Our country urgently needs businesses firmly connected to Agriculture. Due to dete- riorating climatic condi- tions and vagaries of the mother-nature, its' impera- tive for the farmer to look for some means of assured income Development of new Agro Economy is possible Highlighting the importance of bamboo planta- tion while addressing the International Sumitt of in Pune, Maharashtra, Honourable Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi said that in spite of the low water requirement for plantation, bamboo has potential to provide better yield per acre. Considering the above fact if farmers adopt bamboo cultivation in large scale, then it is possible to develop new dimension in agro economy. Bamboo cultivation will create a boost for environmental protection and will reduce deforestation. THOUGHTS OF OUR HONOURABLE PRIME MINISTER ON BAMBOO CULTIVATION 1. NURSERY: In order to produce bamboosa bamboo (katanga) saplings from seeds, the first nursery has been already set up in M.P. In the first phase, Artison has already achieved the target of creating 100 Millions healthy saplings as per its bamboo development programme. Thanks to nursery networking model, bamboo plants are available even in small towns and villages. 2. BAMBOO CULTIVATION: Awareness programme for the farmers has been devised to dissuade the farmers to carry out bamboo plantation on the demarcation land rather to encourage the farmers to carry out the same inside the farmland. 3. FARMER PRODUCER ORGANISATION (FPO): In order to secure the well-being of farmers, the formation of FPO's, similar to those as per the Amul model, has already been started 4. BAMBOO HARVEST: First phase of harvest and buying programme of green (pakiya katanga) bamboo culms from various farmers in Khandwa, Harda is already completed and the farmers were paid for their bamboo crop. 5. FACTORY ESTABLISHMENT: Bamboo processing units are being set up in M.P and Maharashtra to produce various type of bamboo base boards. M.P. government has already provided 174 acres of land to the company for Particle Board (PB) and MDF manufacturing unit. The expected capacity of the unit will be 650 m3 per day for PB and 500 m3 per day for MDF. On this site a Glue Board manufacturing Unit of 25 m3 capacity will start production in Dewas in first quarter of 2018. Capacity expansion will be introduced on various stages in a planned manner. 6. EXPORT OF BOARDS: IKEA, Walmart and a few other companies have already signed business documents for the first phase of business. Raw boards and articles made out of Glue Board, Particle Board and MDF will be supplied to them. ARTISON'S JOURNEY FROM THE BEGIN- NING TILL DATE MANUFACTURING VARIOUS TYPES OF BAMBOO- BASED BOARDS AND MAKING MODERN FURNITURE FROM THEM IS A BRAINCHILD OF MR DEBOPAM (DAVE) MUKHERJEE. AFTER more than 20 years of successful entrepreneurial career in the USA, Mr Debopam Mukherjee came to India with the passion to contribute to the economic and social wellbeing of his motherland. This is why he founded Artison Agrotech Pvt Ltd. Erstwhile in 1995 Mr Mukherjee established Astral systems info-corp. Under the visionary leadership of Mr Mukherjee, Astral group developed new technology for software industry. Formerly in 1989, Mr Mukherjee co-founded Angine Ltd, a hardware manufacturing company. Mr Mukherjee said that our country urgently needs business approaches firmly connected to Agriculture. Due to deteriorating climatic conditions and vagaries of the mother-nature, its' imperative for the farmer to look for some means of assured income and I have stepped in this direction only. All the essentials for the existence of human being - water, air and soil are regularly getting polluted by our own activities. Against this backdrop, Bamboo is the only plant that can prevent pollution and improve all these three elements rapidly. Bamboo not only assists in formation of scenario conducive to rainfall but also helps in protecting the rivers by reducing soil erosion. In comparison, Bamboo is more effective than other plants in reducing air pollution as it absorbs more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The relationship between bamboo and Ma Narmada, the lifeline of Madhya Pradesh, also dates back centuries as it is considered that the in Amarkantak, the origin of MAA NARMADA is from a hinterland full with bamboo. Mr Mukherjee says that Artison's business model is different in many aspects. So I feel proud of the fact that the inception of the idea takes shape on the soil of our own country. With the industrial activity on the back of my mind, I created the business structure in such a way that in the first phase by creating nurseries we can cover several thousand acers of plantation and this work is continuously going on. Thus we have created a sustainable source of raw material supply that can cater to the demand of the board manufacturing unit and ant the same time is a step towards restoring natural balance. We have created teams of energetic local youths in order to achieve our goal. Thus our work is creating employment at the rural level, keeping the elements of nature - earth, water and air purified and helping in developing economic stability for our farmers. NOW I AM NOT CONCERNED WITHSCARCITY OF WATER

I understood Artison's project indetails then in June 2016 put 1000bamboo plants on 30 acres land andthey are grown up now. In betweenrows of bamboo plant, I have taken acrop of wheat and I am satisfied withthe growth of the bamboo plants.Time to time, company representa-tives visits my field to witness the con-dition of the plants and shares techni-cal know-how and knowledge relevantto bamboo cultivation that makes theplantation much easier. All the10,000 plants put on my land arequite healthy, and today I am fullyconfident of a good yield from thebamboo crop.

