Remembrance DayThis year, as towns and cities across Canada came together to observe Remembrance Day, our Community also commemorated the day with thoughtful events.

On Remembrance Day, V!VA Pickering participated in the Pickering City Hall Remembrance Day service. We contributed to the event by donating money to a charitable organization, and by purchasing a wreath that would be laid during the service.

In the afternoon we enjoyed a classical music performance by the family members of one of our own Community Members, John B.

Halloween Flash BackThis past Halloween, V!VA Pickering scared up plenty of fun starting with a pumpkin carving contest. Twelve frightfully festive pumpkins were carved by Community Members and Team Members. The winner for best carved pumpkin went out to Melany!

V!VA Pickering also welcomed over 90 kindergarden students from Glengrove Public School parading through our community to showcase their creative costumes while entertaining Community Members with a few songs.

The day ended with a costume party, lively musical entertainment and dancing.

Annual Christmas BazaarDuring this year’s bazaar, which featured 40 vendors, Community Members and guests enjoyed the opportunity to purchase a variety of seasonal items. From edible goods to knitted crafts, holiday treats were purchased for their loved ones. This year, six bazaar tables showcased unique items from V!VA Pickering. At our baked goods table, a variety of treats including cookies, tarts, and muffins wereamoung theother delicacies that showcased our Lifestyles Team’s talent. While baked goodies filled our stomachs, the V!VA Pickering craft table provided a feast for the eyes through its displays of warm clothing and holiday décor. Other stations included a horticulture table, a marketing table, and the White Elephant Table which featured items that were generously donated to V!VA Pickering’s Community Members.

The many offerings that were present during the event are a true showcase of the talented and giving character of the V!VA Pickering Retirement Community.

The Season To Give...As a result of contributions from Team Members, Community Members, and volunteers, this year’s bazaar generated $1,000 which will be contributed to local chairities Horizon House and Safe Hope Home located in Ajax. Thank you to everyone that participated and we look forward to next year’s bazaar!Commemorating together as a Community.

FUN FACTSABOUT THE NUTCRACKER

The Nutcracker was written in 1816 by German author E.T.A. Hoffman.

The original story title is The Nutcracker and the Mouse. It is a story of a young girl’s journey to a magical land on Christmas Eve.

In 1892, Russian composer Tchaikovsky and choreographers

turned the story into a ballet called The Nutcracker.

Tchaikovsky died less than a year after The Nutcracker’s premiere and although it was considered a failure by the public and critics, it soon became a huge international success!
