SERMON Kathy Beach “Grace, Gratitude and Generosity”

WE RESPOND TO GOD’S WORD

+HYMN 275 “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God” EIN’ FESTE BURG

+AFFIRMATION OF FAITH adapted from the French Confession of 1559 We believe and confess only one God who can do all things, is all-wise, all-good, all just, and all-merciful. We believe that everything required for our salvation has been offered and communicated to us in Jesus Christ, the wisdom of God and God’s eternal Son. Jesus Christ clothed himself in our flesh: God and human in one person. We believe that we are illuminated in faith by the unfathomable grace of the Holy Spirit. God imparts this gracious gift. By faith we receive grace to live holy lives in awe and reverence for God, for we receive what the gospel promises when God gives us the Holy Spirit. Faith does not cool our desire for good and holy living, but rather engenders and excites it in us, leading naturally to good works. As for the true Church we believe that it ought to be governed in accordance with the order established by our Lord Jesus Christ. In this way, pure doctrine can be maintained, the poor and afflicted can be helped in their need, assemblies can be gathered in the name of God, and both great and small can be edified.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

OFFERING OFFERTORY ANTHEM

"My Eyes For Beauty Pine" - Herbert Howells My eyes for beauty pine, my soul for God's grace. No other care nor hope is mine, to heaven I turn my face. One splendor thence is shed from all the stars above: 'Tis named when God's name is said, 'tis Love 'tis heavenly Love. And every gentle heart that burns with true desire, is lit from eyes that mirror

part of that celestial fire. - Robert Bridges

+DOXOLOGY (606) OLD HUNDRETH Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

+PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING AND LORD’S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

TODAY’S SERVICE

25th Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan - Welcome to our twenty-fifth Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan Service. This ceremony had its beginning in this country during the early years of World War II, when Peter Marshall preached a number of sermons in support of the British War Relief and the Scottish Clans Evacuation Plan. The popularity of the service caught the interest of many Scots in this country and abroad, and soon the Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan began to be celebrated across the nation in witness to the rich heritage of Scottish Reformation. We are grateful to the many members and friends of this congregation who have provided the tartans used in today’s service. The pulpit and lectern paraments and stoles for the pastors are in the Clergy (ancient) tartan. These are in memory of Lucy Pearson Smith and Marlton Cremore Pearson, handmade and donated by their family. Special thanks to Muriel Pearson for her service this year and all years previous in coordinating The Kirkin’ Service.

Thank you to The Port City Pipes and Drums for helping lead music in our service today. The Port City Pipes and Drums was founded in 1993 by Pipe Major Andrew Simpson, a native Scot. They have participated in our Kirkin o’ the Tartan since its inception.

Today's Affirmation of Faith is based on a translation of the original text by Dr. Ellen Babinsky and Dr. Joseph D. Small. It comes from the earliest days of the French Protestant Church, and was greatly influenced by the father of our Reformed faith, John Calvin. Today is Reformation Sunday in the church calendar.

Steven Grant Windham, son of J.T. and Shanna Windham, will be baptized during the 11:00 a.m. worship service this morning. We rejoice with the family!

The flowers in the Chancel are in loving memory of John T. Talbert Jr. given by his family.

PASTOR ON CALL - 762-9622 REMINDER: Please be sure to silence all electronic devices

upon entering the sanctuary. This is greatly appreciated.

OUR LIFE TOGETHER

GENEROSITY MOMENT Robin Robinson

CALL TO WORSHIP Through all generations, God has been our dwelling place. Before the mountains were brought forth, Before the earth and the world were created, From everlasting to everlasting, God is. Let us worship God who was, who is, and who will be.

PROCESSION OF THE TARTANS “Scotland the Brave” - traditional “Highland Cathedral” - Korb/Roever

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Almighty and merciful God, we have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against your holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; and we have done those things which we ought not to have done. O Lord, have mercy upon us. Spare those who confess their faults. Restore those who are penitent, according to your promises declared to the world in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O merciful God, for his sake, that we may live a holy, just and humble life to the glory of your holy name. (From the 1637 Scottish Book of Common Prayer)

SILENT PRAYER

KYRIE Merbecke Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us.