Due to scarcity ofwater inMaharashtra, loss ofearning from farm-ing is a regularaffair. However, inspite of less water, farmer can get goodyield from bamboocrop. Because ofthis I not only putbamboo on 12 acresof my land but alsoencouraging farmersfrom my village orneighbouring vil-lages to join thismovement.

I cultivate on 40 acres of land. Shortage oflabour and water turned farming to a tougherjob these days. Various types of diseases andinclement weather has upped investment andreduced production. Uncertainty in price ofcrop made life difficult. I started Artison's bam-boo plantation during the summer of May2016. On 9 acres land I took out onion plantsone by one and replaced them with bamboosaplings and the crop didn't require extra water.Today the bamboo plants are about 15 feethigh and between the rows I have already har-vested crops of onion, toor, peanuts and subse-quently wheat and bengal gram. Drip systemprovides enough water to the bamboo plants. Iam confident that if I do not get enough water,my bamboo plants will be alright and I can takea new crop during the monsoon.

ARTISON AGROTECH AS

A TREND SETTER IN

MODERN DAY

AGRICULTURE

INDIA traditionally is an agro-basedcountry. However the irregularity of mon-soon, flood, drought, insect outbreaks andsimilar problems make the yield andearning from agriculture uncertain. Insuch circumstances bamboo plantationcould be a boon to the farming fraternityas it could help them evade all the prob-lems. Bamboo plantation is a great solu-tion, especially in such cases where thewater available for the plantation is limit-ed. The rapid growth feature of bambooalso makes it a very safe crop in terms offarming. With a constructive way forward in thisfield, Artison is encouraging farmers forbamboo plantation. Artison is a furnituremanufacturing company which will makevarious bamoo-based boards (ParticleBoard, MDF, OSB) and will export themabroad. Accordingly Artison requireshuge amount of Katanga bamboo as rawmaterial. To fulfill the raw material re-quirement, Artison is supplying healthybamboo saplings to the farmers and ask-ing them to engage in the plantation ini-tiative. Farmers are advised to follow theinter-cropping model of plantation bymaintaining 15 ft x 8 ft distance betweensaplings. Under a written legal agree-ment, Artison supplies saplings to thefarmers and promises to buy back suit-ably grown (pakiya) green bamboo culmsat the minimum support price of sugarcane every year since the completion offourth year of plantation.Bamboo can easily survive for 35-40 years, though this is a very conservative esti-mate. In one year several branches comeout from a bamboo plant. After comple-tion of 4 years of plantation, every year afarmer is expected to harvest about six ormore bamboo culms from each bushel. Therefore from a one-time plantation, afarmer is almost assured to earn 2-3 lacsper year per acer continuously for 30-35years. In this way, Artison is implement-ing changes to the traditional methods ofagriculture thus making significant con-tribution toward the socio-economic up-liftment of the farmers.

n BHOOMIKA kalam Bamboo plantation (in 12 acres) at Rameshchandra Muchhala’s Farm

Company making payment to farmer

in bamboo purchasing procedure.

Investment in traditional cultivation is

more and it requires more supervision

too. I learned about Artison's bamboo

cultivation techniques and today my

brother and I combined are cultivating

bamboo on 10 acres of land with very

little investment. Following inter-crop-

ping model, we have successfully yield-

ed Corn, Toor Daal, Cotton etc along-

with bamboo from the same farmland.

Jagdish Narmadashankar Patel,Bhagwanpura

My relatives and fellow villagers are

already engaged in bamboo planta-

tion. Sine a long time I was looking

for such a crop that takes little

supervision and gives better yield

with less expenditure on imple-

ments. Seeing all these qualities in

bamboo plantation, I was inspired

and put bamboo saplings on 4

acres of land. I am fully satisfied

with the bamboo crop and plan to

expand the plantation further.

Vivek Vasudev Chowdhury, Kharkala

I am a contractor by profession

and have done many develop-

ment works in my village.

Coming in contact with the rep-

resentatives of Artison Agrotech,

I see an improved technique of

agricultural development

through bamboo cultivation. To

assert my support for the

process, I have carried out bam-

boo plantation on 4 acres land.

