Reflection:

When Jesus reminds us to "remain in me," he wants us to "stay in touch" with him. But we know that we don’t have to move away to lose touch. We might continue going to church regularly, but lose touch with Christ when we just go through the motions of religion, without our heart and mind being fully in it. In fact, we are not "remaining" in him; his words don’t nourish and direct us.

So we ask ourselves:

● Has my religious practice become formalistic and merely habit? ● What first step should I make to get “back in touch” with Jesus and a living Faith?

Dear Parishioner,

This is a very exciting weekend in Immaculate Heart of Mary. We are

welcoming 33 children to the Table of the Lord for the first time as they receive First Holy Communion. It is my sincere prayer that they continue to be nourished at the Table of the Lord each week. Pray for them and their families that they continue to find hope and strength in the Lord Jesus as they journey through life. May they always be at home in Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Last week’s Y oung Heartists Concert was a wonderful experience with young people from our parish who shared their talent with us. Thanks to Steven Vaughan who coordinated the event and invited the children to participate. In addition to musical talent we were privileged to have the artwork of the children from Saint Joseph the Worker Catholic Academy. The Cross which contains individual crosses created by each student stands near our baptism font and will remain throughout the weekend. Please take time to see and appreciate the children’s work. The Cross will be visiting the various parishes that are aligned with Saint Joseph the Worker Catholic Academy.

Thank you to all who listened so attentively to the Annual Catholic Appeal video last weekend during the masses. I am so appreciative of your patience and consideration in this effort. Once again there is an insert on page 5 of this bulletin to share more information about the Annual Catholic Appeal. Again, please know that whatever gift you might be able to afford will make a difference in the effort to support ministries throughout the diocese as well as needs within our own parish.

Finally, our Spring Extravaganza is just days away. The prizes are amazing! The committee has been working diligently for weeks and the final days of wrapping are coming to a close. So, have you purchased your ticket? Don’t be left out of this exciting event. Some people start calling to inquire about tickets as far back as January because apparently we have a reputation of fine gifts. If you need a ticket please call the rectory by Monday.

Did You Know?

Since 2009, on average approximately 28% of parishioners who receive weekly envelopes participated in the Annual Catholic Appeal. Through their generosity over the years we have been able to meet our goal. Some years we reached over goal by $13,000.00. Last year it was over by $3,000.00. Imagine what we could accomplish if we had close to 100% participation. Every gift counts and no gift is too small. All monies received over goal will be used to continue the restoration of the Church ceiling and clean the Church walls.

*2018 Annual Catholic Appeal Payments are scheduled April through December.

We Come to Your Feast

After the Liturgy of the Word, the focus of the Mass shifts from the ambo to the altar; which is about to be prepared. And just as we would at a meal in the home of any other

friend, we do the same three rituals; we 1) set the table, 2) say grace and 3) share the food. At Mass, these actions are called 1) the Preparation of the Gifts, 2) the Eucharistic Prayer and 3) the Communion Rite. Michael Joncas’ song explains this visual indication that a new part of the Mass is about to begin…

We place upon your table a gleaming cloth of white: the weaving of our stories, the fabric of our lives…

Don’t you usually use a tablecloth when eating a formal or celebratory meal with company?

We place upon your table a humble loaf of bread: the gift of field and hillside, the grain by which we’re fed…

We place upon your table a simple cup of wine: the fruit of human labor, the gift of sun and vine...

Early Christians each brought bread and wine from their homes to be used for Mass and to be given to the poor. Today, similar offerings are made with our monetary contributions and our presentation of the bread and wine to be used for the sacrifice. And now that the table is set, Father mixes water with the wine and washes his hands to remind us of the Last Supper; since these are things all Jews did at meals in Jesus’ day. Then he invites us to participate in saying grace for the meal we are about to receive with each other...

We gather ‘round your table, we pause within our quest, we stand beside our neighbors, we name the stranger “guest” The feast is spread before us…

…with the fruit of our lands and the work of our hands, we come to your feast!

