In the early days of the Manor a few of the residents brought the remnant of a tree from a nearby pear orchard to be used as a symbol on which to exchange Christmas cards with their new friends. Over the years that early tree morphed into a golden tree of manzanita branches. A

partridge sits on top to guard the variety of cards hung for everyone to see. Bring your card to the “Lights On” party (Friday, Decem-ber 7) and find a special spot to hang it. A paper punch and pre-cut ties are provided. All our new resi-dents are urged to join with others in this festive tradition.

Aliceon Jones Increasing their art collection, traveling every year, and swimming at the Beach Club were the main things in our newcomer’s life when she and her husband moved from Menlo Park to Del Mesa in 1993. Now, with her dog, Champ, she has just arrived here at the Manor. Rex Jones, her husband who has passed away, was an art buff and so it was that she became one, too. Beautiful prints and other art works line her walls in 15A. She confesses that there still are many paintings under her bed, but with family coming to visit soon she will send them off with most of what she has hiding there. You can tell she is a dog lover, as next to her entrance door is a colorful, wonderful print of a dog. But, first: Aliceon McInroe Jones was born in Seattle but went to boarding school in Tacoma. “Where did you get that name? ” we asked. Aliceon laughed and said her mother made it up, but it’s easy, as it is pronounced like Allison. She went to the University of Washington for two years, then took a vacation to Berkeley and fell in love with the town and the UC campus. She finished her last two years at Berkeley, getting her BS in Business and later an emergency teacher’s credential from San Francisco State.

She met her husband at Industrial Indemnity Insurance Co., in San Francisco, and after their marriage they lived in Menlo Park. They never commuted to work together, she said, as “those who commute together don’t stay to-gether.” We asked her if she had read The Boys in the Boat. Of course! She wished her husband was alive to read that book, as he was the student manager of that Cal crew and knew all of the boys on the team; the famous team that lost to the University of Washington crew and with it Cal’s chance to go on to the Olympics. When there was an emergency for teachers, Aliceon be-came a teacher for the second grade at Hunter’s Point. She said that was a challenge, but she loved it. Now, here at the Manor, Champ, who is a blind rescue dog and is being groomed to be a therapy dog (Champ at Chomp?) is a very sad little fellow, as his best compan-ion, Boomer, who was a therapy dog at Chomp, just passed away. The three of them had been here just two weeks when Boomer died. So Champ is eating very little and is having a hard time adjusting to all that is new here, without his little companion. We hope that by the time this profile goes to print Champ will have rallied. In the meantime, Aliceon, with a good sense of humor, talks about her hobby of collecting paperweights. She said that when she and her husband traveled, they always brought back, not only a book (rather than pictures) about the cities they were in, but a paperweight, because those were easy to pack. She is sad to have had to give away all her books from around the world, as well as much of their art work. So there you have our new “family.” With her art work, paperweights, orchids, plants, azaleas, and her little Shih Tzu, we welcome Aliceon and Champ to Carmel Valley Manor!