BAMBOO BUYING

PROCESS

UNDER the bamboobuying procedure, thefarmers will harvest fouryear old green bambooculms and Artison willbuy them at theminimum support priceof sugar cane. The firstphase of bamboo buyingprocess has beensuccessfully completed.Recently the secondphase got started underwhich every year duringthe first two weeks ofJune, harvest collectionand buying of bamboowill take place. Fromeach bamboo bushel,Artison will harvestabout 4 to 6 green(Pakiya) bamboo culmsand pay the farmers onyield weight consideringminimum support price(MSP) of sugar caneannounced by the CentralGovernment. It is notablethat the company willbuy green bamboo culms

with higher moisturecontent so that thefarmers can benefit fromthe higher weight oftheir bamboo crop. MSPof sugar cane isincreased by a definiteamount every year. Therefore the farmerswith bamboo plantationcan be almost assured ofan increased price ofbamboo crop every yearnot only for the comingyears but also for the next40 odd years. In fact thebamboo crop works asinsurance for the farmersbecause it works as aconduit of guaranteedincome. By adopting thecompany's prescribedinter-cropping model, farmer can earnminimum 2 -3 lac Rs fromonly the bamboo crop, thus getting maximumbenefit by means ofanother crops plantedside by side.

BAMBOO is a speciesthat produces greenshoots every year.Farmers will be able toharvest four years orolder bamboo culm andsell it to the company. As a single plant growsa number of new greenshoots every year and aswe will be onlyharvesting four year oldbamboo culms, the one,two and three year oldgreen bamboos will bespared. New shoots willcome out again nextyear and the secondbatch which is four yearold will now face theaxe. The cycle will keepon continuing till thebamboo floors whichhappens only in 35 - 40year after which theplant dies. Now one cansow a different crop onthe land. For the first harvest, each bamboo bushel willgive about 6-8 greenbamboo culms. Thesegreen culms have about40-45% moisture. If thecompany buys bambooat Rs 2.30 per kg (thethen price of sugarcane) then at anestimated weight of 60 -80 kg per bamboo, onecan earn upto Rs 800-1100 annually. If onesows 350 bamboo plantson one acer at 15x8 feet, then he can earn 2-3 lacsper acer from the firstharvest. This earningwill ever increasebecause with maturitythe number ofharvestable bambooculms will only grow upand increase in rateevery year will make theprofit bigger.

Supervision andMaintenanceYou can do supervisionand maintenance in twoways described asfollowing:1.SOIL MOUNDING:This work can be doneevery year before itrains in June. This willhelp in better growth inthe shoots and this isgood too for thedevelopment of theplant.2.PRUNING ANDCLEANING: Thisprocess can be startedafter the secondmonsoon. Alternativelyit can be donedepending onrequirement anytimeafter the plants are overa year old and before thetime of first harvest. Inthis process unwantedshoots and twigs can becut from the bottom till10-12 feet. The processmakes cultivation

between the rows easierand helps in harvest too.The company willprovide you technicalguidance for both theprocesses; you only haveto arrange for thelabour.

Requirementof WaterDuring the months ofhigh summer (April,May and June) whenyou require water themost, then 2 liters ofwater per plant everyalternate day will befine. In case ofinsufficient water, please employ dripirrigation forplantation. If you havesufficient water, maintain moderatemoisture level duringsummer in order forbetter growth and betterculm weight.

WHAT SHOULD BE THE TYPE OF LAND?This is a bamboo cultivation initiative for business. Therefore it

would be better to do the plantation or fertile arable land. Theland should not have black rocks ie the soil appropriate for the

plantation must not have rocky under-layer till 4-5 feet. Bamboocultivated on fertile land demonstrates good weight and growth.

Best Time forPlantationIF you have satisfactory

arrangement for irrigation and

have plenty of water then you

can plant the saplings any

month. In case of insufficient

water, try to get the plantation

after the first monsoon shower.

In case of insufficient rain,

please maintain the moisture

level in the field by providing

water atleast two times so that

the growing plants can get

anchored to the soil.

Manure Type andQuantityFor good result we recommend thatthe farmer put 3 kg mature organicmanure per plant at the time ofplantation so that the plant candemonstrate fast growth rate.Between 2-4 months of plantation, make a shallow ditch at 6 inchesdistance all around the plant andadd 40-50 grams urea with profuseamount of water to aid fastergrowth. Absence of any drawbacksuch as fungus, termite, bacterialinfection etc on farmland soil willassist growth too. In case of abovedrawbacks, please get the soiltreated before planting the saplings.
