Annexure-I NSS UNIT LADY KEANE COLLEGE Motto: ‘Not me but you’ ANNUALREPORT, 2017-2018 The NSS Unit of Lady Keane College has participated and organised various activities during April, 2017 March, 2018. 1. The Unit consist of the following members: A. Volunteers - 450 volunteers B.Programme Officers: i. Prof.H.Mawroh ii. Prof.D.G.Marbaniang iii. Prof.N.Swer C. College members: i. Prof.A.Nongsteng ii. The various activities carried out this year include Interactive Awareness Programme to celebrate the World Environment Day, Blood Donation Camp, Goodwill visit to the newly adopted Village, Subakalai-Laitsohpliah, March for Road Safety Awareness, Special Cleaning Drive as part of the observance of SwachhtaPakhwara, Special Camp, Asset creation and various other activities that the Unit was actively involved in. The Unit has also one adopted Village Laitsohpliah-Subakalai Village, Khatarshnong-Laitkroh C&RD Block Laitkroh, which is about 35kms from the college. The Headman of the village is Mr. Shining Nongrum. The unit had carry out various Educational and Health programmes and also creation of important asset for the benefit of the village especially during the Special Camps. The details of the activities carried out during the academic year 2017-2018 are as follows: a. World Environment Day Celebration, 2017: The NSS unit of the college in collaboration with Mott Mac Donald, Shillong organised an Interactive Awareness Programme on Wastes Segregation and Disposal to celebrate the World Environment Day, 2017 and also to initiate the project on Solid and Liquid WastesManagement in the College Campuswhich was proposed by the unit and sponsored by the college.During the celebration of the World Environment Day, the student participants were divided into different groups with the task to carry out a cleaning drive of the college campus and at the same time to implement the scientific wastes segregation and disposal as per the instruction and training received during the interactive sessions with the resource person. The student volunteers had already prepared paper bins with different colour (Red, Blue, Green and Yellow) and these bins were used during the cleaning exercise. All the student participated actively and were able to segregate and dispose scientifically the different types of wastes. The programme was a success.

The NSS Unit of Lady Keane College has participated and organised various activities during April, 2017 –

March, 2018.

2. The various activities carried out this year include Interactive Awareness Programme to celebrate the World

A poster competition on the theme Wastes Segregation and Disposal was held for the NSS volunteers

and Ms. Vasundhara L. (B.Sc 5th Semester) was adjudge the winner and a cash prize of Rs.500/- was to awarded

to her. Her poster design was chosen to be displayed in the college campus as a Billboard for creating the

necessary awareness on wastes segregationand disposal.

Number of participants: 3 Programme Officers, 4 teachers and 120 volunteers

b. Voluntary Blood Donation Camp, 2017: On the 4th July, 2017, the NSS Unit in collaboration with the Red Ribbon

Club, Rangers Unit, Youth Red Cross, Medical Care Unit of the College and NEIGRIHMS, Shillong organised a

Voluntary Blood Donation Camp in the College Campus. About 70 Students and Staffs of the College

volunteered to donated Blood and 38 were found to be fit for donation. The camp was asuccess with the student

volunteers actively involved.

c. Goodwill visit to the newly adopted Village, Subakalai-Laitsohpliah: A goodwill visit to the newly adopted

village, Laitsohpliah-Subakalai, was undertaken on 8th. July, 2017. Around 100 students volunteers participated in

this visit where the volunteers got the chance to familiarise themselves with the village in which they are going to

work to bring about the all round development of the place. A socio-economic survey of the village was planned to

be conducted, but since the Village Headman was not well, the survey could not be conducted. However, the visit

was a success as it has generated a lot of enthusiasm among the volunteers who showed the eagerness to start the

developmental activities of the village.

Number of participants: 3 Programme Officers, 4 teachers and 70 volunteers

d. Follow-up Training on Digitalisation Financial Literacy Campaign- Cashless Transaction: On 5th. August,

2017, a follow-up Training Programme on Cashless Transaction was conducted for the Volunteers of the Unit with an aim

to motivate them to start the work of adopting households to train regarding cashless transaction. In this training 68

volunteers attended and all of them agreed to carry out the work of creating the necessary awareness.

