The 2018 Annual Newsletter of Uganda Technology and Management University (UTAMU) brings you a collection of the recent developments, achievements made in the last 12 months and gives a synopsis of the major milestones.

The year started with starting the new academic year of January 2018 Intake and students participating in the 3rd African Grand Challenge in Tanzania. The University hosted the first ever Indabax workshop on Artificial Intelligence in Uganda, launched a mobile application that allows digital counselling sessions for students and also participated in the 10th Higher Education Exhibition. Due to high demand for better quality and hands-on education services, the University trained and equipped West Nile people with ICT skills and offered certificate courses to enhance gainful employment and productivity in the region. The university also had a privilege of collaborating with Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) and facilitated a capacity building training for university students to develop mobile applications to solve agricultural problems.

UTAMU also successfully held its 5th Annual International Conference on Technology and Management and 4th graduation which increased the university alumni to more than 600 who are in the field making a positive impact in their societies. The university ranking as the 7th best University in Uganda further attests the robustness of our systems.

Students Hoist UTAMU Flag at 3rd African Grand Challenge in TZ

From 25-29 January, a team of four undergraduate students participated in the 3rd African Grand Challenge which took place at The Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology, in Arusha, Tanzania.

The participants developed new and innovative products and services that can be used to improve Healthcare, Animal Science and Wildlife Management in Africa. Sadat Anwar, Collins Nuwagaba, Mush Simon Glory and Simon Kamya represented UTAMU during the 2018 Grand Challenge.

UTAMU Hosts First Ever Indabax Uganda Workshop

On March 29, UTAMU hosted the first ever Indabax workshop on Artificial Intelligence in Uganda on 29th March 2018 at Silver Springs Hotel. Organized under the theme; “Harness the potential of Artificial Intelligence”, the workshop attracted students from UTAMU,

Makerere, Kyambogo, Busitema University and Islamic University in Uganda. It engaged students on how Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning can be utilized to solve society problems in Uganda and Africa.

UTAMU Student-Counselling Goes Digital

In March 2018, UTAMU being a technology-driven University, decided to take the counselling sessions digital. It embraced the use of a mobile application with a feature that supports counselling of students. MyGrades SASA - a Student Academic Support Application

has a feature called Counsellor (Chat with your counsellor). Students are able to use the application to access the services of a counsellor or mentor from anywhere at any time. “This App also helps students who fear to physically approach their lecturers or

counsellors to seek for advice,” says Prof. Jude Lubega, Deputy Vice Chancellor.

UTAMU at 10th NCHE Exhibition

UTAMU participated at the 10th Uganda Higher Education Exhibition held at UMA Show grounds in Lugogo, Kampala from 15th to 17th, March 2018 organised by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE). This year’s NCHE exhibition attracted secondary schools around Kampala and its outskirts, several institutions of higher learning including those from Kenya and human rights organizations. The theme was; Higher education for the future: Strengthening Innovations for Sustainable Development.

UTAMU Takes Education Services Closer to the Yumbe District

Due to the high demand for better quality and hands-on education services from the communities in West Nile, early this year, UTAMU partnered with St. John Bosco Core PTC- Lodonga in Yumbe district and offered short certificate courses to enhance gainful

employment and productivity of the employees in the region. Over 40 students completed three-month certificate courses in Monitoring and Evaluation, Administrative

Law and Public Administration. The courses were designed to address the specific individual and group needs and promote skills development, manage knowledge transfer

partnerships and enhance university community engagements.

UTAMU Promotes Digital Literacy in West Nile

UTAMU promoted digital literacy at the 6th National Inter-generational Cross Cultural Multilingual Literacy Learners Conference which took place from July 13-15 at St. John Bosco Core PTC- Lodonga study Centre in Yumbe District, is organized under the theme; “Literacies, disasters and bio-diversity: integrating cultures and literacies into disaster responses for sustainable use of the environment”. UTAMU participated and taught people on how to use ICT tools.

RUTAMU Wins at 93rd District Conference & Assembly

This year, the Rotaract Club of Uganda Technology and Management University (RUTAMU) won a number of awards for its exceptional work they are doing in the communities.

At the 93rd District Conference & Assembly held from May 2-5, 2018 at the Imperial Hotel in Entebbe, RUTAMU received three awards: As the Most Outstanding Institution based Club Award, Winner Rotary Foundation Award and 2nd Runner Up Image of Rotaract Award.

RUTAMU’s Early Childhood for the future project recognized as Rotaract’s Outstanding service project Award 2017/18.

