A New Year’s celebration signals many things to us. )t’s a time to celebrate, to rejoice, and to

These resolutions are far great and

On behalf of the Nepali Cultural

Society of Manitoba and on my own

behalf, I would like to wish you all

Happy New Year 2071. Please start

the new year with a fresh mind-set

and determination to do even better

than what you were able to

accomplish in 2070. This is also a

time to reflect to rectify the past and

look forward to building a new

future. Today is the seventh Annual

General Meeting (AGM) of the society

coinciding with the Nepali New Year

that we had been celebrating every

year? Please join us in celebrating

the Nepali New Year and participate

in AGM. Let us all work together to

make the community of Nepali

speaking people vibrant and growing

in the province and lets us be active

contributing members of this

province and Canada.

It gives me great pleasure in

introducing the NCSM Newsletter

after so many years that outlines the

various programs that were

organized for the community and

others that are in the pipeline. I

would like to thank the Newsletter

Committee for putting their

dedicated efforts and working

towards setting a good precedence of

bringing in literacy articles once in a

while. I hope you can make it a

regular feature of the NCSM. Raju

Timsina and Srijana Uprety who

were Co-Directors of Communication

and Public Affairs had started this

during 2007 - 2009. I hope you will

enjoy reading the articles in this

newsletter some of which are good

literary pieces from budding young

writers and poets in the community.

That is an encouraging sign and the

NCSM Executive Committee/Board

would like to see it growing to

become a forum that encourages

young minds.

I would like to encourage you all to

become the members of the society

and increase our bond and

interaction through community

activities. Let us iron out the

differences and work together. The NCSM Board’s goal had always been to embrace unity and extend

friendship and goodwill among

ourselves and with others in the

community. If you have constructive

suggestions, the Board is prepared to

listen in making this society better

and more functional.

Many had indicated that they are not

aware of NCSM and what we do. For

your information, NCSM was formed

in 2007 with the main aim of

preserving and promoting Nepali

culture, language and heritage in

Manitoba. The Executive

Council/Board, consisting of seven

members, is the operational wing of

NCSM that plans and executes

various cultural and community

development activities. You will see a

list of all board members since we

started in this newsletter and in our

website. The current board is the

fourth in the succession and we are

entering the second year of its two

year term.

As you all know that the society has

members who come from Nepal,

India, Bhutan and Canadian born

non-Nepali speaking people as well.

We would like to encourage and

broaden our membership base to all

other Manitobans, irrespective of

whatever background they come

from in joining hands with the

society in celebrating the rich culture

and heritage of the Nepali people, no

matter where we were born and

originate from.

The Executive Council/Board looks

forward to working with you and

serving your needs.

Thank you and Namaskar!

NCSM Program Activities for

2013/2014 (2070 B.S.)

Nepali Cultural Society of Manitoba organized and/or participated

in a variety of programs ranging from literacy, cultural, special

social/community events, youth development, traditional games of

cultural importance and cultural/musical exchange programs.

April 13, 2013 | NCSM organized AGM and New

Year 2070 Celebration. The current executive board

was formed during this Annual General Meeting.

Nominations by eight members were filed for seven

positions.

Jun 22, 2013 | NCSM Participated in Canadian

Multiculturalism Day organized by Manitoba

Multicultural Secretariat at The Forks, downtown

Winnipeg. Two Nepali dances were performed in front

of a huge crowd of various cultural backgrounds. In

addition, our community members volunteered to

provide traditional Nepali artifacts and cultural items

to showcase our rich tradition and culture in front of

all. These items were placed on a display table

provided by the organizer.

June 23, 2013 | Nepali Class Coordination

Committee celebrated Annual Award Ceremony at St.

Anne's Hindu Temple, in collaboration with Vidya

Bhawan, Hindu Society of Manitoba. Besides Nepali

Language and Culture Class family, students and family

members of Hindi, Malayalam and Tamil language and

Math classes were present. In between the certificate /

trophy distributions for two different classes, students

performed a number of cultural programs. The two

MCs for the award ceremony were our own Prasansa

Subedi and Asmita Neupane both from our Nepali

Class.

June 29-30, 2013 | Participated in Western Canada

Regional Sports and

Cultural Event

jointly organized by

Nepalese Community

of Saskatoon (NECOS)

and the Nepalese

Students of the

University of

Saskatchewan in the

City of Saskatoon.

Winnipeg had two

strong soccer teams

and they also

participated in other

sport events

including volleyball,

badminton and dandibiyo. With excellent

performance, both soccer teams from Winnipeg

reached the semi-final of the event and NCSM is proud

to share that our boys came with runners-up trophy.

