Il barbiere di Siviglia, o “El barbero de Sevilla” es considerada como una de las mejores óperas cómicas jamás compuestas, y la ingeniosa producción de Dennis Garnhum ubica la acción en un set de rodaje en Sevilla, en una bodega donde almacenan todos los disfraces y la utilería para las películas. El año es 1940. La estrella de cine española, Rosina, ha sido encerrada por Bartolo, su agente y dueño del estudio, quien está interesado en su fortuna. El Conde Almaviva, un noble que ha estado enamorado de ella tanto dentro como fuera de la pantalla, la sigue hasta el estudio. Añadan a esto un talentoso barbero contratado para el rodaje del día y a un coro de extras, y estarán preparados para algunas locuras tras bambalinas, alimentadas por el amor y la pasión.

Disfruten el encantador desenlace de la ópera cómica en su máxima expresión, brillantemente enmarcado en la merecidamente famosa música de Rossini.

Il barbiere di Siviglia, or “The Barber of Seville,” is considered one of the greatest comic operas ever composed. dennis Garnhum’s clever production sets the action on a movie backlot in Seville in a large warehouse that contains all the props and costumes of a movie studio. The year is 1940. Spanish movie star, Rosina, is kept captive by Bartolo, her agent and owner of the studio, who is out for her cash. Count Almaviva, a nobleman, has been in love with her onscreen and off and now follows her to the studio. Add to this mix a talented barber hired for the day’s shooting, throw in a chorus of movie extras, and you’re in for some backstage antics fueled by love and passion.

Enjoy the delicious unfolding of comic opera at its best, brilliantly encased in Rossini’s deservedly famous music.

But when Norma discovers that her beloved now loves another, an impassioned new battle begins as betrayal, torment, and ferocity take the reins. Una aventura romántica clandestina une a dos enemigos extremos en tiempos de guerra. Pero cuando Norma descubre que su amado ahora ama a otra, una nueva y apasionada batalla comienza mientras la traición, el tormento y la ferocidad toman el control. La inolvidable conclusión conlleva una noble confesión pública y el sacrificio personal extremo.

El notablemente exigente papel principal, es un reto emocionante, y la ópera alcanza sus más impresionantes alturas líricas en la famosa aria “Casta diva”. Mieczysław Weinberg was a Warsaw-born Polish Jew who lost his parents and a sister to the Holocaust. He wrote this first of his seven operas in Moscow, to which he escaped (on foot) in 1939 at the eruption of World War II. He died in 1996 without having seen his opera performed. Much of his music was suppressed by the Soviet authorities during his lifetime but resurfaced in performances and recordings.

The opera tells the story of liese (formerly a warden in Auschwitz), on an ocean liner with her husband, who is en route to a new diplomatic post in Brazil. She is stunned to see one of the other “passengers,” believing her to be a prisoner from Auschwitz. Her husband knows nothing of her past, and liese finds herself in a harrowing situation.

Florida Grand Opera will present the production that premiered at the Bregenz Festival in 2010. Its tiered design contrasts the luxury of the ocean liner with the despair of Auschwitz, while the middle is reserved for a male chorus that attempts to make sense of the unfolding horrors. This South Florida premiere will be one of the most important musical events of the year.

Myeczysław Weinberg fue un judío polaco nacido en Varsovia, quien perdió a sus padres y a su hermana en el holocausto. Escribió sus primeras siete óperas en Moscú, a donde escapó (caminando) en 1939 al estallar la segunda guerra mundial. Murió en 1996 sin haber visto ésta ópera en escena. Gran parte de su música fue censurada por las autoridades soviéticas durante su vida, pero reapareció posteriormente en conciertos y grabaciones.

La ópera narra la historia de Liese, (una ex guardia de la SS en Auschwitz) quien viaja en un trasatlántico con su esposo, quien va en camino a un nuevo puesto diplomático en Brasil. Ella se sorprende al ver a otro de los pasajeros, y cree que pudo haber sido prisionero en Auschwitz. Su esposo no sabe nada sobre su pasado, y Liese resulta envuelta en una situación aterradora.

Florida Grand Opera presentará la misma producción que fue estrenada en el Festival de Bregenz en 2010. Su diseño en dos niveles marca un claro contraste entre el lujo del trasatlántico con la desesperación de Auschwitz, mientras que en el medio se encuentra un coro masculino que trata de darle sentido a los horrores que se desencadenan. Este estreno en el Sur de la Florida promete ser uno de los eventos musicales más importantes del año.

With irresistible eccentric characters, fabulous music, and plenty of laughs, director Renaud doucet and designer André Barbe return with their colorful and quirky style. Set in Rome at the cusp of the Swinging Sixties, it’s the perfect setting for a colossal clash of the generations.

There’s no fool like an old fool, particularly when it comes to love and money. don Pasquale, a reclusive old man with a penchant for cats, runs his pensione with only a chain-smoking chambermaid, a greasy cook, and an ancient porter for company. Worried that his wealth will be squandered by his scheming nephew Ernesto, Pasquale determines to find himself a wife. When a distinctly feline young lady conveniently turns up, he is smitten. But having a wife is not quite as straightforward as he expected. Has Ernesto got the better of the old curmudgeon at last?

From melodic arias to punchy patter and sparkling humor, donizetti’s music brings this comedic masterpiece to life.

La encantadora ópera Don Pasquale de Donizetti es uno de los pilares de la ópera cómica italiana, y en la aclamada producción de la Scottish Opera que presentaremos, el público del Sur de la Florida tendrá una divertida oportunidad de vivirla desde un nuevo punto de vista. Con personajes irresistibles y excéntricos, música fabulosa y muchas carcajadas, el diseñador André Barbe y el director Renaud Doucet regresan con su estilo colorido y peculiar. Ambientada en Roma en el furor de los años 60, es el escenario perfecto para un choque colosal de generaciones.
