HEAVY ARTILLERY
Many trailside stories are told of rlie great
longhoni drives up from Texas to the rail-
heads at Abilene and Dodge City. One of
the best is the story of young Joe Murehison
and hi* heavy artillery.
Joe was a cowboy on one of the drives
and. right from the -beginning, he packed
two big six-guns with their belts full of
shells, a rifle, a holstered knife, and heavy-
iron spurs. In addition,he wore boots, cow-
hide chaps, and the rest of an all-weather
peeler's gear.
Most of the cowboys on those long, hot
drives pulled off gear like Indians in a
sweat bath. But not Joe. He wore his entire
rig at all times, like his skin — come heat,
cold, or wet.
When the herd hit the Cimarron River,
she was hank-full. Joe was unable to swim
a lick but he refused to take off any of his
heavy artillery. He just plunged his horse
in and headed across. About mid-stream,
the struggling horse sank with Joe.
The hoys milimbered their ropes to pull
Joe out, but Joe's head failed to pop up.
His horse came out alone. Then a hand
reached out to grab an overhanging willow
branch on the near bank. It was Joe: Not
even out of breath, he pulled himself out,
heavy rig and all.
"You know," he said, "I'd have drowned
for sure, if I hadn't had on all this heavy
gear . . . held me on the bottom so I could
walk out!" esmuaa us «* vssroa pwktok < litho co

KSUPBVISIN6 SHERIFF
The gray-haired banker gestured boastfully
at the busy employees oi the bank.
"You see, sherifl," the banker said, "you've
got to have things well organized, so that
other people do your work. Then you can
sit back and supervise the whole shebang!"
The two men had known each other lor
twenty years. John Martin had risen to beBank President, while Pete Gardner had
been elected sheriff.
Pete nodded approvingly, as he watched
a teller rapidly counting bills behind the
counter. The bank was quite busy. The cattle-
men had brought their herds to the stock-
yards early that morning, and the anxious
buyers for the Eastern packers had bough",
up everything for cash.
"Have to hand it to you, John," the sheriff
said. "You've sure goi things going real nice."
The banker smiled with satisfaction and
said, "Must have been close to fifty thousand
dollars deposited this morning!"
The sheriff whistled in surprise. "Hope
you have a nice, big safe!"
People were hurrying in and out of the
bank. Pete looked around and said, "Yes, sir!
It's a big day for Prairie City!"
As the sheriff left the bank and walkedback to his office, three men rode past him-
Strangers though Ihey were, there was still
something vaguely familiar about their faces.
. When the strangers reined in at the busy
bank, the sheriff started toward them. Then
he was reminded of John Martin's words.
Well, Pete thought, no reason why a sheriff
can't be efficient, too!
A few minutes later, as the sound oi gal-
loping horses faded in the distance, JohnMartin burst into the sheriff's office and cried,
"Pete! We've been held up!"
The sheriff leaned back calmly in his chair
and nodded his head.
John Mai tin was agitated. "Well, do some-
thing!" he demanded. "Form a posse!"
Pete grinned good-naturedly. "Why?"
The -banker was exasperated. "Why not?"
"No need to!" the sherifl replied.
"What kind of sheriff are you?"' John Mar-
tin cried angrily. "Three bandits ride into
town, hold up the bank at gun point, leavewith over fifty -thousand dollars, and you sit
thero! Are you in cahoots with them? Because
if you are, you'll .np>ver get away with it!"
"Now calm down," Pete said, as he leaned
forward. "There's nothing to worry about. I
saw those boys ride into town and I recog-
nised them horn .then pictures on the wall."
The sheriff pointed.
Martin's mouth hung open. 'Til be a mon-
key's uncle!".
"But," the sheriff said,- "I figured if I tried
to stop them, there might be some shooting.
With el] the people around the bank, some
innocent bystander mighi've been hurt. So
while they were stealing all your cash; I was
organizing a posse!"
"Then where's the posse?" the banker de-
manded."
"Waiting out near the creek," the sheriff
replied.
"How did you know they would go that
way?" John Martin asked.
"Figured they would ride downstream in
shallow water,- so they wouldn't leave a trail!"
The banker laughed suddenly "Now that's
what I call real efficient. I sure could use a
man like you at the bank!"
Suddenly, from outside of town, shots rang
out. Pete and John ran outside. A few min-
utes later, the bank robbers, followed closelyby the sheriff's posse, came riding back into
town, their hands tied behind their backs.
"Yes, sir!" the sheriff exclaimed. "There's
nothing like sitting back and supervising!"