July 01, 2013 | NCSM Celebrated Canada Day at

Crescent Park, Winnipeg: About 250 community

members joined this

Canada Day pot-lock

everybody enjoyed

many delicious foods

brought by over 30

generous volunteer

families. Besides

variety of delicious

foods, community members also participated in

various outdoor fun activities including tug-of-war,

sack race, spoon race, volley ball, soccer and so on.

August 10, 2013 | NCSM and Nepali Students'

Association (NSA) of the University of Manitoba jointly

August 10, 2013 | Following the felicitation program,

the same evening NCSM participated in the

Folkorama, a multicultural event in the City of

Winnipeg, at India Pavilion with a Nepali Folk Dance.

This participation was in response to the request

received from the organizing committee of the India

Pavilion to our Nepali community. Participation in

Folkorama by Nepali artists was also the first of its

kind. [PS: Folkorama began in 1970 as a one-time

multicultural event to celebrate Manitoba's Centennial.

It was so successful it has returned every year since.]

September 6, 2013 | NCSM organized Teej festival at

Peaceful Village, downtown Winnipeg. This was

another successfully run pot-lock event with a number

of stage performances. The event allowed about 100

community members to come together in one place to

celebrated TEEJ, the festival of ladies. The youth artists

performed various cultural activities and at the end all

ages of ladies joined the floor dance in a number of

melodious TEEJ songs. There were lots of foods to

share, which came from over 15 generous volunteer

families.

September 14, 2013 | The Youth Development

Committee of NCSM organized Youth Volleyball and

Soccer Tournament in Centennial Park. This was an

all-day event where more than 60 community youth

participated in three categories of the sports event:

ladies volleyball, boys volleyball and soccer. There

were 10 volleyball teams in total and 2 soccer teams.

The event attracted spectators of all ages from little

kids to elders living in the Central Neighbourhood

Development Corporation (CNDC) area.

October 2, 2013 | Community members welcomed

our own Anuradha Koirala, the 2010 CNN Hero and

the founder of Maiti Nepal. NCSM

representatives/members and UoM students

participated in the lunch and lecture program hosted

for her by the University of Manitoba.

October 12, 2013 | NCSM supported the hosting of

first ever Nepali Cultural Night that introduced

Nepali Culture to a wider Manitoba community and we

had the honour of having the Minister of Immigration

and Multiculturism as the Chief Guest.

November 9, 2013 | Participated in Diwali Mela at

the Convention Center, Winnipeg. Our community kids

of ages 5 to 10 years performed beautiful dance in a

melodious Nepali song.

[On behalf of NCSM, the current executive board would

like to thank all the volunteers and organizations for

their selfless time and supports to make us all proud.]

Our Language &

Culture: A Priceless Gift BY: Prasansa Subedi

Namaste,

)’m Prasansa and )’m currently a student enrolled in the Vidya Bhavan Nepali Language and Culture Class. I

honestly have to say that attending Nepali Class has been one of the most rewarding things )’ve ever done.

Yes, my initial reaction was that I had been forced

to attend Nepali Class, but I am truly grateful towards my

parents for that, for the journey has been amazing.

Originally, my sister and I were enrolled in the Vidya Bhavan’s (indi Class, so at the very least we could still be engaged in the Devnagari scripts and Hindu culture.

Overtime, the Nepali community had grown to

the point where a Nepali Class was formed within Vidya

Bhawan. I have to admit, at first I was reluctant to going because ) wasn’t confident in my level of speaking yet. However, now I have grown a long way and my

confidence has grown hugely through Nepali Class. Once

being someone who could barely speak Nepali, reading

and writing being something I could only dream of doing,

I can now fluently write, speak, and read in Nepali.

Furthermore, Nepali Class has allowed me to

understand my identity as a Nepalese. It has inculcated in

me a sense of pride and belonging in my ethnic origins. I

feel that this is truly invaluable because in the future, it is

something I cannot buy even with a million dollars. )t’s something that needs to be focused on now.

This knowledge of our Nepali cultures and a

sense of pride in our heritage truly needs to be identified

by the youth in our community, at this time. We are the

future representatives of Nepali culture in Canada, and

this is the only time in which we can develop and

preserve our unique identity. As youth and future leaders,

it is our responsibility to gain knowledge on who we truly

are so we can pass it on for generations to come.

In all sincerity, I wish all of the Nepali youth in

Winnipeg could join Nepali Class so we could become

better leaders of the future. I would also like to genuinely

thank the organizers and volunteers of the Nepali

Language and Culture Class who have been working

selflessly for taking on this noble pursuit of imparting this

invaluable gift.

Thank you.
