe age of eighteen. This is to facilitate their career buildingas they become adults. It may be noted here, that someof the children are first generation school goers.

Abhisweta, as the first beneficiary, has got her fund onmaturity this year.

Four years on, Compassionate Crusaders Centre forAnimal Welfare, popular as Tollygunge Clinic has had acomplete makeover with additional facilities for treatmentof the mutes in cool comfort; thanks to the generoussupport from the compassionate calcuttan couple, Mr.Subrato & Mrs. Subhra Ghosh. We continue to enhancethe time and quality of treatment further, at our Clinic, afavorite of the caring animal lovers of our city. Last yeara direct call facility to the clinic is introduced, for the benefitof the caring animal lovers. This is in addition to our roundthe clock Animal Helpline.

Karuna Kunj also has had a sparkling makeover, is oneof the cleanest gardens ever, to quote from a media writeup. Most significantly our staff there has been instrumentalin implementation and maintenance of the upgraded facility. We have been adding to the facilities for fun-relief for theresidents of Karuna Kunj. The Doggy-Kitty shower, uniquein the country, continue to comfort them during oppressivesummer heat. The live streaming of the activities ofKaruna Kunj has become a real boon for the pet ownerswho are forced by circumstances to send their favouritepets to the shelter or even those who would love to haveoccasional glance through the final resting place of thebeloved pets.

Karuna Kunj cattery has become a Feline Disney Land, thanks To The Calcutta Construction Company, that hassponsored the extension of the Cattery. The SaturdayClubs kind donation of the play-things like Jungle Gym,Slide, Swing for the enjoyment of the cats have acted likethe icing on the cake!

Animals can only love and trust you or they can at themost fear you, hatred is alien to the animal world. KarunaKunj is a rare place which has a only love, no hatred vivewhich is so much of a need of the hour in this strife strickenworld full of hatred amongst humans. Karuna Kunj has aunique feature of planting of trees by families tocommemorate their departed human members. Twofamilies from Kolkata and one from Pune, apart from twoof our work-associates have commemorative trees plantedin fond remembrances as continuity of life by changingform into trees.

Karuna Kunj pet-burial continues to offer dignified farewellto the departed mute members the family. The Memorialto Every Loving Pet stands in all its gracious serenity, withthe touching poem that brings a lump to all animal loversthroat! Now a solar powered lamp post, courtesy Mr. PradipMitra, brightens the serene space.

Our recyclable pet-burial idea is spreading in humancommunities globally. New consumer movement has beenunderway to promote natural burial grounds wherepeople are buried in biodegradable containers, withoutformaldehyde-based embalming fluid or syntheticingredients, and returned to the earth to compost into soilnutrients with a forest of trees marking the spotarespringing up. Hundreds of sites offering some form ofnatural burial have emerged in the UK, Australia, NewZealand, the US and Canada, with other countries comingon fast. Citizen-driven movements in support of naturalburial can now be found in Europe, China, Japan, Germany, and Africa.

Together in death as in life is the slogan of the GreenPet-Burial Society, USA. They have opted for affiliation

with us and put Karuna Kunj at Compassionate CrusadersTrust (CCT), Kolkata, India in their International CemeteryDirectory.

Sputnik Sylvells Mickeys Mustard, my global-campaignerchihuahua, has been a pioneer in campaign through socialmedia which is now all pervading. He was known by allhis friends across the globe including 5000 in Facebook(in 2009), as Sputnik, the Tiny crusader.

Sputniks Garden is an interesting addition to the richgreenery of Karuna Kunj, where about 80 varieties of treesand plants are recorded and documented. An areaearmarked as a nursery of saplings and existing trees ofabout 50 varieties are nurtured in Sputniks Garden. Thesaplings are multiplied regularly for free distribution to thechildren for greening the community. The garden alongwith the basic maintenance of the greenery, water body,Lilly pool etc. at Karuna Kunj are sponsored fully bySputniks family.

Sheru Singh Memorial is a piece of green & flowers inmemory of Sheru, the departed pet of Kohli family. Theywrote Thank you so very much in assisting us to realizethe power of love. We were so blessed to learn and shareSherus love and compassion with many more souls thanever imagined. It is truly an honor to work with you andyour staff in Kolkatta. We are all related through love, abond that is eternal. Sincerely, Veena, Honey, and RuchiKohli., Maryland, USA.

There are regular young visitors & volunteers to cheer themutes in our care.

Mr. Sukriti Chakraborty from Pune have encouraged ourboys at Karuna Kunj.

Fellow Calcuttans, Mr. Mohi Ranjan Halder and Rao sistersUma & Lalita continue to be genuine supporters for themutes, year after year.

We mention with gratitude, the kind gesture of the HastingsChapel authorities for allowing us to park our Water Tankerfor the animals round the year. Last year we have shiftedthe tanker to our Howrah unit as Kolkata MunicipalCorporation has constructed a large water hole for themaidan ponies.

We deeply miss our very dear and respected Saralaji Birla,Veena Kohli and Dady C Dady for their unstinted supportand guidance. We will miss & remember them till the endof time.

Now to the brass tacks, the resource aspects. CCT sailsthrough, making best use of available resource, comingmostly from caring calcuttans.

Since the last eight years, we have had no financial helpfrom the Government, either central or state, nor relatedresources like Local Area Development Fund. By sheerimproved financial management and optimum utilizationof resources, yet again we have improved on our balancesheet without any financial liability.

