Annexe 2: A. Taxonomy Of Electronics Products

In general, electronics products are broadly classified into three categories, industrial electronics

products, consumer electronics products, and electronics parts & components. The consumer

electronics sub-sector is made up of electronics products for home use, with either utilitarian or

entertainment value. Some important products are TV, tape cassette recorder, VCR, microwave oven, etc. The industrial electronics category includes products such as computers and other

• office equipments, telecommunication products such as telephone set; radar, satellite communication equipment; etc, and also various industrial control equipment and medical

equipment. Although earlier studies used to group them all together, by virtue of the importance

each of these different segments have come to occupy individually, the industrial electronics

sub-sector has been further sub-divided as computers & other office equipmene,

telecommunication products, and (other) industrial electronics products. Products classified

under these sub-sectors are in general much more sophisticated and complex, and have to conform, in most cases, to strict quality standards required to ensure their proper functioning

which in turn ensures the efficiency of systems as a whole? The parts & components sub-sector

comprises of the constituent parts, which support the production of the first two category

products, for the assembly and manufacture of final products. Some examples are diodes,

transistors, integrated circuits (ICs), printed circuit boards (PCBs), opto-electronic devices,

resistors, capacitors, switches, etc.

In terms of the International Standard Industrial Classification (ISIC), electronics industry is that part of the electrical machinery industry under ISIC-383 (Manufacture of

electrical machinery, apparatus, appliances and supplies) which consists of electronics products

and electronics parts & components, along with products under code number ISIC-3825 and

ISIC-3850 covering mostly industrial electronics products. That is, the industry represents

products classified under code numbers:

ISIC-3825- Manufacture of office, computing and accounting machinery;

ISIC-3832- Manufacture of radio, TV, and communication equipment

and apparatus (electronic parts and components are included here); and,

ISIC-3850- Manufacture of professional and scientific, and measuring and controlling

equipment not elsewhere classified, and of photographic and optical goods.

It should be noted that while these sub-sub-sectors do have distinct functional characteristics

and are so categorized for convenience of analysis, they are not completely separate industries. Further, electronics firms have been found to be increasingly resorting to vertical and horizontal

integration strategies with a view to increasing their cost competitiveness and ensuring input supplies or 'system' synergies, which leads to overlapping in their product profiles in terms of

industrial categories. Thus, all firms do not produce only products falling under any one particular sub-sector alone. In fact, many firms produce electronic products in more than one of these sub-sectors. This being the case, the general practice is to categorize a firm into that particular sub-sector, the products of which combined has the highest percentage share in its total production.

The computer and parts segment is also referred to as electronic data processing (EDP) equipment. Prayoon and Waranya, 1987.
