MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

I welcome you to this year’s Annual Journal Dinner, at which time we pause to reflect upon the centrality of the shul in our lives and to express our appreciation to those individuals who have distinguished themselves through their dedication and devotion to shul and community.

This year’s Dinner is very special as our “guest of honor” is an individual who means so much to all of us – Mr. Leo Bikk, who is one of the unsung heroes of our shul and community. Although very humble and unassuming, he is an incredibly giving and unselfish person. He is involved in every aspect and detail of the running of the shul, while concurrently concerned with the well-being of a plethora of people who are in need of assistance. His acts of chesed are legendary, and he continues to serve as an inspiration to us all.

In addition, we pay tribute tonight to the Ladies’ Auxiliary, the backbone of our shul, who continue to remain active in their fund-raising projects and who provide leadership and encouragement through their dedication to and support of our shul.

A special tribute is also being given to Mrs. Charlotte Frohlinger for her many dedicated years of service to the Ladies’ Auxiliary and the synagogue. A Woman of Valor who loves and greatly values our shul, Mrs. Frohlinger, through her personal life example, continues to inspire her many friends who admire her and care for her so much.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

It is my pleasure to welcome you to our 76th Annual Journal Dinner. This year we are fortunate to be honoring several individuals who work tirelessly for our Shul and community.

Our guest of honor is well known to all of us. Leo Bikk is involved in every aspect of our Shul. He is a gabbai, baal kriya- both during the week and Shabbos, and sets up Shalos Seudot every Shabbos afternoon. What’s remarkable is that he does it gently without fanfare, and always with a smile. I have never seen Leo get excited or angry…. with the exception of when the davening does not start on time. Everyone in our community has benefited from his chesed. He drives people to weddings, to a bris, doctors offices, he even picks up individuals and brings them to and from Shul for davening. His concern is so great that on Shabbos he has accompanied people to and from their homes so they arrive safely. He can truly be called “Mr. Kew Gardens”. We are fortunate to have him as part of our Kehila.

Charlotte Frohlinger, in her quiet manner, has been a tremendous asset to our Kehila. As part of our Ladies Auxiliary, she contributes more than her fair share in many areas of our operations and gives a great deal of her time to the functions of the Shul. Whether it’s the bizarre Bazaar, in the office or any other function, Charlotte is always there, with a smile and a kind word.

Since the inception of our Shul, the Ladies Auxiliary has been involved in every facet of our Shul. The Ladies sponsor a number of functions throughout the year, not only as social events but as major fund raising opportunities. From capital improvements to monthly Kiddushim, to marking key events in the calendar year, our shul would not be as vital as it is without these Ladies at our side. We are extremely grateful to them all for all their hard work and dedication to our Shul. We wish to express particular Hakaras HaTov to the past presidents of the Ladies Auxiliary for their strong and constructive leadership for many years.

On behalf of our entire Kehila I would like to express our Hakoras Hatov to our Mara D’Asra, Rabbi Aryeh Sokoloff, Shlita, for his deep involvement in everyday life of the Kew Gardens Synagogue. He runs multiple shiurim for men and women, which are also made available online through our website. Rabbi Sokoloff stands with every member of KGS in their times of happiness or sorrow, for Rabbinic advice and spiritual guidance. Rabbi Sokoloff goes out of his way to attend to the needs of our entire community.

I would like to conclude by thanking our dear Dinner Chairman, Rabbi Shaye Schonbrun, who has been working diligently to make this dinner a success. A Yasher Koach to our office manager, Rachel Janashvili, who is the de-facto Journal Chairperson and the Journal Committee, Malka Schonbrun, Shavi Plawes, the Gabbaim of all the Minyanim and all the Ba’alei Tefillah. A very special thanks to my dear wife, Dora for all her tremendous dedication to our Shul and for serving as the Vice President to me during my term in office. I could not have done it without you.

May you all be blessed with many years of Nachas and continued success in all your endeavors.

MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI EMERITUS

When I first came to the Kew Gardens Synagogue in 1968, Leo Bikk was a young man who sat in the second row from the back of the shul, together with a group of other young men of his age. But he was already then in integral part of our kehilla. Over the years, Leo, in his very quiet and decent manner, has become indispensable to Adas Yeshurun. Day in and day out, Leo does things quietly and efficiently that make a difference to the quality of religious life of our community. In honoring Leo, the congregation, in effect, honors the best of what makes our community unique.

By honoring Charlottes Frohlinger, we reflect on the major role that the Ladies’ Auxiliary plays in the life of Adas Yeshurun. At the same time, we recognize the fact that the success of the Ladies’ Auxiliary does not reside solely in the quality of its presidents but in the quiet, dedicated work of its members. Charlotte Frohlinger, without fuss and fanfare, reflects what Ladies’ Auxiliary is all about.

MESSAGE FROM THE DINNER CHAIRMAN

Dear Chaverim,

There’s the old story of a man who falls off a ship into the deep water. Soon after the call of “Man Overboard” is heard, another man is seen jumping over the side of the ship, swimming to the drowning man, and grabbing hold of him. Within a few more seconds a life boat reaches the two and brings them back to the ship. The rescuer is hailed as a hero and is asked how he had mustered up the courage to jump into the raging waters.

“I didn’t jump. Someone must have pushed me,” he replied.

I didn’t learn that I was to be the Dinner Chairman this year until I returned to Kew Gardens from Israel at the end of April. But I took on the responsibility of the position because of the honorees. I have known Leo Bikk almost forever, having played softball over half a century ago with him and other notables still residing in the neighborhood. I now see him every day, looking on in admiration as he sees to it that every facet of our shul is in its proper place and everything runs like clockwork. He is “Mr. Kew Gardens Synagogue.” But in addition to this major work, Leo performs a plethora of chesed for members of the entire Kew Gardens community. For all this, we all owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude and hakarat hatov.

And where would the Shul be without our “Women of Valor,” our members and leaders of the Ladies’ Auxiliary? Their work on behalf of the shul many times outshines the work of their male counterparts. For this there is the hakarat hatov of this Dinner.

Hopefully we will be treated to short but meaningful speeches this evening so that you will all be waiting with bated breath for next year’s Dinner.
