chairman’s welcome

Welcome to Riviera’s Offshore Support Journal weekEdwin LampertChairman, Annual Offshore Support Journal Conference, Awards and ExhibitionGroup Managing EditorRiviera Maritime Media

I t give me great pleasure to welcome you to what is referred to informally in the industry as ‘Riviera’s Offshore Support Journal week’. The name derives

from the fact that the week ahead will see three world class conferences, a magnificent gala dinner and awards, an industry leading exhibition and countless networking opportunities across the coffee breaks, lunches and receptions that take place over the next three days.

As is our custom, we have retained popular elements and simultaneously evolved the format to ensure that our event programmes remain topical and relevant.

Retained elements include our venue, The Lancaster, which allows us to accommodate this year’s record numbers, streamed sessions, our exhibition as well as this evening’s ever popular gala dinner and awards. The format of our programme allows for interviews with industry leaders, panel discussion and open debate.

The most noticeable new element is the decision to bring our popular European Dynamic Positioning Conference (2 February) into Riviera’s Offshore Support Journal Week. Attendees are able to benefit from enhanced networking and business opportunities, and the obvious synergies that flow from having the world’s largest offshore support vessel conference take place the next day. This new integrated approach also finds expression in the creation of a new Dynamic Positioning Award, which will be presented at the gala dinner on 3 February.

Our focussed one-day programme will address market developments; regulatory guidance; vessel design; DPO competence standards, best practice; FMEAs; training; technology; and operating in challenging environments.

In parallel with our European Dynamic Positioning Conference is our Offshore Support Journal Subsea. This popular event is now in its third year. Attendees will receive a through briefing on the market; vessel design; coping with deeper and heavier operations;

ROV and AUV developments; simulation technology; certification; safety; diving systems and saturation diving. In common with the European Dynamic Positioning Conference, generous opportunities to network before, between and after the conference sessions have been factored in.

T he centrepiece of Riviera’s Offshore Support Journal Week is of course the Annual Offshore Support Journal Conference, Awards &

Exhibition (3-4 February). Once again the event is being held in association with Caterpillar, and will cover the full gamut of commercial, technical and operational questions essential for effective operations in today’s challenging market. Inevitably oil price and financial issues will headline the conference, but will not displace important presentation and discussion around crew management and training; vessel design; technology; life cycle management; regional updates; and growth opportunities in niche markets.

A hallmark of The Annual Offshore Support Journal Conference & Awards is its outstanding networking opportunities. Delegates can mix at our coffee breaks, buffet lunches and our evening dinner, generously sponsored by Cummins Marine. This has a deserved reputation as one of the industry’s most enjoyable and convivial dinners and is further enhanced with the presentation of the Annual Offshore Support Journal Awards.

Of course the European Dynamic Positioning Conference could not take place without the generous support of our sponsors. We are also grateful for the enthusiastic support of our official supporting organisations. Please also be sure to visit the world class companies that form our supporting exhibition – the largest of its kind.

Last, but by no means least, we are especially grateful to you, our international audience, for coming again in such numbers and from all over the world for a tenth consecutive year.

Welcome!

O n behalf of Caterpillar, I am pleased to welcome you to the 2016 OSJ Conference in London. In terms of bringing all of the

stakeholders in the OSV industry together to share knowledge and discuss how we can turn challenges into opportunities, this is the place to be.

With a market outlook that is a mixture between great potential and slowdown, we need all the insights we can get to make the right decisions and capture the great market that is out there. But it will take fresh ideas, improved technology and wave-breaking solutions.

Our industry is on the brink of transformation. We can already see how borders open, communication increases and business practices change and help propel global growth. But that is not all. We’re venturing into deeper and more remote waters, putting new demands on equipment and crew, we’re facing stricter regulations too. The demand for

solutions that can increase output without sacrificing the environment is higher than ever. It’s a natural part of everyone’s agenda.

C an technology help us meet those demands? Not in itself. Technology is not what’s important. It’s how we put it to use, how

we work holistically to improve every aspect of our business that makes a difference. It’s about everything from monitoring the vessel’s total performance to recruiting and retaining the best people.

Thanks to Caterpillar’s 90 years of innovation and experience of focusing on you, the customer, you can feel safe knowing that you have the right equipment and the right information. It allows you to spend less time worrying and more time doing what you do best.

Here’s wishing you a great conference and, as always, we welcome the chance to talk with you. So come over and say hello.

Van Aalst Group is specialised in specific fields of cargo handling to transport and distribute dry bulk and liquids to the worldwide Offshore & Construction Industry. Latest new product is a motion compensated gangway bridge called Safeway.

Today, the companies have become an industry reference point thanks to the short communication lines and their highly skilled enthusiastic professionals who dedicate themselves to deliver sustainable products that meet business specific processes.

Close collaboration and decade of sound field knowledge has led to great technological advances as a result of the customer driven approach and dedication. With the core design principles being reliable, durable, efficient and safe, the companies continually deliver top quality products that adhere to customer specific and environmental demands. In line with the environmental regulations which are reflected in the latest products, Van Aalst Group works with determination to deliver environment- friendly solutions for now and the future.

An empty vessel is an opportunity missed. The development of the CargoMaxx multi-purpose cargo system, which is capable of carrying dry and liquid bulk, plus drill cuttings. With CargoMaxx, offshore supply vessels can take dry materials to a platform and utilize the same tanks on the return trip to carry drill cuttings, return mud and other process waste.

A major market improvement comes with Safeway’s motion compensated gangway which can operate in up to 3.5 meter significant waves, at 20 meter above sea level. This enables a year-round workability and allows operators to better plan their operations, while creating transfers in larger weather windows, with increased safety and thus an improved overall efficiency in executing W2W operations.

Industry leaders Petrobras, Statoil, Shell and ExxonMobil have already implemented all Van Aalst products in their chartered Offshore Support Vessels.

Vanuatu Maritime Services Limited (VMSL) welcomes delegates to the OSJ Conference in London and it is again our pleasure to co-sponsor this high profile event.

Vanuatu is an independent nation comprising a chain of islands in the South West Pacific, about 2,000km North East of Australia. Vanuatu has been an independent nation since 1980, being a member of the United Nations and the Commonwealth.

The Vanuatu Flag offers both an ethical and economical shipping register, affording significant savings in overall operating costs.

Vanuatu Maritime Services Limited (VMSL) is the company responsible for operating the Vanuatu Flag Administration, which is an open shipping register with no restrictions on ship owner’s domicile or crew nationality. The registry recognizes most national qualifications for seafarers to serve onboard Vanuatu Flag Vessels.

VMSL is responsible for compliance with international shipping legislation and with the safety and welfare of the seafarers serving onboard Vanuatu flagged vessels.

As a member of the International Maritime Organization, with a permanent representative at the IMO here in London, the Vanuatu Shipping Register is committed to maintaining high standards of safety within its fleet, and has adopted all relevant IMO Conventions.

With a current fleet size of some 700 vessels, a significant percentage being in the offshore sector, the Vanuatu Shipping Register is able to offer a more personalized service to its flagged vessel managers, and work with them (rather than as a faceless bureaucracy) towards vessels with good onboard ‘safety cultures’, and less time lost on Port State Control issues.

The Administration (headquartered in Port Vila, with major administrative offices in New York and Tokyo) is represented worldwide by a network of Deputy Commissioners and Special Agents, based in all of the major ports and shipping centres, along with a vast network of Approved Safety Inspectors and Surveyors, who stand ready to assist our flagged vessels.

Extremely attractive registration, and annual costs are available and our representatives will be happy to discuss these.
