ANNUAL
REPORT2019
FOR THE YEAR ENDED JUNE 30, 2019

In 1992, The Dan Marino Foundation was created as a 501(c) 3 organization by Dan and Claire
Marino, when their second son Michael was diagnosed with autism. Today, 3.5 million Americans
meet the criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder, and 1 out of every 7 people in the US is diagnosed
with a developmental disability.
For 28 years, the Foundation has led innovation and change with the mission to “empower
individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities.” By focusing less on why someone
has autism, but more about who the person is and what are their hopes and dreams, we provide
them with pathways to independence.
Respecting and embracing the potential of the young people we work with, the Foundation
has raised more than $80 million to create and support unique and impactful initiatives. Among
these are the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Dan Marino Outpatient Center, the Marino Autism
Research Institute, Marino Adapted Aquatics, and Marino Campus post-secondary schools in
Broward and Miami-Dade Counties.
Working to reduce the over 80% unemployment rate for individuals with autism and other
developmental disabilities, the Foundation is at the forefront of creating award-winning
technologies including the Virtual Interactive Training Agent software (ViTA DMF), ViTA Online,
and ViTA Magic Leap. In the spring of 2020, Marino Virtual Learning will premiere offering
online courses focused on social competency, independent living, and gainful employment.
Pushing the frontiers of mixed reality with partners like Google and Magic Leap, The Dan Marino
Foundation continues to be a game changer for children, teens, and young adults with autism
and other disabilities.

M A R I N O C A M P U S , our school for young adults with autism and other disabilities, conferred
industry certifications to 65 graduates from our Broward and Miami-Dade program sites.
The employment rate of our M A R I N O C A M P U S alumni remained strong at 72%, which is four
times the national average for persons with disabilities.
T H E D A N M A R I N O F O U N D AT I O N continued its longstanding support of the Nicklaus Chil-
dren’s Hospital Dan Marino Outpatient Center, a leading provider of pediatric health services for
children with neurodevelopmental disorders, which attracts patients from all over the world. Funding
assisted in the total renovation of the Center’s Sensory Room and upgrades to the Aquatic Center.
Our Spring Break and Summer Youth Employment Programs taught valuable pre-employment and
self-advocacy skills to over 100 middle and high-school teens with disabilities.
2019 was another exciting year for our V I TA - D M F software, a virtual job interview training system.
With funding from Magic Leap and the Noorda Foundation, the software was upgraded to make the
experience more realistic and unscripted. In addition, an online version of V I TA - D M F is in develop-
ment. Through our partnership with Magic Leap, a mixed reality version of V I TA - D M F is being piloted.
V I TA - D M F was installed at seven Department of Juvenile Justice facilities. Data from 1000 interviews
conducted showed that participants demonstrated a 98% improvement in interview proficiency.
In 2019, work commenced on M A R I N O V I R T U A L L E A R N I N G which will offer online courses ac-
cessible to all including classes in employability and social skill training, self-advocacy, and access
to an online version of V I TA - D M F. These virtual programs are not the typical online delivery –
avatars and gamification are being incorporated to bring learning to a new and engaging level.
M A R I N O C A M P U S was awarded the 2019 Post-Secondary Program of the Year by the Unicorn
Children’s Foundation.