Number of participants: 3 Programme Officers, 4 teachers and 68 volunteers

e. Emergent meeting with the Executive members of the Village Dorbar of Laitsohpliah-Subakalai: On the 7th.

August, 2017, the unit held an emergent meeting with the executive members of the adopted village in the village

community hall at 9:30am. In the meeting, the Programme officer of the unit, appraise the village executive members

about the aims and objectives of the Unit. In the meeting the village executive members expressed their eagerness for

the unit to start the developmental work in the village. They also informed about the most pressing needs of the

village with a request for the unit to help them meet their needs. The unit assured them that it is going to try its level

best to help them in whatever way possible. The meeting was ended with a vote of thanks from each side.

f. March for Road Safety Awareness :With an aim to make the Roads in Shillong safer for all its commuters, the NSS

Unit of the College organised a “March for Road Safety Awareness” from the College campus through Civil

Hospital Point, IGP, Barik and back to the College on 14th.August, 2017 from 11:30 am onwards More than 150

Volunteers took part in this march. The Volunteers also prepared road safety slogans to create the necessary

awareness. The Unit also prepared Stickers on road safety which were paste in the vehicles plying the roads during

the march. The programme was a great success.

g. Special Cleaning Drive: As part of the observance of Swachhta Pakhwara, the NSS Unit of the College in

collaboration with NSS Cell, NEHU, Shillong organised a Special Cleaning Drive of Police Bazaar and its adjoining

areas on 15th. August, 2017 from 9:00 am onwards. During the programme, more than 100 student volunteers of the

College Unit participated actively and also about 40-50 NSS volunteers and NSS Cadets from Umshyrpi College

took part in the special cleaning drive. Through their enthusiastic volunteering work, the Unit could clean all the

lanes leading to and from Police Bazaar point.

h. Essay competition: An Essay competition for the NSS Volunteers on the theme “What can I do for a Clean

India?” was organised on 5th. September, 2017. 34 Volunteers took part in this competition. The prize winners are

as follows:

a. First Prize: Ms. Sanchari Ray Chaudhury (B.A 1st Semester)

b. Second Prize: Ms. PhibadondorBuhphang (B.A 5th Semester)

c. Ms. BatesiKhongsti (B.Sc 5th Semester)

i. Training Programme: A skill development training programme on the theme “Construction Works” was

organised for the NSS Volunteers on 16th. September, 2017 to equipped the volunteers with the knowledge and

expertise in connection with the theme. This training is important since the Unit will be carrying out different

Asset Creation activities in the adopted village, Laitsohpliah-Subakalai and the student volunteers will be playing

a major role in these asset creation programmes. The resource persons for this training is Mr. C. Marbaniang,

Government Registered Architect and Mr. A. Dohling, Technical Assistant.

Number of participants: 3 Programme Officers, 4 teachers and 50 volunteers

j. The Unit was able to send 14 volunteers to render their service in two Women Model Polling Stations (At lady

Keane College, Shillong and at All Saint’s Diocese H. S. School) in connection with the Meghalaya Legislative

Assembly Elections held on 23rd. March, 2018.

k. Orientation Programme cum HIV/AIDS Awareness Programme:

On 29th. March, 2018, the unit organised an Orientation Programme for all its NSS Volunteers to orient

them to what NSS is? and what NSS is all about? The Resource Person for the programme was Prof. Gideon

Kharkongor, Department of Geography, St. Edmund’s College, Shillong.

Also, on the same day, the unit organised an HIV/AIDS Awareness programme where resource person

form Meghalaya Aids Control Society, Shillong came to create the necessary awareness on the topic. The

programme was a success which was evident from the attention and participation of the volunteers to discuss

matters related to the topic.

Number of participants: 3 Programme Officers, 4 teachers and 180 volunteers

l. Follow-up training on Mushroom Cultivation: During the Special Camp that the unit had organise on the

month of December, 2017, the villager after hearing and learning about what mushroom cultivation is about?