Anniversary Year Works of Charity

Trinity Rescue & Bensonhurst Cluster Outreach Program is committed to clothing and feeding the homeless throughout the city. This is possible through hard work and donations from volunteers from more than 20 parishes in Brooklyn. They are located in St. Dominic's Church (2001 Bay Ridge Parkway).

Thank you to all who have donated time, supplies, money, and food items to support their mission. Hot and delicious food, along with baked goods were prepared and distributed for the Midnight Run on 4/03. The first sandwich making event was a huge success. Sandwiches and baked goods were prepared and delivered for the Midnight Run on 4/18. The 125th Jubilee Year Journal

While previous Dinner Dance Journals have been produced ‘in house,’ this special Journal will be published by a professional printer. The 125th

Anniversary Journal will include a condensed history of our first 100 years with special attention to the last

25 years along with hopes and dreams of what might be in the years ahead. Of course, this requires solid deadlines. Therefore, we are

asking all to consider contributing to the Journal through Dedications, Memorials and/or Honors for family and friends. You might even consider

acknowledging clergy, religious and laity that have served the parish and school who may have

touched your life in a special way.

The Deadline for all dedications is June 20th. Please return all requests to the Rectory Office.

Baptism of Infants (Children age 7 years and younger)

Baptism Preparation Classes for families planning to have their child baptized at Immaculate Heart of Mary will take place the first Wednesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. in the Marian Center. Parents must attend; sponsors are also encouraged to join us for the

class. Families must be registered for the class prior to attending by contacting the Rectory. We will celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism on May 6th and June 10th. You must be pre-registered and attend the Baptism Preparation Class held first Wednesday of the month.

Baptism of Children (Children who have celebrated their

8th Birthday and older.) Children who have celebrated their 8th birthday must participate in a process - The Rite of Christian Initiation (R.C.I.A.) adapted for Children. This process takes place over three to five years and includes your child attending Faith Formation Classes and Mass regularly. This is a faith journey for both you and your child. When there is an appropriate readiness, your child is baptized, confirmed and receives Eucharist at the Easter Vigil. Your child continues regular instruction in the Faith Formation Program for several years after their initiation. For more information contact S. Mary Ann.

Only Parents or Legal Guardians may register a child

for Baptism. No date is definite until you have completed all registration forms at the Rectory.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

The R.C.I.A. is designed for adults who have never been baptized, perhaps been baptized in another faith, or baptized Catholic but never received Eucharist and Confirmation. This is an opportunity to explore life in the Catholic Community, have a companion on your faith journey, prepare for the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, and/or Eucharist, and Confirmation).

Proximate Preparation Penance, Eucharist and Confirmation

All families registered in our parish who anticipate their children will receive Penance & First Eucharist (Communion) in the spring

of 2017 or Confirmation in the fall of 2017 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church must attend our Proximate Preparation Program. This would include children of our parish currently registered in Saint Joseph the Worker Catholic Academy, other Catholic or Private Schools and/or our Children’s Faith Formation Program.

Children who worship in other parishes who will be attending Saint Joseph the Worker Catholic Academy and wish to receive the Sacraments of Initiation at Immaculate Heart of Mary will need a letter from their pastor granting them permission to receive the Sacraments of Initiation at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.

In addition, children of our parish who attend other private or Catholic Schools are encouraged to ‘come home’ to receive the Sacraments of Initiation at Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Proximate Preparation is for parents and children to attend together.

As always, it is the expectation that all are attending mass regularly. Remember these are the Sacraments of Initiation, initiation into the worshipping community. For further information or clarification, please contact S. Mary Ann. To assist us in planning, please call to register if you are not attending our Children’s Faith Formation Program.

Candidates for Confirmation in the fall of 2018 will meet on Saturday, May 19 at 3:30 p.m. in the

Marian Center. Candidates in Catholic Academies, High Schools or other Faith Formation Programs

must pre-register for Proximate Preparation by calling the Rectory.
