Annual Meeting
Post-Graduate Course: March 14, 2018Renaissance Baltimore Harborplace, Baltimore, Maryland
Dysphagia Research Society
26th
MARCH 15 - 17 2018
Course Overview and Intended AudienceThis meeting is designed for a variety of clinicians, researchers, resident physicians, fellows and students from a wide range of disciplines including gastroenterology, neurology, otolaryngology, radiology, speech-language pathology, nutrition, biomedical engineering, dentistry, pediatrics, psychology and basic sciences, who take care of patients with swallowing disorders, including aspiration, and/or conduct research on patients with swallowing disorders.
Course FormatMost sessions are in the form of didactic lectures from panelists to disseminate information to the entire membership in a uniform manner. Each session is moderated by an expert that will be directing questions to the panel and integrating responses from the participants to stimulate in-depth discussion at the end of each section. Some session options are provided in smaller groups to provide for more interactive learning opportunities.
Educational ObjectivesFollowing the conference, the participant should be able to:Post-Graduate Course
• Explain reasoning and clinical decision making from a cognitive science perspective
• Identify the impact of reasoning and intuition on clinical assessment of swallowing
• Discuss the role of precision medicine in the future of dysphagia assessment and treatment
• Explain how genetics and epigenetics can inform decisions in head and neck cancer and neurologic treatments
Annual Meeting• Describe the role of an interdisciplinary team in the
management of patients with tracheostomies• Describe advances in the management of
pediatric swallowing• Discuss the impact of aerodigestive anomalies
on swallowing function • Identify the most common esophageal motility
disorders across the lifespan• Identify and discuss novel approaches to assessing
and treating swallowing function
CME Accreditation and Credit DesignationIn support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by Cine-Med and the Dysphagia Research Society. Cine-Med is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing
Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team. Ciné-Med designates this live activity for a maximum of 25 AMA PRA Category 1Credit(s)™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. This activity is approved for 25 contact hours for nurses.
The breakdown of CEUs is as follows: Post-Gradutate Course: This course is offered up to 0.7 ASHA CEUs (Advanced Level: Professional Area) Annual Meeting: This course is offered up to 2.1 ASHA CEUs (Advanced level; Professional Area). An annual ASHA CE Registry fee is required to register ASHA CEUs. The approved CEU count will be listed on the registration site and society website as it becomes available.CE Registry fees are paid by the participant directly to the ASHA National Office. The annual ASHA CE Registry fee allows registration of an unlimited number of ASHA CEUs for the calendar year. Visit www.asha.org/ce/CEUs/CERegistryfee/ for CE Registry fee subscription information.
Optional ActivitiesSession V: Success in Grant WritingThis session is part of the DRS New Investigator Initiative and is directed toward advancing the research careers of dysphagia scientists with emphasis on new and early stage investigators. This year’s content will focus on success in grant writing. Our session speakers are program officers and grant administrators from the National Institutes of Health, Veterans Affairs, and ASHA who will share tips and foundational information for grant writing success. These presentations will be followed by a mock grant review study section including highly accomplished researchers, grant reviewers, and academics, along with the program officers from the NIH and VA. Prior to the meeting, participants will have the opportunity to submit a grant which will then be reviewed during the mock study section. This session provides preferential admission to DRS members.
Welcome Reception Thursday, March 15, 2018 5:45 pm - 7:00 pmIncluded in attendee registrationGuest/Spouse registration $60
Resident and Trainee Luncheon Thursday, March 15, 2018 12:45pm to 1:45pmThe purpose is to provide students, residents & trainees the opportunity to meet, visit, and learn more about DRS. Registration $10 (limited seating available)
Meet the Mentors Breakfast: Friday, March 16, 2017 • 7:00 am – 8:00 am
The purpose of this breakfast is to provide an opportunity for new investigators to network and learn how to build or enhance his/her research career from senior researchers. This session provides preferential admission to DRS members and has limited seats available.