UTAMU & UCC Support Students Develop ICT Solutions for Farmers

UTAMU in collaboration with Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) this year facilitated a capacity building training for university students to develop mobile applications to solve agricultural problems. The 5-day hackathon dubbed UTAMUHacks run from July 30 – August 3 where 26 students undertaking ICT related courses from UTAMU, Makerere University, Kyambogo, MUBS, Muni University, Cavendish University and International University of East Africa took part in the competition.

DVC Awarded for Supporting Research in Netherlands

On May 28, UTAMU Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Jude Lubega received an award from University of Groningen in the Netherlands, for his role in supporting research. The professor received an award when he had gone to witness his student - Dr.

Robert Tweheyo defend his PhD thesis at the University of Groningen. Prof. Lubega has supervised thirteen PhD students.

The students developed applications that can help farmers access finance and extension services which is key in improving agricultural production both in the crop and livestock sectors respectively. The winners of the hackathon received Ugx 1.5 Million from UCC at the Annual International Conference on Technology and Management (ICTM) which took place on 6th August at Silver Springs Hotel.

Students Develop Larvae Incubator to Solve Deficiency in Poultry

A-team of five students developed an Incubator that can help poultry farmers solve the problem of nutritional deficiency. The winners of the UTAMUHacks hackathon – Team Larvae Incubation Can - developed a can that regulates the temperature needed to hatch eggs into larvae without depending on the sun. The can helps in hatching larvae rich in protein

and vitamin that is necessary in poultry and fish farming. It solves problems of nutrition deficiency in poultry birds, fish and humans that feed on fish, chicken and eggs. The team received an award of 1.5 Million Ugandan shillings as startup capital to help up fully develop their innovation.

UTAMU Successfully Holds 5th ICTM

This year, UTAMU held its 5th Annual International Conference on Technology and Management (ICTM) on the 6th and 7th of August at Silver Springs Hotel in Bugolobi, Kampala. The conference attracted more than 110 delegates from Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, Uganda who included practitioners, senior scholars and academicians as

Award Of Best Performing Students

Four students were awarded with gifts/plaques for demonstrating excellence in their academic studies – class of 2018. The best male student at Postgraduate level was Isaac Tweterane from the School of Computing and Engineering (SCE). The best female student was Jesca Nampala Sserwanga from the School of Business and Management (SBM). At Undergraduate level, Allan Tumusiime was the best male student from the School of Computing and Engineering and Harriet Kobusingye was the best female student from the School of Business and Management.

On 28th September, UTAMU marked its 4th Graduation Ceremony and 295 students graduated with Masters Degrees, Post-graduate Diplomas, Bachelor’s degrees and Undergraduate diplomas in various disciplines. The ceremony was presided over by the former Vice President of the Republic of Kenya and the founding Chancellor of UTAMU, H.E Hon. Dr. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka. The Chief Guest was the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Hon. Elioda Tumwesigye and a Keynote Speaker, Mr. Ambroose Kibuuka Mukiibi, a motivational Speaker and author of “After University What Next”.

UTAMU partners with Sunmaker in Oil and Gas Capacity Building

This year UTAMU partnered with Sunmaker Oil & Gas Training Institute Limited in Oil and Gas capacity building. Sunmaker Oil & Gas Training Institute which is under the Sunmaker Energy Uganda Group is a professional high-tech enterprise dedicated to providing comprehensive ranges of professional training and human resource services in oil and gas industry. The areas for collaboration include: joint training of oil and gas Engineering, joint applications for training grants, joint consulting, and community engagement and internship opportunities for our students.

UTAMU Rated 7th Best University in Uganda

Beating a list of universities which have been in the industry for decades, Uganda Technology And Management University (UTAMU) was in January and August 2018 ranked 7th best University in Uganda. This report was released by UniRank (www.4icu.org.ug), an international

higher education search engine and directory of world universities and colleges.This top ranking reflects strong performance across most issues, especially its research in Technology and Management on the African Continent in addition to having excellent staff and

students. In 2014, UTAMU was ranked as the 12th best by Webometrics, the largest academic ranking of higher education institutions out of the 37 best universities in Uganda, 10th in 2015 and 2016, 8th in 2017 and with the latest rankings having it at the 7th position.

UTAMU DVC Named Among 100 Most influential People in Africa

Uganda Technology and Management University (UTAMU)’s Deputy Vice Chancellor has been named among the top 100 most influential people in online learning in Africa. Prof. Jude Lubega, who is a professor of Computer Science, was ranked Number 58 on the Africa list of movers and shakers in corporate online learning in Africa.

