4 BSACI Programme 2020

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Welcome to the 2020 British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology Conference! This year we bring you a conference with a difference for a year that has been very different! We very much hope that you will enjoy the Annual Meeting through our online platform which has been purpose-build to facilitate interaction and discussion.

This year we’ll be highlighting allergy and airway management across the life course in our President’s plenary with speakers Professor Mika Makela from Finland, Dr Anna Murphy from Leicester and Professor Stephen Durham from London. Additionally, we shall be discussing some key topical issues of importance for the Society. Mr Jon Cruddas MP will speak about ‘Meeting the Challenge of the National Allergy Crisis’ and on Friday, we have a full session dedicated to ‘Overcoming Inequalities’ with some inspiring speakers, discussing how to bring about change. We’ve also teamed up with ITN to produce a video exploring report on anaphylaxis with a focus on the ‘Spare pens in schools’ initiative.

We focus on respiratory allergy with a plenary on optimising respiratory capacity for patients and another, discussing the impact of environmental allergens in asthma control. We have also dedicated a session to discussing ethics in allergy. Additionally, we have kept our panel questions after each speaker, re-designed our practical workshops to fit an online platform and joined with The British Society of Cutaneous allergy to prepare an exciting set of lectures on patch testing in atopics and oromucosal reactions.

Dr Glenis Scadding will be delivering this year’s Jack Pepys Lecture and Dr Michael Perkin will present The Harry Morrow Brown Lecture in our Celebrating Excellence session. We’ve had an array of amazing abstracts submitted this year and we’ll again be awarding our prestigious Barry Kay awards in each of our abstract categories. Do join us, to celebrate our abstract winners and the William Frankland Award recipient, at our Celebrating Excellence session at 16:00 on Thursday 1st October.

Our thanks to the BSACI Programme Planning Committee: Fiona Rayner (BSACI Chief Executive), Dr Tammy Rothenberg, Rachel Griffin, Lucy Common, Matt Doyle, Natasha Gunawardana, Hannah Kramer, Catherine Hyland (Clinical and Experimental Allergy Representative) and our dedicated conferencing partners at Medivents, Karen Anthony and Lucie Flint, who have gone above and beyond this year to transition our conference to a condensed online programme in a very short time frame.

Additionally, BSACI would like to thank Thermo Fisher Scientific for supporting our PR campaign on social media in the run up to the meeting. We would also like to thank Pauline Kent and Jerry Budden from Satellite PR who have be working with BSACI in developing and running our social media and PR Campaign.

We would also very much like to thank our sponsors and exhibitors for their continued support, in a changing conference landscape. Their contributions have been essential to ensuring that we have been able to deliver the conference in this new format this year. Please do visit the ‘stands’ in the exhibition area, which our team have done a great job of replicating for the online platform.

We hope you find this year’s meeting a rewarding experience, filled with ample opportunities to connect with colleagues and speakers alike.

Conference InformationAccessing the Digital PlatformYou will be provided with a link and a password before the event. If you have not received it, please check your junk or spam folder. If you need us to re-send it to you, please email [email protected].

Software RequirementsYou should not need any special software to access the digital event. The digital platform will be fully responsive allowing delegates to watch all sessions from laptop/desktops, iPads/tablets and mobile phones. However, for the optimal experience we recommend you use computers and Google Chrome as the preferred browser.

LanguageEnglish is the official language of the meeting.

Viewing Presentations LiveThe digital event can be accessed on a PC, laptop, or mobile device. Please ensure your sound is switched on. There will be live Q&A during all the sessions, and you will be able to submit questions and comments during the presentations – questions will be put to the speakers and panel during the Q&A period. Please make sure you include the name of the speaker who you want to address when submitting your questions. We have allowed plenty of time for Q&A in order to get through as many questions as possible so please don’t be shy! All questions that are read out will be anonymised if no name is provided.

Viewing Presentations on demand, after the conferenceAll talks will be available to watch on demand from one month after the conference closes. To access the talks, please use the same login as you have been provided for the live event. Of course, the live and interactive elements will not be available but this does at least afford you the opportunity to watch the presentations that you may have missed. In order to be eligible for your CPD points, you must watch the sessions within 4 weeks (so by the end of October).

Exhibition opening timesThe exhibition can be visited at any time during the conference. Some exhibitors have ‘meeting rooms’ open for you to chat to their team, and these will be staffed during the break times as follows:

Thursday 1st October 10:30 – 11:00; 12:30 – 14:00; 15:30 – 16:00

Friday 2nd October 10:30 – 11:00; 12:30 – 13:30

Annual meeting abstractsFollowing the meeting, the abstracts approved by the editor will be published in the Clinical and Experimental Allergy Journal.

Chair and speaker log-inIf you are a speaker or a chair, please ensure that you log in using the specific speaker login that you will be given, at least 30 minutes before the start of the session. You must use your specific login for the session you are

speaking/chairing, and not your general registration login. This is so that we can admit you into the session as a designated speaker with presentation rights, rather than a delegate with viewing only access. Please refer to your speaker brief for full information.

Poster presentations Posters will be displayed in the Poster Area, for the duration of the meeting. Select the poster you wish to view by clicking on its link. You will be able to view the poster and listen to a short presentation by the author. If you are giving an Oral Poster Presentation, you will be provided with a full briefing pack – please refer to this for guidance.

Speaker’s CornerThis year’s ‘Speaker’s Corner’ event is slightly different, and will be an interview with Mr Jon Cruddas, MP, by Professor Adam Fox. We hope you will join us for what promises to be an insightful interview.

Thursday 1st October 10:30 – 11:00

For more information please see the Programme.

Allergy WorkshopsOnce again we have a selection of six interactive workshops as part of this year’s programme.

Practical advice and demonstrations covering topics from skin prick testing to taking a drug allergy history, allergy-specific apps to support your practice and discussions on milk substitutes and asthma triggers.

Thursday 1st October 12:30 – 14:00

For more information please see the Programme.

Accreditation, Evaluation and Certificate of AttendanceThe British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology Digital Conference 2020, has been approved by the Royal College of Physicians for 16 CPD credits.
