Welcome to worship this winter morning! As we gather to worship, let us remember that God wants us to “do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly” with him (Micah 6:8, NRSV). Introduction for the Day: This weekend commemorates the life and ministry of Martin Luther King Jr., who called his nation to a new vision of justice. The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity began this past week on Wednesday, January 16 and was first observed in January, 1908. Celebrated in the chapel of a small Atonement Franciscan Convent of the Protestant Episcopal Church, on a remote hillside fifty miles from New York City, this new prayer movement caught the imagination of others beyond the Franciscan Friars and Sisters of the Atonement to become an energetic movement that gradually blossomed into a worldwide observance involving many nations and millions of people. Please wear a Nametag today: The first and third Sundays when you wear a nametag, you give others the opportunity to know your name. In so doing, we can become better acquainted as a church family. Greet someone new today! Hunger Baskets to be passed today: During the offering, a basket will be passed following the offering plate. The second collection will be directed toward local and world hunger. St. Matthew’s has always had a faithful focus on alleviating hunger in our world, and dedicating this collection on the 1st and third Sundays of each month helps to carry out that commitment. Also much appreciated are food items for Reformation Lutheran Church’s Food Pantry, which can be placed in the collection area in the parking lot entrance. St. Matthew’s Annual Meeting of the Congregation will take place on Sunday, January 27 at 12:15 p.m. in the Sanctuary. This year the meeting includes a potluck lunch. The meeting will include a report on 2012 business, election of new council members, presentation and approval of the 2013 budget, and a presentation and vote to begin a comprehensive fund appeal for a building program in 2013. All are invited. The 2012 Annual Report is available for pick-up today at the Welcome Center and also across from the church office. Announcements for Sunday, January 20, 2013 St. Matthew’s Ev. Journeys Through Revelation: Apocalyptic Hope for TodayWednesday Evenings 7:00-8:30 PM on January 23, 30 and February 6thLed by Pastor MargaretThe book of Revelation is one of the most difficult books of the Bible filled with mys-terious symbolism. This study will help us to see the overall message of this book as a message of hope. Participants are encouraged to read the entire book out loud before coming. Revelation promises a blessing to the person “who reads aloud the words,” as well as to “those who hear” (Rev 1:3). You may also want to read Revelation 21-22 first. The promise of the renewed earth - “the Tree of Life, the river of life and the city of God” - will help to sustain you throughout the long journey of this book.

Prayers for PeaceIn the wake of the terrible tragedy that happened in Sandy Hook, it is hard to know how to respond – and the ultimate answer is complex. But as we celebrate the birth of the Prince of Peace, we can lift our prayers for peace – peace in the world, peace in our communities, and peace for troubled souls. As a visual reminder of our prayers, the tree next to our sign on the corner of Wauwatosa and Milwaukee Avenues is hung with peace doves, 1 for each of those who died in last month’s massacre. The tree is wrapped in gold to represent the lifting up of prayers for the souls and families of those who died as well as for peace in our world. May peace come to all of us. Thanks to Chuck Shantz for making the doves.

Second Timothy tells us that “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that all God may be competent, equipped for every good work.”

That is a remarkable phrase: “every good work!” Everything good that God expects us to do, the Scriptures equip us to do. That is an amazing claim. How does it work? How does the Bible equip us for “every good work”?

It’s not by supplying specific lists that cover all possible situations. Thinking that way would be a mistake. The Bible does not equip us for every good deed by telling us the specific choice to make for every new situation. Good works are done from a heart that treasures God and his help and from a heart that loves to display the glory of Christ.

So here’s my answer to how the Scripture equips us for “every good work.” The Scripture, day after day, reveals to us the greatness and the beauty and the power and the wisdom and the mercy of all that God is for us in Christ so that by the power of the Spirit we find our joy in God, and the ways of sin become distasteful.

Yes, the Bible gives us many specifics as pointers how to live, but most deeply the way the Bible equips us for every good work is by changing what we find satisfaction in so that our goodness comes from within - freely - not by coercion from without. The Bible does this when we read it and meditate on and over it every day.

How does the Bible

Equip us for

“Every good work”?