He has been at the forefront in implementing

e-learning within Uganda and has supported several organisations - both academic and non-academic - to take up e-learning.The list was compiled on the basis of a person’s perceived current influence on the online learning industry – as a practitioner, commentator, facilitator and/or thought leader. All the people named on the list are deemed to be influential within the e-learning sector within their country / continent.

Dr. Doris Kakuru, Dean School of Business and Management this year published a new book chapter: Kakuru, D. M (2018) Reconstructing child caregiving: Perspectives on child headed households in Uganda.The book titled; “Early Childhood Care and Education at the Margins: African Perspectives on Birth to Three”, was released in last September by Routledge, one of the world's leading academic publisher in the Humanities and Social Sciences. The book chapter problematics the dominant constructions of Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) promoted by the poor acknowledgement of the voices of children in the margins.

UTAMU Accredited as an ICDL Centre

UTAMU was in October accredited an International Computer and Driving License (ICDL) training and testing Centre. With this accreditation, UTAMU is now able to deliver internationally recognized certification in computer

skills literacy programme. This came at the time the Government of Uganda finalized on the a policy of streamlining skills development in the ICT sector and ICDL has been approved as the benchmark qualification for basic computing skills for all public servants in Uganda.“This is a great achievement for UTAMU as the university joins a club of a few institutions in Uganda which are accredited to deliver the internationally recognized certification in computer skills literacy programme,” said Dr. Drake Mirembe, the Dean School of Professional and Vocational Education.

A female Uganda Police Officer who scooped a scholarship from UTAMU in 2015 after her photo of her on duty during a heavy downpour went viral on social media, finally completed her diploma in September. On 30th October 2015, a photo of Betty Patricia Chemisto, a Ugandan Police traffic officer was caught on camera braving the rain to guide traffic. Her selfless and commendable act caught the public’s attention and compelled UTAMU to offer her a scholarship to study a programme of her choice. Last week on Friday, 28th September 2018, she graduated with a Diploma in Business Administration (BBA).At UTAMU’s 4th graduation ceremony, Prof. Benon Basheka, the

Police Officer Who Braved Rains Successfully Completes Diploma

University Vice Chancellor commended Chemisto for successfully completing her diploma and for demonstrating a high level of professionalism and commitment to her work which undoubtedly contributes to the good image of Uganda Police Force. He attributed her completing to the University flexible and mode of academic delivery which enables students to study without compromising her work obligations.

On 10th December, the Uganda Police Health Services conducted a Hepatitis B Vaccination drive at the university premises in effect to prevent a viral infection that attacks the liver and can cause both acute and chronic liver disease. Students and staff were encouraged to get vaccinated against the acute disease.Hepatitis B is a major liver infection of global concern caused by the Hepatitis B virus and is responsible for substantial disease and death. This infection can manifest as either acute or chronic liver disease.

UTAMU Shines at Parliament Innovation and Technology Week

UTAMU innovations attracted attention at this year’s Science, Technology and Innovation exhibition (STI) organized by Parliament of Uganda from 10th - 14th December at Parliament grounds in Kampala. The team that represented the University exhibited three innovations: Hybrid Irrigation System (Intelligator),

Larvae Incubation Can and Kafuna Savings & Credit Management Application. The exhibitors included Nuwagaba Collins, Kamya Simon, Deus Agaba and Collins Mugabi. It was purposed to identify innovators and recommend them for funding by government, so that Uganda can match the pace

of developed nations where innovation, science and technology are the primary pillars of economic growth and development.

Uganda Technology and Management University has been chosen to host a UNITWIN/UNESCO Cooperation Programme on Literacies, Green Skilling & Capacity Development for Sustainable Communities. The International Conference on Literacy and Skills Development always brings together stakeholders and decision-makers from all over the world to examine how integrated approaches to literacy and skills development can help close the literacy gap and improve learners’ ability to meet the needs of today’s increasingly globalized and digitized employment market.

UTAMU to host a UNESCO Chair on Literacies, Green Skilling & Capacity Development for Sustainable Communities

On 29th October, three (3) PhD students under the MUST –UTAMU collaborative PhD Programme successfully completed their doctoral studies and were awarded Doctoral Degrees. Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) and Uganda Technology and Management University (UTAMU) developed a joint institutional capacity building programme focusing on PhD training by research, to respond to the need for PhD holders. Since the development of

the collaboration in 2013, twelve students have graduated. The joint PhD programme covers areas of science, computing, economics, business administration, management, public administration and development studies.