They expressed their desire to learn and know how to go about the cultivation of mushroom. So, the unit

organised a hands-on training on mushroom cultivation for the residents of the village at the College Premises on

31st. March, 2018 from 10:00am onwards. In this training the trainers were from Botany Department, Lady Keane

College, Shillong and they taught the participants how to cultivate mushroom. At the end of the training, each

participant was able to carry home one preparation of the mushroom mix so that they themselves can monitor the

growth and can collect the mushroom when the time is ripe. The participant expressed their gratitude for having

received the training and express that they are now confident to start up this mushroom cultivation in their village.

So, we can say that the training was a huge success. There were 20 village residents who participated in the

programme and 10 volunteers.

3. Special Camp:

a. 1st Special Camping: The unit had organised its first Special Camp in its newly adopted Village at

Laitsohpliah-Subakalai from 25th. To 31st October, 2017. The camp was a huge success whereby the

following activities were carried out:

a. Inaugural Programme on 26th. October, 2017

b. Socio-economic Survey from 26th. October, 2017 onwards

c. Awareness cum demonstration on Rain Water Harvesting technology on 27th. October, 2017

d. Health Camp on 28th. October, 2017

e. Social Work: Fencing of the ICDS Compound located in the Adopted Village on 30th.October, 2017

f. Asset Creation: Three (3) numbersAwareness cum information sign boards were constructed by the

student volunteersat the Tourist spots located LaitsohpliahVillage from 26th to 30th. October, 2017.

The boards were unveiled by the Sordar of the Village, Mr. S. Nongrum on 30th.October, 2017.

g. Student Activities: Every evening the student volunteers would conduct different informative and

educational activities for the children of the Village. This has really created a strong bond between the

Volunteers of the Unit and the inhabitants of the Village.

b. 2nd Special Camping: The unit also organised its second Special Camp in its newly adopted Village at

Laitsohpliah-Subakalai from 16th. To 22nd December, 2017. The camp was a huge success whereby the

following activities were carried out:

a. Golden Jubilee Celebration of the RCLP & RCUP School on the 18th and 19th. December, 2017

b. Interactive Discussion on Mushroom Cultivation on 20th. December, 2017

c. A special Talk on Soft Skills for Tourism on 21st. December, 2017

d. Fun with Mathematics, A special Programme for Kids on 16th and 18th. December, 2017

e. Student Activities: Every evening the student volunteers would conduct different informative and

educational activities for the children of the Village. This has really created a strong bond between the

Volunteers of the Unit and the inhabitants of the Village.

f. Trekking to a nearby Waterfall “Thwei U Ren” was carried out during the camp.

Number of participants: 3 Programme Officers, 4 teachers, 80 volunteers and 40 village residents.

4. Awards and Recognition:

a. Ms. Amrita Joshi Ghimre, an NSS Volunteer of the College was awarded the Best Volunteer Award for

the Year 2016-2017 by NSS Cell, NEHU, Shillong during the NSS Foundation Day Celebration at

NEHU, Shillong.

b. The NSS Unit of the College was awarded with a Certificate of Commendation for the Outstanding

Work that the Unit has been performing by NSS Cell, NEHU, Shillong during the NSS Foundation Day

Celebration at NEHU, Shillong.

5. Future Plans:

a. Career Counselling for the Higher Secondary Students. (May, 2018)

b. Celebration of the World Environment Day. (5th.June, 2018)

c. Youth Festival. (30th. June, 2018)

d. Blood Donation Camp. (6th.July, 2018)

e. NSS Student Enrolment Camp in the College Campus. (7th – 8th.August, 2018)

f. Cleaning Drive. (September, 2018)

g. Social Outreach Programmes (Orphanage, Old age Homes etc). (14th. November, 2018)

h. Awareness programmes on Diabetes, etc. (5th. December, 2018; International Volunteer’s Day)

i. Training programme on Soft Skills, Life Skills & Survival Skills. (Before the Special Camp October or

December, 2018)

j. Special Camping in the adopted Village, Laitsohpliah. (October or December, 2018)

k. Celebration of important days (Independence Day, National Integration Day, Human Rights Day, NSS

Day, etc).
