Annotations of 2 Egyptian Sculptures

This sculpture is the Great Sphinx of Giza. It was made in Egypt by the Ancient Egyptian emperor, Khafre.

The sculpture is 73.5 metres (241 ft) long, 6 metres (20 ft) wide, and 20.22 m (66.34 ft) tall making it the largest monolith statue in the world.

The Great Sphinx of Giza is a sculpture which has the body of a lioness and the head of a man and was said to represent power and wisdom.

This sculpture is of the mask of the Ancient Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun. Because he was a pharaoh he was able to have a golden mask made for him when he died.

Tutankhamun was crowned emperor at the age of 9 and ruled for 10 years, dying at the age of just under 19 years old. It is still undecided as to how he died exactly. Some researchers have proposed that he died from a blow to the back of the head and some believe it was due to a broken leg though the most likely explanation seems to be because he was born as a product of incest, which caused his bones to become brittle and his skull to become elongated which could have been easily shattered.

The gold on his mask shows that he is from royalty and the Royal Cobra on his mask represents the protector goddess, Wadjet.

Tutankhamun’s mask sported a beard because all pharaohs (even female pharaohs like Nefertiti and Cleopatra) were required to wear beards.