This year we have been successful in enhancing ourProject Expenditure to 73%; this in spite of 20% increasedexpenditure on administrative costs.

CCT staff members are also adequately compensatedwith additional service charges to meet the living cost.

Continuing on the positive trend of last seven years, CCThas achieved a zero liability in this financial year 2016-17also. Plainly speaking, no unpaid bills, whatsoever!

Page 13: ANNUAL REPORT 2017 · 2 The judges made the observation after being told that a huge number of trees have been felled by authorities like Delhi Metro for projects and by encroachers

11

In addition we have put our allowable corpus as fixeddeposit to sail through any rough weather so that themutes in our care and their care-givers never feel the pinchof the happenings at large. All these are achieved by thededicated and matured handling of the affairs by ourwonderful young team.

Help has come, mostly, from the goodwill and support ofthe people of Kolkata, a city famous for its warmth andkindness. We salute Calcuttans for their attitude andawareness, and recognize the vital role they play in thesuccess of our endeavors.

Most importantly, we have never compromised on thequality of our service to the poor suffering animals of ourcity and elsewhere, which is after all the very reason forour existence.

To maintain the standard of our services to the mutes,we have procured a new Mobile Clinic (Mahindra BoleroAmbulance, BS-IV), with the fund-support from TheExecutrix of the will of the late Dady C Dady. It looks goodbut more important, it will help thousands of animals... ,one important initiator of the Project in Memory of DadyC Dady wrote back on seeing its photographs.

We have decided to phase out (scrap) our 18 year oldMobile Clinic (Mahindra Voyager) to save on fuel &maintenance cost. During last year one of our vehicles,Bajaj Trax have been given over to our fledgling Howrahunit.

Most humbly we dedicate this achievement to thecompassionate souls across the globe, who have beenour supporters since Compassionate Crusaders started

out on its journey in November 1993 with a corpus of onlyOne Thousand Rupees.

I take this opportunity to offer some necessary clarificationregarding our Report on Activity & Financial status.

Donors & Supporters- As it would be next to impossibleto mention our innumerable donors in cash & kind., wemention donors of Rs.5000 & above, or regular donors ofsmaller amounts. As also those who help in raising andmaintenance of infrastructure and facilities for the animalsin our care. Other supporters mentioned, include all wellmeaning individuals/groups/corporates who give uscontinuous logistic support and lend their expertise on therelevant issues in the course of our crusade for compassion.

Statement of Accounts - Some more clarification regardingour Statement of Accounts which reflects our financialactivity. Statement of Accounts is prepared and duly audited, more in the format of the statutory requirement of the lawof the land. At the first glance some expenditure may stareback at the beholder. As the bills raised by essentialservices like telephone, electricity, fuel, vehicle repairs(mostly) have to be paid directly from the trust fund.

That apart there are varied expenditure which are directlysettled by the donors, including food, medicines, infrastructure, maintenance which are never reflected inthe financial report. Whereas the assets created as wellas fund saved by the direct fund givers can not be reflectedin the financial report either.

Transparency is our keyword, like previous years we areposting the financial and activity report on our website.

Page 15: ANNUAL REPORT 2017 · 2 The judges made the observation after being told that a huge number of trees have been felled by authorities like Delhi Metro for projects and by encroachers

13

The regular pandemic of different zoonotic disease is agrim warning of the consequences of neglecting theimportance of animal welfare.

Philanthropists and social workers (including the medicalfraternity) seldom realize that to help the health andeconomy of a society, it is vital to focus on preventive(rather than curative) health care.

Diseases spread through earth, water, food and air. Eventhe milk of a diseased cow has ill-effects. A baby born toan emaciated mother who has worms can be born withbrain damage. Instead of spending countless millions, cant we do some judicious planning to reduce the needfor curing people; taking steps to keep them healthyinstead?

The media has been extremely supportive even thoughwe could never offer them any thing other than our sincerityfor the cause of compassion. As Mahatma Gandhi said,Mother Earth has enough for everybodys need but therecan never be enough for everybodys greed! I would liketo take this opportunity to thank all the media personnelwhose innate sensitivity and skillful pens and camerasvoiced needs of the mutes and the CompassionateCrusaders endeavor in creating a kinder world.

We remember with gratitude, The Hindustan Times dailypublication of Compassionate Crusaders Animal Helpline.

As also The Telegraphs coverage of our emergency petcare in their Metro Guide. Many pets have benefited bythis action of theirs.

The Animal lovers of Kolkata can boast of their city beingthe only METRO CITY in the country to have a 24 HourANIMAL HELPLINE!

Our regular activity update, including pictures will beavailable at the Facebook profile CompassionateCrusaders Trust which has enhanced it following by 500%or five times since it was launched three years back; alongwi th re la ted B logs and Youtube channe l ,ANIMALCRUSADER created and maintained by ourE-team.

From 2015, we have started using e-media like WhatsApp for sending live photos to the owners/rescuers as alsopeople who are unable accompany their departed pets inour Hearse van.

This year we have started to show our shelter & petmemorial activities through live streaming for the benefitof the pet owners concerned; over a period of time weaspire to make it available for all our animal loving friends.

We will continue to post our year long activity details andaudited accounts

on our Website and Facebook. Both the Facebookwww.facebook.com/animalcrusaders & the Websitewww.animalcrusaders.org display the Videos of some ofour activities apart from regularly updated photographswe hope to keep on adding more!
