It gives me immense pleasure to initiate the SPIE activities
in the Indian Institute of Science. Since the past few years,
there has seen a rapid rise in the field of Optics and
Photonics and our research scholars are working on the
frontier areas like Fiber Bragg Gratings, Tomography,
Medical Imaging, Photonic band Gap Devices, Optical Bio-
sensors, Optical Sensor Technology, DWDM and Quantum
Computing.
The opening of a world-class Nanofabrication facility at
IISc has enabled carrying out complex experiments in the
field of nanophotonics. SPIE chapter helps in bringing
together different groups working in similar areas and
provides a platform for strong collaboration. I encourage
students to get involved actively in the seminars and
attend SPIE global conferences.
I express hope that the student chapter would reach great
heights in near future with more members and their active
participation. Our enthusiastic postgraduate students and
research students who possess exemplary
interdisciplinary zeal are also involved in various creative
R&D activities.
I extend my very best wishes to the student chapter of
SPIE at IISc in their future endeavours and pledge full
institutional support to the activities of the chapter.
Dr. Srinivas Talabattula
Associate Professor

President's WordPresident's Word
As we welcome 2011, I reflect back on the past year
when the SPIE-IISc student chapter laid its foundations at
Indian Institute of Science. It was my honor as well as
utmost pleasure to be a part of the launching team of
SPIE-IISc student chapter. The chapter was inaugurated in
August 2010 with a vision to bring together researchers
working in all different fields of Optics and Photonics
under a single common platform to explore opportunities
and share knowledge. The chapter has successfully put
forward its first step in a satisfying manner and has since
then regularly conducted educational and technical talks
by eminent speakers all across the country.
In this report an update of SPIE-IISc chapter activities
is presented, with a special recognition to all the SPIE
members and volunteers for their time and continuous
support. For the smooth running of the chapter, student
meetings and discussions are held every alternate Fridays
of the month. Under the active involvement of our Vice
President Mrs. Rajini V Honnungar and our secretary
Sandeep Ummethala such meetings have proved to be
very helpful to plan and schedule our future events. In
addition to this, our membership and outreach committee
headed by two active members Nivesh Mangal and Alok
Jha also plays a vital role in chapter’ s growth by making
students aware of SPIE activities. Recently a new program
called’ The Registration Drive’ was successfully
conducted to focus on expanding the membership base. A
finance and grant committee lead by our treasurer Arjun
Shetty has been established to oversee all financial
matters and to make the students aware of SPIE student
grant and travel grant benefits.
Amongst all, the most crucial and central role as a
mentor has been played by our Student Advisor Dr.
Srinivas Talabattula. With his constant motivation, zest
and vision the chapter has been able to achieve its set
goals despite of all the challenges. Also I would like to
express our sincere gratitude to Dirk, Ben Jason and all
the SPIE student program coordinators for their support
and inputs.
To all those mentioned above many thanks for your
efforts! I would like to wish all the best to the new SPIE-
IISc Chapter committee, and hope that our chapter
continues to be better and stronger every year.

A Technical Talk on “Computational challenges in diffuse
optical tomographic imaging”
The talk was delivered by Prof. Phaneendra K Yalavarthy of Super
Computer and Educational Research Centre (IISc). The talk
focussed on computational models, including the recent
developments at medical imaging group, SERC. The emphasis of
the talk has been on open problems and associate challenges in
computational aspects of diffuse optical tomography.
12th January 2011
Technical Talk on “Micromachined Implements for Optics”
Prof. G K Ananthasuresh of Mechanical Department was invited for
an enlightening lecture on Optics and micro systems and the
challenges involved in modelling were discussed.
24th February 2011
